Efren Reyes' Bank Off The Point

This showcases Efren's uncanny ability to find the unseeable. He is a true asset to our sport!

He's too darn smart and too darn creative. We're lucky to have him playing in our lifetimes imo. He's hit hundreds of ridiculous shots in matches that are on video so he won't just be a legend about whom we tell the next generation. They will be able to see it thankfully.

It's not that easy to duplicate this shot, even after watching the video...
It's fun to believe otherwise, but I doubt that Efren was aiming for the point. He was just trying to hit the rail close to the point, put the OB near his pocket and get the cue ball safe. Aiming for the point is fraught with peril and Efren knows it better than most.

If the ball went off of the point near Efren's pocket, trust me that's what he intended to do. Efren is very creative. What about the shot where he playes the cue ball of the side pocket point to pocket a object ball in the corner

I believe that as well. I also remember a shot similar to this in Freddy's DVD's - "Bank Shots that Don't Go, But Do! Volumes 1 & 2". IIRC, Freddy demonstrates the one and two rail version of this same shot.

I think he was shooting that shot intentionally. I heard he did it a few years back at Derby City many times. It might have been the last year he won it. But then again, that's just from poolroom stories, I wasn't there.

Sorry, but I don't trust you to know what Efren intended.

Efren is very creative.
And very intelligent. I don't think playing a soft shot off his opponent's pocket point is a smart choice even for Efren.

He didn't risk jawing that ball in his opponent's pocket.

For the $? If I ever play either of them, I hope they'll try this shot. It's more sensitive to error than a bank/combo played the same way, and way more costly if you miss. I think they're both too smart to play it on purpose.

Here's the diagram of the shot from that video:

He clearly intends to hit the rail, not the point.

Here is another off the point shot Freddy demonstrates -

Freddy The Beard - Eddie Taylor Shot
Here's where that shot hits the rail (not the point):

Don't be afraid to bow to greatness when it's right there in front of your eyes ,Efren was absolutely shooting for the point he is way to good to miss something from that close. Not to mention that it did (the cue ball) exactly what he wanted it to do. jmho

Although I want to believe Efren intended to play the point and know Efren has his way to entertain the crowd, I'd have to agree with Patrick that the shot was too risky to attempt. Moving the ball cross-side was certainly one of his intentions, but putting the CB behind the rack was probably more of what he wanted. This is yet another example that good player gets 'lucky' more often than not.

He not only played that shot, Accustats taped him doing it earlier in the tourney. I believe you can hear Danny D (?) saying "he did it again" or something like that.

Yes, it's possible Efren's mind is better at pool than PJ's. Maybe Efren can think of, and execute, shots that aren't logical for PJ. Hard to believe, but it's possible.

It might help to not think of the "point" as a small dot (which would be hard to reliably hit), but a small region where the rail is more compliant and allows the ball to bank backwards. Think about that for a moment & then try some shots on a local table. You might be amazaed at what you can do when banking near, and into, the "point". You might even be able to Do What Efren Does.

I think there's no noubt he was trying that in the hole... It was just "lucky" he stroke it such a speed it went to barr the hole ;)

Nah Efren is the Man!!!!h

The way I see it, if Danny Diliberto said Efren played it off the point, then Efren played it off the point.
