Albin is playing awesomely.

And he is a very promising world-class player. He is essentially playing at the same level as Jeffrey Ignacio and John Morra, who are also promising world-class players.

It is what it is...

Your right it is what it is ,, and some players just have a little xtra gear they hit when playing in big events that don't bare out in the numbers ,,

Some days I might play like a 600 some days I might play like a 400. I know this after 4400 games I play like a 506. Consistency is what keeps me from being higher

I am not rated on my high gear, nor am I rated on my low gear.

When you have watched the numbers like I have and the matches. The numbers just make sense.

Good effort but that chart doesn't pass the smell test. How could Lo Li Wen be above Darren Appleton? Maybe players' performance are not sufficiently transitive.

Yes they make sence in figuring out a predicted outcome on average however the numbers are taken from a wide spectrum performances to create a average ,, for instance some players might play a certain level in the first few rounds of a tourney and can easily get knocked out early but if they manage to survive thru that they start hitting gear and then become a serious threat to win the Tournoment ,, there's the consistent player who always plays about the same speed and then thiers the streak player who can play way above his consistent ability ,, Hall would be a prime example of this , when he catches gear he's a monster player

I would considerd Mikes ratings more reliable than the official world ranking tbh. It's rated over many more tournaments and games. The WPA rankings are quite a small sample size.

Really well I wouldn't Mike playing in Joss tour events and bar box events are hardly the same as world championship events ,I don't think mike has a prayer in hell of winning a world championship

Fantastic concept Mike!

Any plans of creating categories for 8,9 & 10ball, 14.1, 1-pocket, UK Pool or Snooker.

There are tens of thousands of active UK Pool players playing leagues and tournaments who would love to have a rating system.

Indeed. The WPA rankings are a joke, calculated over only 14 events and they don't seem to be continuous, simply resetting after every tourney year, unlike golf and tennis.

Not to say that the international players aren't elite, they get to play on easier equipment more often(ie. China Open).

The big surprise for me is Thorsten Hohman so low. How does Dechaine rank higher? I'm not surprised Alex is so low. He doesn't play that often, but Toasty plays and wins all the time.

Great rivalry between Hohmann and Dechaine. In 2014 Mike eliminated Hohmann at the US Open 9-ball and also at Turning Stone. Thorsten beat him in the Canada event. They played twice at the 2015 Super Billiards Expo and split the two matches, but Mike eliminated Thorsten. I might rank Hohmann a bit higher than Mike, but it's pretty darn close if you look at their head to head results.

The telling stat is just four Americans in the top thirty five (SVB, Archer, Dechaine, Morris). Archer's inclusion is a shocker to me, as he's had few, if any, good results in the either 2014 or 2015 in major events.

Finally, Appleton ranked way too low.

Here are world top 35 BEFORE Dynamic Austria Open, which we will get in in the next day or so. Players must have played 300 games to be on this list. A few players with 200+ games who might get on this list soon are Ching-Shun Yang and Sean Cheng of TWN, Bing Jie Chu of CHN, and Joven Alba of PHI.

Great stuff. It is high time that a rating system like this is implemented in pool
I don't know the algo used so I have couple of questions :
1) If a player with 500 beats a player with 700, does the 500 player get a biggest increase in rating than if the 700 player beats the 500 player?

2) Hypothetical question-
For eg. the undefeated district champion player A in tiny island of Nauru thrashes everyone (who are all D or E or F players) in his district and is Fargo rated 950 highest in world but his true speed is around 550
If Player A only plays in his district against minnows and does not travel overseas cos too troublesome (and he has fear of flying) :) and there is not a chance that any high rated will travel all way to Nauru to take him down.
Does that mean Player A will remain highest Fargo rated in world?

:D

The Mike I was referring to was Mike Page who is the man behind these Fargo ratings. Not Mike Dechaine. But since you're clearly only interested in ranting against Mike Dechaine, and not a really worthwhile discussion of rankings or rating systems then please carry on. My bad.

Yes. In fact if the 500 gets past 3 in a race to 12, the 500 will go up and the 700 will go down

The District Champion in Nauru does not need ever to play a high rated player. Even though he thrashes everybody his rating will still be at 550.
This is because some fraction of the D, E, or F players he thrashes will have traveled to New Zealand or Australia and gotten thrashed by a bigger degree by 650's or to a similar degree by 550s or will play even with 350s. It doesn't take much for seemingly insular groups to get coupled to the rest of the world.

To set the record straight I didn't say anyone was using averages. I personally do not know the math behind the calculations.

I like this rating system. Since I am currently a 547 I can try for 600 or 700 eventually. Its a good way to see where you stand among everyone else.

You can look up Player Ratings and more here: [edited] * Not sure they want this public.... beta testing phase perhaps.

Thanks . Similar to ELO :)

Will it be possible to see which events have been included in general and for a specific player?
