You can THINK that all you want...because you can think whatever you wish but you have an insurmountable problem...becuase you can't PROVE it with the only proof that exists...their records.

In FACT, you can't even prove that Drago was/is or ever will be the best snooker player.
Erm.... that's the point. Your current world champion is a shortstop snooker player. At their respective peaks Tony Drago would have beaten Daryl Peach with his eyes closed, and probably still could. The best female players are all ex snooker players. If, as seems likely, Drago puts his efforts into pool now I predict he will be able to extend his playing career far into his dotage, with no little success. He might as well. He has zero chance of competing at the top level of snooker anymore. What does that tell you exactly?

Here the article from the offical Mosconi Site.
==================================

EARL Strickland kept America's Mosconi Cup hopes alive but his victory was overshadowed by a bust-up with opponent Daryl Peach, who later branded The Pearl as 'scum of the earth'.

Towards the end of the match, Strickland was involved in a huge argument with World Champion Peach that threatened to become nasty.

Strickland, who had been talking constantly throughout the match, called Peach 'a cheat' after he believed the Englishman had sharked him, although referee Michaela Tabb later confirmed that it had actually been someone behind Peach and not the player himself.

Peach reacted to this insult and threatened Strickland as the two men went head-to-head, apparently close to coming to blows.

Tabb intervened and warned both players about their conduct, although the pair did shake hands at the end of the contest, a 6-3 victory to Strickland.

However, the controversy was not over yet as Strickland stormed off before being interviewed while a heated Peach heavily criticised his opponent live on television.

"Strickland is scum of the earth," raged a furious Peach.

"It's a shame as he is a great player but it shows what he has to do to win.

"I'm a sportsman, I sit in my chair and keep quiet, all of the other Europeans do and all of the rest of the American team do.

"But he is waving his arms around and speaking to the crowd - he is not a sportsman.

"He is probably one of the best players in the world but he just mars his performance with this.

"When I first started playing pool, he was one of my heroes but he has gone down in my books a lot. He mars his performance by, shall we say, being a character."

IT was a bad start for Peach as he produced a dry break and left a 1-9 combination on, which Strickland, with his first shot of the match, made.

The match was tied up at 1-1 when he scratched attempting to play safe but the American then won the next to regain the lead.

With no shot on the 1-ball off the break, Strickland opted to push out and a safety battle ensued.

I paid to watch the Mosconi cup on the net...but I wouldn't have if Earl wasn't on the team. He's one of a kind, and I wonder that you whiners don't appreciate the fact that he adds interest to your dull little lives. It'll be a shame when someone new comes along that you can complain about. I hope he stays around a long time....

That he sucks at snooker ?

you say that boro nut, but how many years now has daryl dedicated himself to nine ball? a decade? it's not like a snooker player just took up nine ball and a few weeks later is world champion.

i'm not the least surprised about the standings so far. i can't remember a good example myself of where the 'team effort' has had any major impact in u.s sports since the winter olympics back in 1980. this will be ongoing, no doubt, because of politics, parenting, schools and the overall mindset of people living between mexico and canada. shoot.

edit; to link this to the topic, earl is a team player, NOT.

Today's players are much better than the Keiths and Earls of the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Simply not true. Unless you think that today's players are also better than Efren in his prime. The Earl of the 80's could beat, and did beat, Efren at the top of his game. Earl and Efren both played close to perfect 9-ball then, and Earl's top gear was bigger than anybody's before or since.

Just came back from the Mosconi Cup with Europe taking home the cup. Earl got a little out of hand as usual with his match with Daryl Peach (Earl won the match) however, when Europe won the cup, Earl shook everyone's hand on team Europe, congradulated everyone and said a few nice words to Daryl Peach and Ralf Souquet. Nice turnout of fans, great pool playing on both teams. Congrats to team Europe.

How many years did he dedicate himself to snooker? With all due respect to Daryl he was hardly on the radar, and never likely to be. You can't tell me the best British pool players wouldn't have been snooker players if only they could have hacked it.

Even the best pool player on the planet couldn't do the reverse. They'd have to start from scratch and unlearn too much. And they're already too old before they start. There are already 13 year olds who are better potters than they are, and they're improving at a much much faster rate. If top snooker players potting ability plummets with age (and it clearly does) how could someone who's never needed to demonstrate that ability hope to reverse the trend? It's a race against time they could never win.

i agree. which shows the one thing which i have always said right from the start about this snooker/pool debate. they are completely different styles. different games. you cant tell me shane van boening or earl strickland are less gifted with a cue than say ronnie o'sullivan or say steven maguire. they have completely different styles, suited for their respective games. and it just so happens that on the surface a snooker players skills will enable him to pot balls on a pool table fine yet a pool player may have difficulties the other way around. but to think a snooker play would be able to compete once the race becomes longer is wrong.

the problem is most games in nine ball are short races, and with the luck involved if you're a half decent cueist anyone can win. snooker by nature doesn't have this problem.

I paid to watch it and I didn't watch much of it because Earl was such a jerk.

I had to vote that Earl was a a**hole.

Earl may be a great pool player but he does not come across as a great person when he is show on tv. As the old line says he is like a school in summer - no class (this perception is based only on what I see as a spectator at home watching the tv).

His behaviour was shocking and regardless of whether it was provoked or not his actions were embarassing. Pool can survive as a watchable sport with Earl's antics in the short term but iI think his behaviour will put off more people from watching than it attracts.

Add to that, does pool need the type of fans who would rather watch Earl meltdown than watch him play great pool. Whilst more people watching pool is a good thing, I think not all fans benefit the sport.

A non-pool related example of this is Ricky Hatton, an exciting fighter who managed to get boxing fans to support him but as well managed to capture a lot of non-typical fans due to his broad appeal. This culminated in one of the worst moments I have ever witnessed in boxing when the American national anthem was greeted with boos (not as bad as Tyson eating ears or James Butler sucker punching Richard Grant).

I do feel that the type of people that Earl attracts to the sport are the same type of fans who harass him.

All that said he was out of order with Souqer and I thought the guy on Sky Sports said it was a European player wh threw the dummy (pacifier) at Earl (probably symbolic as Earl threw his toys out the pram like a baby, spat the dummy).

Earl is either a 14K a$$hole, or dumb enough to believe someone who told him his tournament B.S. is what fans want.

It's too bad, really, because he had talent.

Putting him into the Hall of Fame, unfortunately, validated his act, and made it a terminal affliction. That's my 2-cents.

Happy Holidays, all. :)

I agree. Earl was great in his day, and its sad to see him act like he does now.

I also hate to hear about people messing with him. Most do it now because they know it will get to him. He gets heckled just like most ballplayers that melt down when the same happens to them. If he didnt act like a baby he wouldnt have half the problems he does. If he would get back to business he could tear it up like the good ol days.

One of the best shotmakers of all time is letting hecklers decide his fate. Sad IMO.

Too bad that the lot of that mob was the crowd booing Earl...

The crowd at an American venue... booing an American player..in an international event... kinda says alot , dont ya think?

Who would want to scuff with Earl... I mean if that dude drops "The People's Elbow" on yah with that freaking 5lb pad ..then your done .. out cold !!!!

BTW smoke, ROLL TIDE!:D

I only watch American Idol when it's the really bad singers.

Earl should be taken off of the Mosconi Cup team. I mean, is he one of the five best players we have out there right now? Not even close.
