Earl tossed out of SBE...

Thanks for the explaination, Jam. I knew there must be more going on than I knew. And you haven't disappointed me. I was just curious.

I grew up in SC and played tournament around the Southeast almost every weekend in the mid 80s to early 90s when Keith was a staple in Greenville and Knoxville. I don't know if Keith remembers, but Burl, Susie, Keith, me and a ton of other folks had tons of fun (and some excitement) back then :). I'm a huge fan of Keith's, and I would enjoy nothing more than to see Ether out competing again.

I guess that's why I want to see Earl make a comeback. I remember the old guard, and those old days fondly. And it's just not the same as it was then. Ahhhh. Nostalgia...

Mike

Thanks for your very kind reply, Mike.:)

It breaks my heart to see Earl doing things in public that are unsettling. I do know that deep down, Earl is a good man. His heart has been broken, shattered to pieces by a scrupulous female. It takes a long, long time to heal when it comes to affairs of the heart. Some folks never get over it. Earl needs a *good* woman by his side, one who can help him be everything he is capable of being.:smiling-heart:

But you have to love yourself first. One can't expect anyone else to love them if they don't even love themselves first. I know it's hard to believe, but Earl does not love himself right now. :(

Next time I see him in person, though, he will most definitely get an earful from me.

Not defending Earl, but....

I don't post very often, and only when a topic really sparks my interest. This one has lured me in.
What I'm curious about is the TD's account of the story. I was there when Earl got kicked out but was too far to hear what was actually said. I guess what I don't understand is this... Frank talks about all the rude and disruptive things that Earl was doing but the reason he kicks him out is when Earl says "You have to call him?". THAT was the reason? All the other things he said or did were forgivable, but because Earl asked THAT question he was kicked out? Am I the only person that finds this strange?
I'm definitely not defending Earl but I am however questioning Frank's decision making.

And now that I'm on the topic. Who is this guy? A comedian, really? This is who we have to run a professional pool event. If he was just a host or announcer maybe I would understand. But a tournament director, that's a joke. Does he even play pool? What qualifies him to make pool-related decisions whether it be about the rack or hit calls? This guy was no very professional and if anything he was a distraction. After he kicked Earl out, he gets on the mic to explain the situation to everyone, which took over 5 minutes, while there are matches in progress? I don't know, maybe I'm crazy but it seemed to me that this guy was abusing his position during the event while also doing some self-promoting.

i didnt see this situation but i showed up just in time for mika's last match against alex and seen his, which seemed a bit calmer. but he was throwing his stick on the table during his turn to rack and was obviously irritated with how his game was. appleton later ,against shane, had one throwing his bridge and kicking the rack under the table. people are fallible. and going for 20k and not shooting your game is frustrating. being that it was my first pro tourney im not sure if these were isolated incidences. was an awesome experience watching these beast pocket balls and interact with the fans.

Those were merely acts of mild frustration compaired to what went down prior. And your are right... The level of play and strength of that field at VF was STRONG with a capital "S". Having been to the expo many times.. Gotta say I spent more time in the arena than I ever had before. More hill/hill matches than I ever seen.. Plus all the 10-8 and 10-7. Alex was very entertaining all weekend. First time I've had the pleasure of seeing him live. Then add the tragic death of Ginky and the fact that the NY pros came in with heavy hearts but still played with great spirit.. It was a great tournament

Hello Fans of Earl,

Many of you posting in this Forum all have your right to say what you would like. I started playing pool over 20 years ago and don't get to play as much as I would like or if any due to work and life changes.

I was and still am a Fan Of Earl Strickland.. With that said I am also a fan of... Pro players who have the respsect of the sport the Players of who are Absolute Ambassadors to this game.. Rocket.. Robles..Mika...Williams..Appleton....this list could go on and on...the players who bring the cue and skill to the table and win like a true Pro.. winning shaking the hand of the apponent or losing and doing the same.. Those pros that walk away saying "I" Played bad Or "I had what it took today to put together a Win"

I also am a huge fan of Allen Hopkins who has put 19 years of his work and Heart to put together the Super Billiards Expo..and his entire life into a sport that he loves..

