Hello all,

I am looking to have a John Davis blank converted. I have been checking out schuler cues to do the work, and was wondering any opinions/ problems with the joint or cues in general. I did some research and saw one person's joint pin stripped right out. I am mainly looking to make sure that this is not a common occurance. I will not be getting inlays, so no stories about those.

Please let me know any experiences you have had with schulers during repairs, etc..

PM me if you don't want to post.

Thanx very much,
Ian

I have had two Schulers so far and the joint hasn't had any problems. It is simply amazing.

On many occations I've seen the shaft stuck on the butt & 2 people twisting the Q to get them apart. I personally saw this once & it resulted in a broken Q. I personally don't like the joint. There is a friction fit between the aluminum bushing in the shaft & the wood in the joint end of the butt. It doesn't take much dirt or swelling of the wood to creat a VERY tight joint...JER

I've found that if you tonk a cue and get it flexing like a tuning fork and quickly turn the shaft before it stops shaking it releases real easy...

Ray Schuler is dead.
He did make some very nice cues and they are still available But I doubt very strongly he is doing any cue work.

So is J.M. Brunswick. But the company he founded still
makes pool tables, indirectly.

On occasion I've had people bring me a cue that for whatever reason had locked-up. The method that I use is to lay the cue horizontally across my knee and with slight & equal down pressure on both the shaft & handle gently roll the cue across my leg. This flexes the cue at the joint and will open the shaft/handle mating surfaces allowing the cue to now be broken down. I have never had an instance where this method did not work.
Leave the channel locks in the toolbox. This is no joke. I've also had people bring me their cue after they've tried the channel lock method and they aren't pretty. They are usually dumbfounded when they see how easily the cue comes apart when using my method. Yeah, I get the repair job but it's not one that I want because it should have never happened it the first place.

are you seriously posting this? DUH.

I said Schuler cues, not Ray Schuler. His apprentices are still producing cues using all the same methods Ray did, as Schuler legacy cues.

Seriously, I thought about going to mr balabushka and mr rambow first...but they won't return my calls....WIERD!

this thread reminds me of some adds I've seen..."signed by Ray Schuler before his death"...

not to take anything away from Shuler cues who do good work, but with this blank i would go to someone more well know for this work and let's say more well known traditionalists like Jerry Rauenzahn, Tim Scruggs ect.....

skins ------------- would go to Keith Josey but then again you already knew that :)

The shuler shop makes first rate cues, I have had many fantastic schulers.
But, If Joel herceck was to finish a davis blank, that would give you cue supremacy bragging rights for eternity!

The cue is going to be a herman rambow tribute cue so I figured who better to make the cue than his apprentice's shop team, who also specializes in authentification of Rambows.
