Economic situation and rising gas prices changed your play?

No

You Americans are so funny. $4 dollars a gallon LOL. We pay over $6 here in Canada, and we don't ***** this much lol ;)

What's funny is you Canadians have been sitting on one of the largest oil reserves in the world and y'all just figured out how to get it out of the ground and refine it..

We are lucky for sure

Us Americans are very lucky. I know gas is much higher in other countrys.
The bottom line is, we all have to deal with the situation as best we can.
If this means I have to manage my time and have a more productive practice so my pool time goes from 4 days a week to maybe 2 days a week, then thats what I do. And then I am smarter about what tournaments I attend based on expenses versus what percentage I have to place well and money in the particular event I chose to attend. For me its boils down to what is the best decision based on coming out a little ahead.(Im not greedy, LOL, just dont want to be backwards)

We'll be there very soon.

And no one is *****ing... we are just having a discussion about how these things affect us. What is the big deal to you? And why do you have to be nasty about it?

Yes, and by the time your at $6, we will be at $8 or $9 lol. Im not trying to be nasty, I just find it funny how many times I come on here, and see people complaining about "GAS" prices, and pool.

P.S B itching was a bit harsh. Ill use complaining next time ;)

I work at my pool hall, so I don't believe gas prices are going to effect the amount of time I spend at the pool hall :D ..... I think really it's not the gas prices that are effecting pool halls as much as just summer is here so people are playing less.

I was just referencing the gas prices. If gas is a buck more expensive than we are used to, and your car gets decent gas mileage, you are only spending an additional few dollars to get to the pool room (considering you were going there anyways). I would love to see someone actually quit pool because of gas prices.......

Its not the $1.40/Gal we are Pay More for GAS, ($2.80/Gal-$4.20/Gal) its the cost of everything else like Food, Clothing, Tires, etc. Plus Medical Insurance that goes up 35% July First.

You know some people have to commute to work over an hour each way, 5 days a week. Figure that out a 4-1/3 week work month. Say 120 miles a day round trip in a car that gets 20-24 MPG.

That add up to about $160.00/ month more just to get to work.

I drive about 800-900 miles every month, my personal vehicle get 18 MPG, so that $1.40 Spike in Gas Prices cost us about $70.00/month more for just GAS.

Add to that the cost of everything else going up. NOT HAPPY.

Last year -

I made most every SE Open event either playing or helping TK run the tournaments.

I also attended almost every Ladies Spirit Tour event to support the players.

I made a large majority of the Seminole tour events.

2007

gas to and from - $40-$50
Hotel - about $70
Food/drink - about $50
Entry fees - $50- $150

Average cost - $300

2008

Gas to and from - $70-$80
Hotel - Out of the question.
Food drink - about $65
Entry - About the same
Average cost - about $400 (just for a regional event). That is almost as much as my car payment.

Now I didn't even factor in table time when I practice. Unlike some players that I know, the pool hall actually charges me when I play - give classes (they add 25% to the table time). This is the first time in a long time I have had this expense. Hopefully, that will change in the near future - I'm planning on getting another table. I don't care if I have to have it set up in a climate controlled storage unit - I ain't paying $9 an hour to play on shitty tables.

These days, I would rather save my money and put it towards my own table. Instead of going to tournaments on the weekends, I am scheduling my classes and instructional clinics on the weekends. It just makes more sense to me.

I have been cutting back on pool trips for the past year and change because gas has just been going up and up along with everything else.I like to be in the poolhall, its like a home away from home but if I can hitch a ride I will which is better for me and the person I am going with and also the environment, less money for the greedy oil companies too. :)

Some people depending on their income bracket havent felt the affects of the gas increase but more and more will as things begin to rise and the economy is hurt more and more by this.I do believe when gas is $6 a gallon in the next 12 months you will see alot of things rising and people still getting paid the same. You might not be complaining now but give it time and it will start to hurt you and yours if your middle class, some people wont feel it at all, look at some of the Hollywood starlets who run out of gas, they dont even know you put gas in cars, lol, here is a funny vid. :D

Where's Jed Clampett?

I have operated auto service centers for 20 years (oil changes mainly). I have never seen a worse economic climate. I just closed 2 service centers, closed my nice office in exchange for a closet, and for the first time I laid people off. Oil prices are f'g ridiculous (I paid $2.23/gallon in 2000 and effective 8/1/08 will pay over $7). I can't recoup it.