I also have something that I take pride in I have self respect..

I like the input and the talk. I like the fact that people find it funny that I am a comedian and do the Expo for Allen. I would like to let you all know that Earl being Ejected was not an easy thing to do.

If you want to know the whole Story Read the Story that was posted earlier it is truly what happened.. The story that is written in InsidePoolMag.com

I did not eject Earl he got himself tossed

Good luck to all of you

Frank

Frank,

Thanks for the story... everyone knows that Earl deserves more than what he usually gets. My only question is, "Did you tell people before the match that evening that you were gonna find a reason to boot Earl whether he did anything else or not?" I think you did, because several people reported on here that they heard you say it. This isn't a little weekly tournament in BFE...It's the SBE... If you did, as the TD of one of the most prestegious tournaments in the United States, that showed very little, really no class at all on your part. Even if you feel tht way, those are things that need not be said aloud. And it shows me that even though you should have been respected more by Earl, you are a person that probably deserve some of the things that happen.

Everyone always likens Earl to McEnroe... Well, he made his bit arguing fouls with refs and going off at press functions. Earl runs his chops offending the people he plays, disrespecting spectators, being racial, disturbing professionals playing on tables near him that are playing to put food on their families tables (many of which have spent thousands of $ to travel from the othe side of the world to be there), goes off on little kids..... The better comparison would be to Charlie Sheen. Anyone that compares him to McEnroe needs to check themselves cause they are spewing bs.

McEnroe was absolutely horrible and should have been banned for a year or two. But there's real money in tennis.

Earl is one of my favorite players of all time, but I will say this, he was warned in his very first match against Parica that he needed to stop his antics. I could tell Jose was bothered by what was going on. So Earl had more than a few opportunities to get tossed in his first match. How many more do you give someone? Frank has a TOUGH job, and I think he did the best he could.

I really wanted to go talk to Earl and tell him he was playing great and to ignore the stuff around him. There was not one thing that happened to Earl that should have made him react that way (in first match). If he were to ignore the external stuff, man, he was playing well. He missed a relatively easy 10 ball because the game before Frank applauded Jose for winning a game and Earl saw him applaud and it irked him. Maybe Frank should not applaud any player for winning a game, but it was a nice out. So when Earl missed, I could tell he was thinking about what Frank did the previous game, he wanted to see what Frank would do after he made a winning shot (kind of in his line of sight too), and Earl just didn't concentrate on making the ball and missed.

Every major tournament I have attended, the TD, if supervising the area would show appreciation for every game played.

I am an Earl fan, and I know this is completely off topic but I don't want to start ANOTHER Earl thread.

I was watching a match last night of him where he was using finger extenders to make it easier to bridge. Then, in another video he was *****ing about "jump sticks, phenolic tips, extensions on the cue"

Were those finger extenders considered illegal?

Guess I'm really getting old. And so is Earl and the threads about him. Earl is not going to change. He is who he is. Sure, he could take more meds. What will that accomplish? Jokes about whether he wins bacause of the meds? Unfair advantage? After the next Earl thread, think I'll puke:barf:!

In McEnroe's book he explained that they could have stopped him from his outbursts at any time but those outbursts were making tennis so much money that they let him continue.

I couldn't stop laughing after watching this.... and I'm a huge tennis fan. Dude, everyone in the stadium (and I mean EVERYONE) is rooting for McEnroe when he's battling the ref. No matter what, right or wrong, they hope McEnroe wins the argument (which, of course, he never does. It's like rooting for Wile E. Coyote against the Road Runner).

I LOVE rooting for the Coyote. I always hope the Coyote will get that Road Runner and eat his frickin' neck like a spare rib. But, that's how I role.

I think McEnroe was a great player, and I love him as a commentator. I didn't really care for the outbursts years ago, though. My point was I think it's a pretty good comparison to Earl. BTW, keep on channeling Charlie Sheen.

