Earl's break cue

I hate this damn game!

I just saw Justin's interview with Earl about his match with Shane this weekend. Earl said he is using a break cue that is 29oz and 70"! Why would he use a monster cue like that? When I am breaking I feel like I lose some control of the cue if it is too heavy (my cues are about 18.5oz, 20 or more is too heavy for me). Just my opinion, to each his own I guess.. Thoughts?

He plays with that cue too. Not just for breaks. I guess playing on a 5 x 10, he feels he needs that size & weight to move the ball around easily enough.

Dean...I betcha dollars to donuts that SVB makes more balls on the break, using a normal size and weight cue, than that monstrosity Earl's gonna use.

I watched it again and he doesn't specifically say it is a break cue. I can understand needing the extra length for his player on a 10' table. Still seems way too heavy, but I haven't won 5 U.S. Opens yet :D Can't wait to see this match!

If the consensus is that heavier cues are worse for breaking, why is there still a 25 oz. limit on break cues in major tournaments?

I always believed that the weight of the break cue should go up as long as you can still stroke it just as fast. For some people a heavier break cue could be beneficial. I compare it to swinging a heavier baseball bat. If I can swing a heavier bat just as fast as a lighter bat, why use the lighter one? Just my opinion.

Earl's Break Cue IS his playing cue

His playing cue is 63" long and 23 ounces and , (to my knowledge), uses it for breaking, too!

That is the normal dimensions of his cue, but he modified it for the big table. It looks like there is an extension on the back, making it 70" and 29oz. It looks like he's about to spear a rhino.

imo, I think the lighter the cue is, the fast the break speed will be. but I can't believe earl will be breaking with that heavy cue, how can the break be so fast? by physics lighter will make cueball go faster, but maybe its about cueball control, I just dont know, we'll be able to see his break tonight thought, I am excited, can't wait :)
