Extra shaft - actual use ?

I have never used my second shaft on my current cue. Had the cue for about a year. Nice to have in case the tip comes off or something. This is the only reason I used the second shaft on my last playing cue.

I do occasionally . . .

But's it mainly there in case something happens to #1. I've only had to fall back on it once - a layer de-laminated on my tip. I honestly can't tell the difference between #1 and #2 feel wise, but #2 stays clean so it never hard to tell which is which.

One thing for sure though is that I'd never buy another cue without having at least two shafts for it.

Lol

I've yet to use the second (backup) shaft. Better to have and not need, versus need and not have, though.

The peace of mind alone is worth it...

How many of you have actually used their spare shafts ?

I will give you my opinion on this subject, the extra shaft should be used on a regular basis. I alternate my shafts daily so that if I have a tip problem I can switch to the shaft that I am currently not using and it is as comfortable as the shaft with the bad tip.

If you do not do this and the second shaft and tip are never broken in, you will have problems in a high pressure situation if you have to change shafts, and it can cost you the Game, and the Set!~!!!!!:)

Great Idea...

I think I will do this, I always used one shaft on my cue to keep the extra one clean just in case I need to sell my playing cue, since I will NEVER EVER EVER sell my playing cue, might as well use the second shaft.

To add.. I just checked my second shaft and the tip radious are way different.

On my previous shaft, I used mine once the original got a little thin.

On my current shafts, I've not had to use them at all.

I never thought about it, but that sounds like a really smart idea, Craig. I'll try it.

Not that this motion needs a seconding...

FWIW - this was exactly the conventional wisdom back when I got
my first cue, a few decades ago.

I agree with Manwon. Ive done that for a year or so now. I've had to switch a couple times. Someone knocked my cue over and gave it a pretty good ding close to the ferrule once and I switched over then till I could get home and fix it.

Extra shaft -no
original shaft-no

I never use mine nor do i use the original.I have about 15 to 20 cues ,about 5 different 314 shafts that probably fit 10 of my cues.

Along time ago i went through my game and really work on the things that gave me trouble, and one of things i hated the most was trying to guess
how much deflection i was going to get on any given shot.
And to top that off all cues deflected a little different.
Then the 314 came along and really help me fine tune the aiming line.
It took alot of guess work out of making the shot.
(deflection is bad).
Im not against the cues original shaft or anybody that uses them.
Sorry im not trying to send this post in a different direction.

I'm with Craig...my last two players (19 years between them) had two shafts. I always alternated them, but usually every month or two. I keep my tips manicured the same, but as one gets slightly thinner, I switch to the other, then switch back, etc. Keeps me proficient with either shaft, spreads the wear between them, and like a violin, wood just does better in the long run when it's routinely exposed to the oils and heat of your hands. I've had shafts go bad just sitting in a case for a few years, but never while under frequent use.

2nd shaft has to be equal to your playing-shaft. If something happens there should be no reason to have negative thoughts to use it :)

I have different tips on my shafts. Hard and soft. I use the soft tip on heavy bar box cue balls so I can get some draw.

I have never used the second shaft, when I sell or trade a cue the buyer has a new shaft and like new cue, helps with the sale.My playing cue,the South West in my avitar, easily found a new home last weekend at the Derby.

See that Craig guy, more than just a pretty face.
He does know what he's talking about 99% of the time.
I left out 1% because no ones perfect.

I use my extra regularly. I mark them to know the difference. IMO, it is also a great way to test drive a new tip...

IMO, a main player needs two shafts. An extra cue is ok with just one. Extra cues won't be in a serious match!

That sure was a nice cue!