....yeah, yeah, yeah, It's not a question of, is his behavior correct, of course it's not, it's that he has been the best player ever, in nine-ball!! How has he been paid off, even from the beginning, by a bunch of know nothings that don't even understand his many contributions to the game! Most of you are the type of players that argue about playing safeties in nine-ball, still! Is it any wonder "REAL Pro's" don't come on these forums for long???

I'm sure your a great bunch of deserving fans, all of you criticizers. Pool is what it is and no more! T.V. in any country doesn't want pool because of no market base, most of the time, that's your end of it. So what the fu** are you supporting in this sport? Be thankful for the GREAT CHAMPIONS IN THIS SPORT, PAST AND PRESENT, they've given their lives to it and for what? Fans like you, good job! POOL IS, AND HAS BEEN, A SPORT generally disrespected, even by the fans. Any wonder it's best are frustrated with the results of their lives within this sport?

Notice, if you will, anyone who gets it, doesn't even question the antics and gamesmanship of "all the other top pro players? Earl is just, such a disappointment, to "YOUR fantasy champions image, isn't he? He's flawed in significant ways, obviously, but hey, after all he's only human, just like you and me! That's what the grace is for, dude. You know what, it's all in your head anyway!!!

That sound like enough like Earl to make you happy? I wish I could play like him, too!!!:banghead: :outtahere:
So if I understand you correctly...oh...never mind...LOL

You know what? You are completely right and I am completely wrong.
Fans "like me" and people like me "know-nothings" are the reason Earl is where he is today.

Thanks for setting me straight.

EARRRRRL!!!!!!!

;) F-it. I still love the guy. I could care less if they find him wearing make-up and a wig with his pants down crapping in the side pocket with the lights out.

Who cares.

I mean, Vincent van Gogh cut his own ear off and look how much people would LOVE to own one of his originals. That guy could have cut his own ear off, wrapped it around a scallop and bacon and stuck a toothpick through it and ATE it and people would STILL shoot the next guy if it meant owning one of his paintings.

Earl obviously is bipolar. Maybe medicated, maybe not. The man has 5 US Opens and however many world 9ball titles. Not to burst everyone's bubble, but people go to watch THAT GUY play--- not someone who's never won much. Even if he's a train wreck--- he's a legend and then some.

Tiger Woods sent the golf world spinning banging whores in Vegas, bringing diner waitresses back to his house (an ugly one at that), banging them there, hurt his gorgeous wife/kid/family, screams "F#$K" and "Son of a B1tch" while throwing his clubs down on missed shots and yet....get this... they still allow him to play in the tournaments. Why? Because.....*DRUM ROLL* ...... NOBODY GIVES A RAT'S ASS ABOUT THE OTHER PROS.... THEY'RE THERE TO SEE TIGER PLAY BECAUSE HE'S A WINNER (well, he hasn't been lately, but that's just because he hasn't gone back to whore-mongering yet).

You can duct-tape every pro in that arena together and you still don't have 5 US Open Titles. People wanna watch Earl - end of story.... even if it's to see if he can finish the event or melt-down. Nobody strokes like that guy.

So, while I appreciate the "Earl has to be stopped" talk and many are right when he's out of line..... but it is what it is. Earl is exciting and everyone else isn't. If a TV producer walked in wanting to do a pool reality show, etc, ..... they go straight to Earl and run over everyone on the way.

Does it hurt pool.... C'MON--- no. Not even close. It's crazy crap like his antics that will raise pool into something MARKETABLE. Pool will NEEEEVER get anywhere with "cricket-style" talk like, "Hello ol' chap... fancy a tea and crumpet before our match?" Pool isn't golf and will NEVER be golf so stop trying to think anything short of PGA-Tour personas (on average) will hurt pool. Pool's already at rock bottom.

What we DO NEED is someone like Earl to have a meltdown, pick up a folding chair and bash it over whoever is sharking him. While they're down, jump up on the table and drop "the big leg" on their throat and then proceed to win by default. Maybe then.... pool will get back on TV.

Sorry for the rant...
If not for your super sexy avatars I would have a real issue with you, LOL
