Does your eye dominance in aiming affect any other aspect of your life?
Is it the same for bowling? archery? golf? How about aiming (steering a car)?

Just curious; if it is such a dominate condition for aiming in pool, why wouldn't it affect other areas of your life?

Comments please? and, what, if anything, do you do to correct for eye dominance for other aspects of your life?

dominant eye

I lost a girlfriend once when i wasnt keeping a eye ,i mean dominant eye on her.It really effected me for a while.

I know when I was in the Marines, we had to find our dominate eye so we would know to shoot right or left handed. It was surprising that so many people had no idea which eye was dominant. As for other things like driving, and other activities, Id have to say it does affect them as well, just not easily noticed. Just my opinion.

since i started a very similar thread on this subject, i play pool right handed and have very strong left eye tendancies. i also am ambidextrous in many activities(baseball, working with hand/power tools, writing, etc) i feel that most everyday activities dont require the level of accuracy that pool, bowling, shooting sports do. unless you are tony stewart trying to slide your car into a gap at 200mph i would say that general driving doesnt fit this catagory either. i personally am struggling to find the proper alignment of my eyes/head when shooting pool. i almost have to feel as if i am purposely turning my head to the right so that left eye is more in line to have sucess. but who knows i could be full of it, imho

If your head is positioned properly, it doesn't matter which eye is dominant. Get your head right, and your brain will figure it all out for you. Conversley, if you know which eye is dominant, but don't know how to position your head above the cue, you still aren't seeing it.

The point is, concentrate on what is important. Proper alignment of all parts of the body will allow you to see and deliver the cue ball where it needs to go.

You can find two Left Eye Dom/right handed shooters, and each may very well need to have their head positioned differently to see the line. Eye-D in and of itself, is of little consequence. Getting your head in the right position for the individual, now that is pretty important.

As a former golf professional, playing and teaching, I will have to partially disagree with this. You dont use both eyes to see. There are a few people in the world that actually see with both eyes. Not saying you dont have vision out of both, but your brain only sees with one. That being your dominant eye. The non-dominant eye is used mainly for depth perseption and peripheral vision. You need to have your dominant eye looking down the shaft. If not, you will be the slightest amount off. Might not be much, but you will be off a little. There are some easy ways to find out which eye is dominant. I am sure someone has provided a good way of doing so.

For those of you that may doubt this, try this. Go to Walgreens, CVS or another drugstore and buy an eyepatch. Put it on and get into your car and drive. You wont go 10ft. before you say to yourself this is f'ed up. Why? 0 Depth perception. Anyway, good luck to you on your quest for knowledge.

Also, if it doesnt matter, then why put one eye behind the barrel of the gun? It is the exact same thing. The best way to see an exact line to any object is to put you eye on that line.

Dont think that would be a good article to go on as it is a sport that has nothing to do with alignment and non-moving targets.

Just read the Bob Fancher article.....there is plenty of research on eye dominance in Medline or Pubmed, a couple of thousand articles to be exact....just one for example: A new interocular suppression technique for measuring sensory eye dominance.

Each eye supplies information to the brain differently. The dominant eye is used to fixate on objects. If you look at a point, the fixation of the dominant eye will fall on the center of the point while the non-dominant eye will fall slightly off-center. By comparing the difference between the images supplied by each eye the brain is able calculate depth information in a scene. The degree to which any eye is dominant varies from person to person as well.

In scenarios where estimating depth is important, the functioning of both eyes in tandem is vital. I don't recommend skiing with an eyepatch any more than driving. However, in scenarios where determining a straight line between two points is needed, using the dominant eye confers an advantage over using both eyes. When shooting a gun, you want to align the sight of the gun with a target. If you kept both eyes open while sighting down the barrel of the gun, when you looked at the sight you would see two targets, and when you focused on the target you would see two sights. In this scenario, the depth information your brain is supplying you is not helpful in aligning the target and sight, and it is easier to sight with one eye.

Pool is an interesting scenario in that it requires good depth perception to estimate the line of sight, generally done while standing up, and in addition requires accurately lining up the cue ball with the contact point on the object ball. If you adopt a high stance and hold the cue under both eyes, you have the best depth judgment, which is needed to estimate the speed and direction of the hit. If you adopt a low stance and use your dominant eye, you have the best ability to line up the cueball and object ball. Most people go somewhere in between, where they can line up the balls while still having a general view of the table to guide the speed of their stroke.

This seems to come into play in the nature of various cue games. In three-cushion billiards players generally adopt a more erect stance that provides a good, continuous 3-d view of the table, allowing them to accurately predict the reaction of the balls. In snooker, the accuracy requirement that smaller balls present requires players to adopt a low stance sighting down the cue. In this game moreso than in billiards, players must first estimate what will happen on the shot and determine the line of sight, then remember the layout of the table when they are down on the shot since they don't have a good view of the balls.

So with ppl with an eye dominance that is affecting the aim, the correction is to position your head over the cue so that you are using both eyes?
Isn't that what everyone does?

If you are left eye dominate do you make sure your left eye is directly over the cue to line up the shot? Does that solve your problem? do you make all your shots? or just make more than you would if you positioned your head over the cue using both eyes?

Do you correct this problem with the other aiming sports the same way?
Are the results the same. You have an increase in accuracy but still not perfect?

Marty Feildman was both but then again he was always looking at 2 different things anyway
 
Just to throw my 2 pennies in...

I began to shoot much better when I learned how to sight with my dominate eye.

Semper Fi Joe!

Dominant eye had a big effect on my pistol shooting until I got used to it. jcurry was just telling me that he is able to shave his right leg better than his left because of his dominant eye.

Your eyes are trying to do what they should do naturally. With PERFECT AIM this is what I teach. Sometimes we have to override the dominent eye to see the shots correctly and on other shots we just need to let them both do what they naturally do . Perfect AIM takes all the guess work out of it. I'm getting sick of this #@$%^! infomercial.

I guess I'm one of the lucky, yet unlucky ones that doesn't have an issue with dominant eye problems. I was born with a defective right eye, so the vision in that eye is so impaired, the image barely reports to the brain - let's just say my good eye can get to the second last row of the eye chart - the bad one makes it to the second from the top. I HAVE to align with my dominant eye, otherwise everything seems crooked. Now, there's a drawback in real life. I have no peripheral vision on my right side, so that is definitely the side to sucker punch me from. It doesn't affect my day-to-day activities, however. I used to do archery when I was younger, and had no problems hitting targets with my bow or someone else's.
