Ferrule hardness: What I have so far...

You might have thought about this, but just in case: Hardness might show a gradient over the length of the ferrule. I suggest you measure it at different points and take the average.

I'd only believe the results if they were done on a rockwell. J/k, can't wait to see the results. My guess is ivory's the hardest, but will crack before it can be proven.

Some people I know prefer cueball ferrules.
I've played with CB ferrules and kind of liked the hit.
A fer months ago I switched cues, and went from ivory ferrules to melamine, and a harder tip.
The combination works quite well.
I haven't tried everything, but Elforyn doesn't seem to be a good ferrule material.

When in doubt go with a ferrulless shaft.

I didnt put ivory on there because I dont think the durometer is capapable of providing accurate readings from material that porous.

Just curious about results....

Chris,

I was just curious how your results turned out. I am interested in your test and very interested in how the different materials compare in hardness.

Thanks,

dakota

Testing hasnt been done yet. Im looking to see if there are any ferrules that I havent got on the list. Can you think of any?

Believe it or not, ferrules had to be sent to Germany for testing. Couldn't find anyone here with the proper test equipment. Should have the results in a few weeks.

I have a durometer for leather tips...They are more porous than ivory for sure. I use it to keep customers happy when putting on tips. I keep the same hardness for a specific customer.

I love elforyn for ferrules, but if you like melanine and a hard tip as the hit, elforyn is not for you. Elforyn gives a much softer hit.

Too Late for Mason's Micarta and others?

Although it seems to be too late to add to the list I would also like to see "Mason's Micarta" tested. And just in case it's not too late, here are other materials below. But I imagine people in the know could rank these relative to the results you obtain just from experience and feel. I suppose buck horn might not be testable for the same reason as ivory?

Masons micarta is in the mix! I live that stuff!

Maple?

And another thought. What about testing maple? I have played with a couple "ferrule-less" shafts - and of course you have the OB shafts. Therefore, I think testing maple would be useful as a reference point. It wouldn't surprise me if some ferrule materials were actually softer than maple (could be wrong, I'm no expert).

Too late to add maple to the mix? Hard to test for the same reason as ivory?

I hate quoting myself, but how about Porper ferrules? Hey, if it's too late to be tested, at least I'm helping create the ultimate complete list of ferrule materials. And then there's also Gracio's walrus tusk.