It all goes hand in hand. Paying $100 for a tank of fuel, on top of a drop in income = sacrificing in all areas of spending = sacrificing in my approach to the development of my game. Less travel and table time at halls w/ players that would improve my game.

I'm gettin' my .22 and going Jed Clampett hunting!

Good post as some maybe will see other are suffering.

It affects us all in some form or another. If you are unemployed, underpaid or retired on a fixed income it is definetly going to effect how you spend your time and money. Fot the folks on a budget there is very little to cheer about financially speaking thus there is less disposable income which is what people use for entertainment. Combine the rising costs of eveything with the lower value of real estate / job losses etc and something has got to give. I can imagine the restaurant industry is getting slammed right now just like the pool halls. The restaurant business has had the number 1 failure rate of small businesses for a long time.
I am playing much less for many reasons some named above and others that are health related and I honestly do not see the end in sight. Wish I could!!!
Good luck to All,
Dan

In Europe the price is much near 7.5$ a gallon or even more. Depends of the country :(

In Europe the Countries, and Cars are both smaller also. People for the most part do not travel great distance to work. Many place in Europe they bicycle, or mo-Ped, scooter around.

Speeking of Europe they also get in some Countries 6 - 8 Weeks a YEAR Paid Vacation. :D

The main problem with our economy is the private federal reserve bank counterfeiting our money and making it worthless. A one ounce silver dollar still buys about 4 gallons of gas. And a "dollar" has always been one ounce of silver. It is federal reserve notes printed out of thin air that are not worth anything.

Thomas Jefferson warned us:

"If the American people ever allow private banks
to control the issue of their money,
first by inflation and then by deflation,
the banks and corporations that will
grow up around them (around the banks),
will deprive the people of their property
until their children will wake up homeless
on the continent their fathers conquered."

I filled up my car the other day and it was $75. It had me thinking about how do kids in school pay this kind of bill? Hell when i was a kid, $10-15 filled the car up and alot of times we passed the hat and got a few bucks from everyone.

The other thing I thought about was how I fill up every week and so does my wife. So we have a $600 gas bill a month or $7200 a year. This is the equivalent of $10k of annual salary if you factor in take home deductions of 30% for withholding and SSI/Medicare. I had read somewhere that smart financial planning has a person putting 25-30% towards housing. For those making $40k..gas is working out to be what that person is suppose to spend on housing.

I just dont understand how anyone can live on 40-50k a year and have a family, home, a car...it seems impossible. That said, I also know alot of folks who are suffering through hard times. A friend of mine that owns a few restaurants was telling me the other day that his business is down 40-50%. When he told me that I was trying to imagine how I would handle a 50% pay cut. Scary.

Back to pool...I havent been going to alot of tournaments and its partly related to the sad state of affairs in economy. In tougher times, you have to focus on your job to keep competitive and go forward. Im finding it alot harder to justify staying out late to play pool when my day job suffers the next day because im running on 3-4 hrs sleep. In tougher times in business, you cannot give your edge away chasing down pool glory and $200 at 2am on a wednesday night.

I better stop thinking about this before I convince myself to bail on the Seminole event this weekend. Im taking off a day a work and will probably spend $500 this weekend to get into an event where most of the guys would swim through a river of poop to give me the last 4 gambling. :(

How has the current economic situation and rising gas prices effected your play?
1. Do you play as often each week?
2. Do you travel to go play in a tournament more or less?
3. Have you put off buying a pool table or cues?
4. Do you still play leagues and will you?

1. no
2. I travel less
3. n/a no room for a table and have the cue that suits me
4. yes and yes.

In short, while I'm playing less pool, it's not a whole lot less. I'm less likely to travel across town for a weekly tournament, but I'm still going to travel out of town to bigger tournaments when they come up.

I'm cutting back on other things in my life (food, drinks and women) in order to minimize the impact on my pool hours. I'm spending less on things like drinks and food when I do go out to play.

Whoa is me!!

I don't travel over 50 miles anymore, where I traveled up to 250 miles before for tournaments. I am on a tight budget, and I am even passing up on some tournaments now where I don't foresee myself getting into the money.

Have you noticed the grocery store prices going up everytime you go anymore? I go grocery shopping once a month, and prices are higher each time.

Now, it's catching up to restaurants, and they are all raising prices.
