Ok so I was watching TAR podcast #4 again for the second time and despite Earl's antics were all so used to I did agree 100% with one thing.

How does Earl not get automatically invited to the wpa world nine ball??? It is legit an insult to not invite arguably the greatest 9 ball player to ever walk the planet (some may argue buddy or lassiter). After he won it that many times how does not get an auto invite? It just doesn't seem right at all.

All personal dislike for Earl aside anyone disagree that is isn't right?

Did he not get an invite? Alot of players got invites and chose not to go/could not make it due to the late invites leaving little time to prepare for the trip.

Earl has won the world 9-ball championships more then anyone in the modern era and is still shooting pretty good, him and Archer both "should" have been there.

Name players who are legends and in the hall of fame not being in an event like that when they are still shooting very well and at an age where they are still capable of winning is quite bad for this sport. Guys like that drive viewership and interest.

ya on the cast he was saying he just doesn't get invited anymore and feels like it's an insult because of how many times he has won it.

your right it is really bad for the game.

Why wouldn't they invite him? Did he do something to piss them off?

Perhaps they invite him and he can't afford to make his way to the tournaments

your living in the past, those days are long gone for Earl

He said on the TAR cast that he doesn't get invited any more.
That has nothing to do with being able or not to afford to go.

Maybe its becouse he is so disruptive , and acts like a ass ho--

You can't just tell the truth like that Jim. Shame on you. There must be a conspiracy angle here somewhere. Yeah, it's cause he's too good. That's the real reason.

If I was going to guess I'd say it has to do with sponsors and the fact that Earl has a higher gear than most of the guys in the tournament and therefore is a threat to run over some sponsored players.

Of course we get stupid answers like always on azbilliards, like I CLEARLY asked in the question, all personal reasons aside (I don't care if Earl did some personal wrong to someone and is the most despicable human being to ever walk the planet or w/e ppl think) Why is the possible greatest pool player to ever live not automatically invited to the greatest pool tournament in the world. He clearly deserves an invite based on his track record.

It just isn't right and for people who say the guy can't play anymore, you know nothing please stop trolling my legitimate question. If anyone has any good theories or logical explanations I'm listening.

The guy can still catch a gear and snap off a tournament, although I agree he def isn't the favorite.

Earl Strickland and world invites

I don't believe there is a lot of conspiracies or anything like that.

To me, this is an issue of simple communications.

There is no 'good' process of contacting the 'qualified' players and notifying them there is a spot available.

Suonds simple but can get complicated.

Often times the world events are NOT scheduled very far in advance.
North America get a few spots (no where near the number they used to get) and then the process of contacting the players gets underway.

Assume there are 4 spots for US players. Contact the top 8 or so players.
Now you need to get a commitment (or a negative) before you can go on to lower ranked players. Notice I already built in a cushion.

Anyone who has tried to contact multiple players and get a timely response knows what I am saying. The timeline goes south.

By the time the player that will go actually gets the spot, the time frame for tickets and planning may be jeopardized.

This can be done - but it will take someone willing to take the time and to have some policies in place for players who cannot be contacted, or don't respond in a timely manner.

I volunteered in the past but it never happened - the current situation is not acceptable.

It is a shame because I feel US participation is important.

Maybe he CLEARLY pissed off too many TDs ... does that not make sense? Who said it was personal? It's pretty cut and dried unless you're in LOVE with him.

what do you mean, he still got cuetec as a sponsor or have i missed something?

have no clue about how the WPA reasons but a solution to this could be more invitations and qualifiers, longer process so to speak?

i don't love earl but i feel for him, clearly he has got some kind of diagnosis and we all know that, he even admits it. but when you put all that shit aside - his fighting spirit, shot making, quick thinking and incredible focus is a delight to see. i hope he still has a lot of more good play in him.

in any other sport, a talent like earl would have folks around him, mental trainers and the like, to assist him with his issues. even in snooker. why don't he have that stuff?

He should be invited 1st, not being invited is not only a slap in the face to Earl, but a slap in the face to America.

Yeah, you missed something. Cuetech was a long time ago there is no Sponsorship from them anymore.

itsfroze, first of all happy 4th to you my friend and I hope all is well with you. Second, I am gonna have to dissagree with you to a certain extent. JUST MY opinion is that with all major tourneys the previous years winner should get the automatic invite. Not all the past Champions who have ever won the tourney. Thats just how I feel on that no matter if its Earl or JA ir Shane. Now if they are having problems getting people to the event and they have lets say 4 invites for each country then I would have to agree to take the top 3 on the rankings and then a wildcard of their choosing, That would get some stars to the events too from all countries. That way maybe Efren would be invited, Earl, Steve Davis, Ralph if he isn't in the top 3. So as I said I am with you and I am not. Also some of the others may be correct that the promoters of the event may look at Earl as a liability that will only cause them trouble.

Build it and they will come

Questions like this have crossed my mind for years. Now fact is fact, Earl has done some damage to himself but anyone with a functioning brain would know that it's because he is probably the MOST passionate person about the game over all the pros. I also feel that this type of action to the "NY Yankees" of pool is a clear indication of the type of people we are and how others look at us. What i mean here is that, when you are hot, the world is on your side, take a fall, and you are the spawn of Satan.

There needs to be a poster boy for this country or it's nothing, same reason Tom Cruise makes 75 million in the last 13 months and he is no where near the realm of being called a "good actor". Oh but let him have a slip and see what the people do to him and they hear the rest of the world follow and say "see, those american think that they can/are/etc.

Earl has fallen victim to this injustice and it is sad to see, perhaps his fall from greatness was partially cause by the same decision makes that govern pool it's self. Take Archer for example also, his titles are by far no small feat, yet as of today, it is only the true die hards of the sport like the OP who can still recall what these greats have done and give them the RES PECT that they deserve.

Sad to say for our new dragon slayer is next, Shane has made quite a name for himself and slowly he is coming down from his pedestal, needing the same thing that Earl needs to bring his name back into the spot light.

A BIG WIN.
