Earl's new cue

You know what, I just want to watch some pool. I grew up when you could go to any town and play everyone that played for money and make a great living. There was always a great match to watch, no matter where you were. It all seems to have changed to something else. I just want to see something like the old days one more time. What could be better than the worlds best players seeing who really is the best.

Great statement. Thanks for doing it.

I just gave Earl another new cue for the DCC. It is a Tulip Wood, stainless steel joint, black Buffalo Wrap, 17 oz., with a 5 oz. Ebony extension to make it 63 inches and 23 ounces. He will have this at DCC and I don't know if he will be breaking or shooting with this cue.

Cool but you better make an adjustment 17+5 = 22oz

It changed equal to the length and weight added, just a little closer to his hand. Right where Earl likes it.

Seems like Earl discovered that he's a rearward-balanced cue type of guy, and probably discovered this that one day when he was playing around with that cue extension and "left it on to see what would happen." It's probably a combination of the extra length, and backwards-shifted balance point of the cue he found to be desirable.

Mike G., what say ye?

Whatever it is, it is good.

Earl will be up at Youngstown Ohio after the Derby on the 4th to the 6th to play in the Ohio State Bar Table All Around at Ice Breakers Pool Hall. You can see this new cue and may be participate in the tournament.

Don't be so sure!

C'mon, whaddya think, someones gonna copy the specs and shoot like Earl? You dangled the carrot in front of us, now damn it, give us a bite.

Besides, there ain't too many combinations of cue materials that over the years hasn't been tried. While his cue is somewhat unique, there's probably been/or is one similar like it out there somewhere. Probably more than one!!!

It ain't exactly Homeland Security or Pentagon papers we're talkin' here. C'mon Mike, give us some more infant

I can say for absolute sure that there has never been one made like this before.

I was doing this back in 2003 and people thought I was nuts. Now that you and Earl have been experimenting, you guys came up with the same conclusion I did back in 2003. I have since been testing and I still am doing the same thing. I am sure it won't be long till most of the pros and aspiring players will be playing with the same thing. The added length really helps. Especially on the big tables. The extra weight let you move around the table effortlessly with twice as much accuracy because you don't have to swing the cue so hard to get the cue ball to do what you want it to. All the Masse cues are 34oz plus. That should be the first clue to the players out there because the heavy weight makes it easier to put the spin on the ball. Are you guy checking the tips with a durometer during your experiments? If not, this could change your results drastically. Just because it says soft doesn't me it is actually soft. And how soft is soft. 58,59,60,61,62 etc?

WTF??? How did the word "infant" get into my quote??? It wasn't in my post that was quoted!!!

Maniac (doesn't really care, just curious )

Earl should consider himself very lucky to have a cue maker of your status to work with him to find a cue that works best for him. Many players may play their whole pool playing life with the wrong type of cue and not realize that there's something else out there that would make them a better player. I've never heard of another pro player having the advantage Earl has had with you in getting the right cue to suit his style of play.

When Earl has his mind into playing and isn't distracted I agree 100% with you that "He is the worlds greatest living player" especially in 9 ball.

James

Earl can also consider himself lucky that a POOL PLAYER of Mike's status is ALSO a top cue maker and is willing to keep tweaking the specs.

People either forget or don't know that Mike Gulyassy can dab it with the best of them.

Cues will eventually get longer. The days of being forced to play with a 57" cue are long gone. An inch got added, and people are slowly realizing that 59+" cues are simply a better choice....unless you have your table in a small room!

Oh great. I just figured out how to make cases for 31" parts..... :-)

You know for about two years with Instroke we were coming to the USA and selling cases and at every show we'd have to take the bottoms off the case and shorten the amount of foam rubber inside to accomodate the 29" butts with 1.5" pins and joint protectors. Because when I first designed the cases I was so naive that I just used my Schon as a template and my McDermott with the 3.8x10" pin didn't have a joint protector. So after two years of doing all this work on the spot at shows I still had to argue with my partners to get them to agree to lengthen the case by another inch. That is one reason I don't design by committee anymore.

Pretty soon, John, you'll be in competition with Thule in the car roof rack business to transport your cases, because people will demandingly question, "how am I going to fit this inside my car?" And thus, JB's entry into the car roof rack business. :D

Well there is of course precedent in a sense. Snooker players carry cases that are about 45" long or even some that are about 60" long. And there have been some funny stories about people not finding space in the car for the cues to comfortably fit.

edit feature...

Maniac (doesn't really care, just curious )Just add it in or change it

I noticed it as well. Sticks and stones... LOL

I've had joint protectors turned down as small as they could go, to fit into a case before. And this was only a 59" cue with 29.5" sections.

Bigger cases are a must now as well!

Bigger cues?

I know Earl might be a exception with a 63" cue,but I remember about 15 to 20 years ago they were asking pros secrets to the game.A few of them said shorter cues were there secret. Now a days its going to be longer.I think based on your height and wing span of your arms should determine any type of length variance. Most people that shoot with a 63" cue would probably suck wind,I know I would:smile:
