Favorite Joint Material, on a Cue, and Why

What is you favorite, and why?
I have been playing with an ivory joint and now a phenolic joint since I had my first Martin cue. I remember being the only one in the pool room with anything but a steel joint cue for years.

Mine

1st choice Solid piloted Stainless Steel because it is durable, looks good and plays good.

2nd choice Solid piloted Ivory joint because it looks good and plays good.

3rd choice Flat faced phenolic joint.

I have no real reason maybe other than looks but I really dislike cues with the sleeved on type of steel, ivory or phenolic joints.

In addition I also really hate the looks of the deer antler, stag or other horn material that make the cue look like the joint has sanding dust finished within the joint material. It makes the joint and or butt cap look dirty. I hate dirty.

Why waste it on a cue?

Why would you put joint material on a cue??? roll it and smoke it, sheesh.

On topic, I "thought" that I would much rather play with a non-metal joint (as in my Samsara) but after my Joss got fixed up, I really don't have much of a prefference. The hit feel is different but still a "good" hit. In fact, after playing with the piloted metal joint, going back to the Samsara felt a bit weird.

ivory, or phenolic the synthetic ivory i've tried seemed to soften the hit too much and the ss joints seem to take a lot of the feel away.

Forgot to mention Wood to Wood.

I have a confession to make. My main playing cue has an ivory joint, actually a shorter-than-normal wood to wood joint with an ivory collar. I also like SS joints. However, from a hit and playability standpoint, I honestly think that nothing matches a wood to wood joint with a large pin and a phenolic collar.

I have also espoused ivory ferrules, but after comparing about 15 cues I'm changing my preferrence. I think LBM hits the best.

It's all relative to the shaft taper, the tip itself, the ferrule, and even the woods, but I'm calling Jeff Olney right now to tell him that his standard equipment has the best hit. That is, a wood to wood joint with a 3/8 X 10 pin and a phenolic collar, with a LBM ferrule and a Moori Medium. I also tried the same combo with an ivory ferrule and old growth wood. His standard LBM ferrule outplayed it IMHO...Tom

I have always

liked Stainless Steel joints. The afterwards backward feel after hitting the cue ball just balances with the forward hit stroke somehow. In other words, the back half matches the front half, in feel.

This is going to sound silly but I gotta go with a steel piloted joint. When I first started playing the cue I used had plastic joint collars. All the really good players in the room I played at had high end cues like Joss West, Richard Black, Paul Mottey, etc.... with those shiny steel joints. I don't know why but that steel joint really appealed to me.............as did the delrin butt cap. Steel joints and delrin butt caps are the ones for me.

Now that is a perfect example of personal opinion and preference in cue materials, and joints in particular. I have a JossWest with a SS piloted joint. I bought it 25+ years ago. Bill Stroud has maintained it and it still plays great, but I now prefer wood to wood with a phenolic collar or something similar. Large pins like 3/8 X 10, 3/8 X 11, Radials etc. also really help the playability too IMHO.

Back in the day by the way, the really high end cues had ivory joints and ferrules. The SS joints were the entry level cues...Tom

3/8x11 pin or any large pin, flat-faced, wood to wood with linen-fiber collar: more "feel/feedback" without the dead-weight caused by SS

Ivory

1). Flat faced ivory with a radial pin - nothing feels better to me

2). Piloted SS - my first good cue was a Schon with Piloted SS joint so this hit formed the basis of my "feel" as a pool player

3). Wood to wood great feedback on my Scruggs sneakies.

Something Like this, we now use a white phenolic with a wood to wood pilot, any big pin really, we use most.

To answer question: White Phenolic like: Ivorine is my favorite, using some moose, and stag horn on afew cues that should be done soon and some Ivory joints as well.

Go ahead Joeyincali, do it, ask

White Phenolic? does it exist?

Until a better name comes out, white phenolic it is.

I never considered Gary Spaeth's Joss West as entry level. hehe!!

Used to have a stainless steel jointed cue. Also had a brass jointed cue. Nice enough.

THEN, I had a cue with a wood to phenolic joint. WOW!

NOW, my fav for playing the game is a wood to wood joint, although I do like the wood to phenolic joint best for breaking with. I think it's due to more of a mental opinion than a hit difference, though.

I Prefer The Piloted SS joint, the hit and delivery of the cue is so much smoother. its almost like the cue is on Auto Pilot in my opinion!

And i have played with all of the others, which dont have the same type of feel to me.
