I’m not here to defend Shaw or argue. I’m going to give insight that might have not came across on a computer or TV screen.

I was there, Shaw was responding to the shit talk from the rail.

The rail cast the first stone

Shaw responded with a natural response

It was kinda funny actually. And didn’t seem out of line at all being there live 3 rows up. I’ll be there again tmr sitting next to Billy Thorpe and his crew.

Now had Shaw cast the first stone-different story. But it didn’t happen that way.

So in summary it wasn’t out of line imo. It was part of the show and was incited by the rail.

I wanted Earl to win as much as anyone, I spoke to lots of guys who played on the Mcup in the past about that match today and everyone was behind Earl. Nobody gave a thought to Shaw’s antics provoked by the rail.

Afterwards Shaw and Thorpe hugged it out for a long hug off camera. Nobody was pissed at Shaw that I noted in the building. As I mentioned on TV I’m certain it seemed out of line and different.

I would say he more than earned it with his press conference antics. I know he likes the banter back and forth. The crowd is definitely getting under his skin, but good for him for playing great through it even if he is letting out his emotions.

Years ago I went to a TAR match between Jayson Shaw and Mike Dechaine. They showed up in the same rental car and we all went for dinner together. I'm not implying they chopped the cash but lets not take pregame hype for real feelings.

You get it! When Skylar is in London he does the "ear cup" to insight the European crowd. We all love it when he does. It is no different.

Pro wrestling has evolved a lot since then. Your comment about it being entertainment for people with an IQ less then 65 is born out of ignorance. Plus, WWE either sells out or gets close to selling out 2 arenas per week with a fan base pool could only dream of. The mosconi cup is the most watched pool event of the year for a reason and part of it is the storylines and the environment, just like sports entertainment.

Playful antics are different. No one would complain if Jayson, Josh, or Sky were shushing the crowd, thumping their chests, etc. Filler looked like he wanted to fight that guy in the front row. And the look on Shaw's face when he mocked that guys "ooooh" had anger written all over it. I kinda like the antics. :)

Back in the heyday of Hulk Hogan me and a friend would got stoned on pot and watch wrestling.
Funny as hell stoned.
 
A tale about Ali comes to mind here. A young (then) Cassius Clay before his first pro bout. He appearing on a local TV morning show. Asked about his upcoming fight, he said he planned to do his best, and that he expected to win. Also on the same show was pro wrestler "Gorgeous George", promoting his event. George predicted blood, mayhem, possible death...

Ali's fight..a gate of a few hundred. The pro wresting show? A packed house. Ali decided right then to make a change.

What was really funny was to watch it with the sound off. Turn the sound off, maybe with a buzz going, definitely some good music, hilarious to watch the wrestling without the sounds to sell it!

Occasionally the wrestlers got a bit carried away though. I have seen them jump on the other one and then jump back the way they came from. We had a local circuit and local talent too. Metal chairs are a favorite prop. Make a lot of noise, don't do much damage. One night one of our local boys got carried away and swatted the other one with the chair held edgeways! That stretched him out awhile for real!

Talking about the two sides riding together. Hacksaw Duggan was a goodguy major star. The Iron Sheik was his arch enemy. They were caught riding around in Duggan's fancy pick-up smoking pot together. Duggan could have rode out smoking pot but buddies with his nemesis, he had to skip to another part of the country.

A friend cut a lot of the wrestler's wives hair, some of the wrestlers. She asked Duggan's wife if she wasn't embarrassed about Duggan's antics. The lady said "Not at all as long as he is bringing home $250,000 a year!" That was in mid-eighties dollars, not shabby at all.

Those guys are a lot bigger than they look on TV. I met one of the smaller ones coming through the door from the other direction when I stopped for an RC. He filled the door top to bottom and side to side with a couple little notches above his shoulders. I wouldn't want to piss in any of them's ear!

There was a chuckle, a wrestling bear came to town including being open to challenges. Twenty or fifty bucks, stay in the ring three minutes and you got five hundred or a thousand. I don't remember exact figures. Anyway, with a bunch of the wrestlers living in town they turned out to watch the bear. People noticed them and tried to get them to go in the ring with the bear. "Hell no, we have to make our living at this!"

One last chuckle in this post. Dr Death Steve Murdock I believe was the name, lived in some apartments on the highway with a tasty wife or girlfriend. They would go jogging together. She would fall behind a bit and the local cowboys would be hollering and blowing horns at her only to have Steve turn back if they harassed her too long!

that is what brings in an audience. they can be real or manufactured but they need to be there.

Anudder way of saying if the show won't draw a crowd you have to put on a sideshow that does!

Years ago I was racing dirt track cars when I wasn't playing pool. One night my car wasn't ready to race so I was engaged in my second favorite thing at the track, maybe third as I did enjoy the pretty girls. At the moment though I was drinking beer and getting pretty tight watching other people race. I met another driver in the same shape at the beer box. He insisted I come meet his wife. Why not? Bill and I weren't real close but I didn't have any problems with him either.

We come to the stands and find where his wife is sitting. Bill introduces me. "This is Hu!" She gives a blank look to that and a few other things. Then Bill says, "He drives that orange 57 Chevy late model. She starts off yelling, "THAT SON OF A, ________ oh, nice to meet you, and she gives me a sweet smile. "Yes ma'am, that son of a bitch. Nice to meet you too." We chatted and were quite friendly and I found out where both ran a business that I passed by pretty often so I started dropping in to visit now and then. Bill's wife and I easily became friends but it surprised me to realize that some in the stands had a real and intense dislike of me.

Much like pool, I met everyone on the track halfway or a little more. However they treated me I treated them. Never a problem with Bill but I might have had some pretty good battles with other drivers that were friends of hers.

Things are rarely quite what they seem to the spectators.

That might be why he comes across as smug and annoying sometimes. To be fair I haven't watched a bunch of his matches or met him in person so I could totally have the wrong impression. I do think most pool players need to be more animated. That's why when I dog a shot the whole room knows. I just wish someone had told me that while bat flips are popular, yeeting my cue after running the table is a no-no.
