Finally got my first break-and-run to beat Dave Thomson 5-4

I know many of you here know Dave Thomson (I share your pain;) ), maybe through Accu-Stats or one of his other pool-related enterprises- I met him through Cuaba when I was in Bangkok a couple weeks ago, and now he's on Koh Samui for a week of R&R.

Dave has been kind enough to come to my house to give me some (much needed) lessons- he works for food, and the wife is a good cook, so it worked out nicely.

Dave is an excellent instructor, and you always know where you stand with him- hit it too soft, or too hard, or in any way tentatively, and, in no uncertain terms, you'll know you did something wrong- I quite like this style as it makes getting it right all the sweeter.

A-a-a-a-a-nyway, after the lesson, we played a short race to five- Dave had me 4-2 and could have closed out the set, but, being a frugal Scot, he likes to get his money's worth out of a game and is loathe to hit a simple 9-ball carom when it will rob him of six or seven shot possibilities (I didn't remind him that it wasn't necessary to put quarters in my table:D ).

After being gifted two games, I broke on the hill, sinking a ball, and, even though a couple of times my position play landed me on what Dave cryptically called "the Brad-side" (not sure where that came from...:p ) I actually managed to string eight fairly decent shots together and run out (this has been a real monkey on my back- I've come close, but never managed to do it- it was really in my head- I'm happy it's finally done).

Thanks for all the help, Dave- my game has improved immensely (mostly through my being able to read the table a bit, which I couldn't really do before)- I've been desperate for some instruction, and none is available locally on the island- my enthusiasm for the game has been renewed.:happydance:

Let me be the first to congratulate you on your fine achievement.

Sadly I can't remember my first break and run. I do however remember my first 2-pack. It's a pleasant memory.

Again congrats. I'm certain that your new confidence will bring many more break-and-runs in no time. :)

Elusive 9-pack?

Pagulayan can't even run a 9-pack, and he's an incredible player. I think many of us will be chasing that one for awhile. =P

I have Craft disease. Cant Remember A F$cking Thing but i remember my first in 8 Ball which came first on a bar table. The guy i was playing had to point it out-I hadnt realized it.

The 9 Ball I remember it cold, it was so long coming. I actually knew how many B & R's id had til my 30 something over a longer timespan than you probably think.

Brian,
Congrats on the break & run! I'm sure their will be many more.

I'm glad I introduced you to Dave, and I'm glad you got to play some in Samui. Say Hi to Dave for me if he's still there. He's a great guy, no matter what he says about me.

See you next month in Bangkok. I'll have a BE III for you and maybe a South West?

Travis Trotter should really learn from this guy's post and learn how to provide detailed descriptions of how he beat his dad 4-1 and also post pics...

First Time

this was your first break and run ever? or was it just your first against him?

Brian is a beginning player.

Now that he has had his first B&R, the game will become addictive.

It's a hurdle for beginners that really builds confidence.

BTW, David Thompson is the owner of Medium Pool, a publicity company within the billiards industry. He was in Thailand printing the new Accustats catalog.

Congrats on the break and run.

9 pack ?

The only 9 pack that is a reality for me is if we are talking about beer. :D

Keep it up!

Glad that you finally ran the rack to win! It gets under your skin once you do it, you can't wait to do it again.

I remember, way back in the stone age, closing out the first tournament I ever entered. Opponent broke dry and never shot again, I was hooked for life! Still remember that final eight ball going all the way down the length of the table and splitting the pocket, priceless!

I prefer Daves hamburgers over Mc Donalds or Burger King..but wait..isnt he dead.....oh wait....diff guy.....scratch that:eek:

That's funny, I mostly remember the 8's and 9's that I've hung up to knock myself out.

I've won a few here and there, but the memories of bad shots seem to linger a lot longer than the game winning shots.

I remember missing a 9 ball that was 4 inches from the pocket in the finals of a local 9 ball tourney 5 or 6 years ago. It still stings a little.

I do remember my first break and run. It was on a bar table in the student union at my school. I broke and everything was so wide open, 3 balls out 6 were hanging, my mom probably could have gotten out.

The game starts to become an obsession at that point. You will do what you have to make it happen again. (and again)

Yep- Dave came over a couple more times after that- he's good entertainment value.

I definitely want the BE III- I'm still looking for the right SW- I haven't found it yet, though.

I have December 1st-21st off, so I'll come up to BKK for sure.

Haven't heard from Dave the instructor, though- we had some rain and it might have scared him off from coming to the island.;)

Brian,
There is some kind of charity tournament at Ball In Hand, I think it starts the 16th? Several of the Philippine players are supposed to be there. Seems like Bustamante, Alcano, & Gomez?

Anyway, double check the dates. You should come up then. I'll play in it. You should too.
