Fast Eddie

Most any road player that came through Sacramento in the 70s and for many years since has run into Fast Eddie. I'm talking about Eddie Clark. He played at the Jointed Cue during the days of the old tournaments. In the 70s he co-owned Family Billiards with his friend Gene Ahola.

Eddie was my close friend also during that time and since. We learned to play pool, cards and just generally gamble together. We made many short and long road trips.

We went in the service together and were in the same training company, and ultimately the same Southeast Asian country. We even managed to get together while we were there, but thats another story.

He was also a very accomplished card player. We've played since we were teens. He was well know in Vegas and he made it to the last table of the WSOP seniors recently. He could toss a coin to a line or the wall, flip it and call it every time and he knew hundreds of other hustles and gafs.

Eddie was also a charismatic storyteller. Thats what made him such a good hustler. He could charm you into anything, and then you were broke. It was his way.

Saturday night the 4th of January, actually Sunday morning, he collapsed at the Jointed Cue while playing $100.00 a game 1P with a road player. I was backing him, just like old times. He never woke up and they pulled the plug a couple of days later. His last words were "take care of my cue"

It was a shocking loss to everyone that knew him.

Here is his Obit., from the newspaper, simple, no BS and couldn't be more accurate.

CLARK, Edward Raymond
(Fast Eddy)
Feb. 6, 1948 - Jan. 7, 2009

He will be missed.

Eddie was sweating my game at Hard Times with the same player he was matched up with later on. You can't think of the Jointed Cue in Sacramento without thinking of Eddie Clark, a longtime player there who was tough to beat. RIP Eddie

Also sorry to hear that. I knew him about ten years ago, he was a good guy.

I didn't know Eddie well, but he was a good guy to be around. Always had interesting stories to tell, and the inside scoop on the local pool scene.

Deadon,
Fantastic (and accurate) testimonial to Eddie. Shocking indeed. The Jointed Cue is a different place these days. It is wierd to loose someone you see everyday. Fortunatly, this is one of my first expirieces with this. My sincere condolences to you as I know how close you two were.

He's playing Bart Mahoney, another good One Pocket player, who teaches pool at some local high schools I believe.

Yup they were playing $40 a game 1pkt Eddie won $160 off of Bart.

Sorry to hear of Fast Eddie's passing. I didn't know the man but I can tell he'll be missed by those who did.
The guy's who will jump up and play for a few $$, are becoming a truly dying breed. (no pun intended) RIP Eddie.

Hi Jay,
Yeah that's me gettin a lesson from Eddie. I will miss him as a person and a sparring partner.

The day before he passed, five days after these photos, I had a chance to thank him for beating up on me. We always laughed about how I would lose a little to him and it would not be long before I'd get it all back (and sometimes more) from another player.

I even mentioned this at his memorial and it broke the ice, in how I was a "Runner" for the Clark family cause.

It ain't the same without him, but this will unfortunately become more and more common as time passes.

Say hi to my friends in So. Cal.

Bart
