Everyone complains about pool just needing a major sponsor....

Everyone in this industry is like those you see throwing change into a wishing well making wishes and hoping they come true. When someone from this industry come up to that wishing well, they throw in a penny so it lands right next to a quarter, then reaches in a takes the quarter out.... still feeling good about the penny they donated!

I'm gonna have to refer you to my first post lol.

The sport is dry as a mid August day in Arizona.

Compare billiards to chess.

Pool doesn't have to be dry.

Sponsor a tourney...

Players got to have a constant mic.

Sharking allowed w respect. No commenting while down, basic stuff...

Player's encouraged to talk about their shots as well as opponents.

That would be a learning situation for many and develop more interest.

Creates more drama, humor, tension.

This will develop charecters in pool. Players and non-players will connect.

I want to see banter and narration, active vocal pool.

Tell me you wouldn't enjoy that.

We were discussing the same thing in the "Ideas for Pool Movies" Thread.
http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=454313

You have a great idea, it would be like the "Skins" golf match each year where they mic the players.
Full Time Mics in Golf? It may happen.
http://www.golf.com/tour-and-news/microphones-pga-tour-players-i-cant-see-any-reason-why-we-shouldnt

Also, a "Pool Skills Match" once a year could be interesting.

How about "Celebrity Pool" where popular stars and personalities shoot the BS and play team pool with a Pro host?

How about identifying the top 128 10ball players on the planet, get them together for a once a year world championship tournament, and each of them in their first round plays a player that paid enough money to buy the rights to play their favorite player....single elimination, race to 21, 3 hour time limit, 10 game lead early win by knockout.... all money raised goes to charity, and if the challenger wins, they get to play in the world championship tournament instead of the Pro they beat! Even if they don't get the player they wanted, they still bought in so they'll get to play against who ever is left without an opponent for their exibition match.

Just rich joe schmoes playing the top players?

Celebrities, sports or otherwise, that would pull.

That's because the players that have dragged this game down to shorter races, alternating breaks, break boxes, and all the rest of the bs rules knows they don't stand a chance and therefore wouldn't bother wasting a penny to play against the pros in this format.

The old days are gone. But everything evolves, that's nothing strange.

I have no interest in competing now, and I don't much enjoy watching. I just like casual social play. Rarely do I feel the need to get serious about it, and that's just when some yahoo pisses me off.

So I guess I am not contributing much these days. But I am here, and I enjoy talking about pool. These days I am more about cues, I just enjoy that aspect of it most.

What we have here is a parlor game for gentlemen that became a gambling game played mostly in smokey pool halls where no respectable woman would be seen for a long time.

We got a shot in the arm with The Hustler. Then that faded. Then we got a shot in the arm with TCOM. Then that faded.

There was a time where you would see some pool matches, often exhibitions, on network TV. That was when we had three channels (if you were lucky) and rabbit ears with tin foil on them.

Then there was cable and ESPN of course. Little surges and attempts at making something happen mixed with controversy.

Then there was internet and streaming with little surges at making something happen again mixed with controversy.

All of a sudden TCOM is antiquated, George and Gus are long gone, Saunier Wilhelm is long gone, Brunswick tables have given way to Diamond, people pay thousands for Asian made pool cues, and cutting edge pool cues aren't even made of wood. And as you mentioned...the rules and various schemes...

It's a different world.

But certain things have not changed. Pool is still a parlor game that became a gambling game played mostly in places that serve alcohol. That's what the general picture of pool is in the minds of the masses. And in fact, that's what it is. The lights and cameras, the tuxedos, the polo shirts, the movies...none of that has changed what the game is at the core.

IMHO: What does pool need? It needs to be pool. It needs to be what it is. I don't think it needs anybody to try to force it to be something else. It isn't golf, it isn't tennis, it isn't poker. and it sure as hell ain't the NFL. MMA, or NASCAR.

Capitalize on what it is without trying to make it something else, that's what a creative mind will do.

I love the game and I am proud to be a part of it in whatever capacity I have been over the years.

(Obviously I've 'snipped' out some of your post.)
I think you're right on the money with your observations.
It's a wonderful game, as we all believe, but it is still dominated by low-lifes, creeps, and various other criminal types. All one has to do is to read some of the books written by some of the old time heroes of the game......and there it is somewhere: "I, (he), (she), had to use a gun or a baseball bat or a knife to get the money....or "somebody got jarred"...or "who do you air barrel", "the table got altered overnight".... on and on it goes.
There is a scene in the old movie "Hustler" where Paul Newman gets mad at Piper Laurie about something and slaps her............she looks at him with contempt and utters the memorable, profound, line: "You Bum, you Pool Room Bum".

Sad, but accurate.....and a genuine shame.
Keep on truckin'

So...... when and why do and others think this happened to Billiards?
1880's? 1920's? 1950's 1970's 1990's ????'s
and why did it happen?

My grandfather used to ask a question that I think is very germane to this discussion.

If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?

YOU haven't been able to monetize your world class table skills, your pool hall you had in 1989 that you like telling us about, designing the best table made, and developing a revolutionary leveling system into financial security.

So why would anyone take business advice from you?

Basically as soon as billiards was allowed to be played in public rooms, it became just another game (among many) for the boys to wager on or otherwise earn bragging rights from. Been going on for easily 400+ years. In other words, as far as we are concerned, "its always been that way".

And, unlike golf for example, the fact that its an indoor game places it naturally in places where men go to amuse themselves and drink = bars.

As Chopdoc wisely pointed out: it is what it is, and that's ok.

On the other hand, there's also no reason under the sun that professional play cannot be reorganized and turned into something worthy of respect and honor.
It's just not happening at the moment.

We need the colour of money sequel.

Honestly don't you think that and The Hustler did the game much more harm than good?

What you need is somehow to do a Cool Running type movie about pool (I don't mean from an ethnicity standpoint but from a comes-from-outside standpoint).

Speaking of the color of money...why didn't the pros involved with the movie say that a pro would never play position for a bank shot like Vince did when he threw the game to Eddie...and btw the color of money started the pool craze in the 90's.

Who cares about being rich, you can't take any of your riches with you when you die. Everyone you wouldn't loan a dime to, like your family members, while you were living, get it all for free after you're dead anyway...LOL Think about it, all your life you chase the dream of being rich, then if you're sucessful, spend the rest of your life protecting your nice little nest egg, not enjoying spending it....then when you die, everything you saved gets spent anyway....just not by you...LMAO.....i enjoy my life, I'm free to do what ever i want to do, go where i want, have friends all over the country, and have no responsibilities or obligations to anyone, and get up in the morning as well as go to sleep when ever i want.....you can't buy that life style with ALL the riches you have to your name buddy!

It came out in 1986.
