Fed Ex Shipping Costs!!!!!!!!!

Personally I ship fedex alot because of my employee discount and because I know that fedex overall is the fastest and most reliable shipper out there today. With ehat being said though I still use the post office on occassion for shipping smaller Items.

Did you include the dimensions of your package? Both FedEx and UPS both use dimensional weight to determine the charges for air freight. It always goes up when you put in the package size.

Ship 70lbs have a box made at Kinkos- 250. shipping

I have a commercial account Fed Ex- there is a bit of a break-But the length and weight are killers. Office supply sells tubes for 5.00- reusable with locking caps- the bubble wrap etc. sometimes its better to drive and make a trip, and hand deliver to customer!! Mark

Hey Black Balled, If they had quoted me prices like yours above I'd have shipped it in a minute. They did not, I asked for the cost of sending a Fed Ex tube box with less than 10 lbs, insured for $1000.00 overnight and was told $100.00 one way. It was my obligation to pick up shipping both ways so I asked if the $100.00 was for both ways and was told no, it will be $200.00. If they had told me the costs you are quoting we would not be seeing this thread. It was a ridiculous price to ship a butt section of a cue from Chicago to Colorado, and then the butt and one shaft back. There is a Fed Ex hub less than a mile from my house and I live less than 10 miles from O'Hare airport which is where they would be flying it out of. Funny thing is the last time I used Fed Ex I sent an envelope to my daughter's office that was supposed to be signed for and they just dropped it on the floor and left. It contained some important documents and I was pissed. They admitted they screwed that up and refunded me for that disaster. This last mess was the last for me, it must have become really difficult to deliver a box!!! It's not rocket science for christs sake.....

A few things to keep in mind.

Not all places that you think are UPS or Fedex, are UPS or Fedex. Many are independent stores that will charge you a premium over and above what the actual shipping charges are. I have received packages that were damaged and UPS or Fedex claims they were improperly packaged and would not pay the claim. This really sucks when you pay that independent store to do the packaging, and they won't take responsibility.

The triangle boxes from UPS and Fedex are very good boxes, but the ones from USPS are a far cry from good boxes. They will absolutely need some extra protection like the pcv tube inside.

USPS claims are a nightmare! I won't even insure anything with them anymore. I use a third party postage and insurance provider just because of that.

Priority Mail does not have tracking. It's actually called Delivery Confirmation, and it usually doesn't show until the next day. If they did have tracking, I would ship USPS.

UPS will automatically deny all claims. Usually it's because of Insufficient Packaging or Padding. When you push the issue, they will "submit for an exception" and it will then pay. Be prepared to ask for a supervisor!

Pool cues are tough for the conveyor systems because they are long and narrow. They get caught on the sides of the conveyor systems and basically become a "Dam" with all the other packages piling up behind them until something gives.

Most "High End" cuemakers and cue sellers use Fedex. The reason is that Fedex Air is a totally separate system than ground and they feel the cues are safer with fewer packages going through the same system. They always overnight the expensive stuff.

I tried to get a Fedex salesman to come by my business and give me a quote for over 2 months. I can git a golf ball to one of their facilities, and they would not send someone to talk to me unless I already had an account. This was Stupid! I use UPS instead. I really only have a handful of claims a year even though we ship quite a bit.

Both UPS and Fedex are really expensive for anything out of the US. I almost always use USPS, but the insurance thing is a pain. I use a third party for this.

Always us USPS to ship to Canada. The USPS gets a pass due to NAFTA and it doesn't have to go through a brokerage or something. I have seen a $50 brokerage fee on a $5 item when shipped with UPS.

Anyway, that's just a few things I have learned over the last few years about shipping pool cues around.

I hope it helps!

The real kicker is when you see the Fed Ex truck pull up to the back of the post office. That's right many fed ex packages are actually sent on usps planes.:scratchhead:

cheaper to drive back & forth???
post office, insert cue inside pvc pipe;),
then inside thier triangular box

That's how I ship em as well. Including cost of abs pipe, caps, insurance for $2000 and priority shipping it was $40.

Never use kinkos. Sign up for a fedex account and print the labbel out yourself. Then just drop it off at a kinkos. Its much cheaper. I work for fedex which owns kinkos, but i'll tell you kinkos is a rip off because of the fees they charge. I personally think kinkos hurts our company more that helps it by driving customers away because of their prices.

I did...36x4x4 @ 5lb.

On my way home last night I stumbled upon this, the driver had minor injuries, went around a turn really slow and flipped. They had 2 big rigs pull it back over upright, hopefully no cues were harmed. :p

P.S. Cost will be going up even more now.

WOW I guess you truly know what I thought about Fed Ex then, obviously they are one in the same!!

This isn't totally correct. FedEx and USPS have an agreement called SmartPost. This is why you see the trucks at the post office but this is strictly ground service. FedEx will deliver bags of boxes to the post office that do not require a timely shipment or its a rural area that is easier for USPS to deliver than FedEx. The boxes have both a FedEx barcode and a USPS barcode. In return, FedEx planes carry USPS packages to certain geographical areas that FedEx can get there quicker than USPS can. There's a lot more to the agreement they signed a few years back. Kind of like UPS will carry the International shipments for DHL to the U.S. since the German Post found out they couldn't do a shipping takeover in the U.S.

Actually this truck is not owned by FedEx but rather a contractor. So the only cost going up is his insurance!
