What's your best resource for finding new employees? I'm dying here trying to find decent people and had a terrible experience with my last day manager.

Would love some ideas and tips!

Don't look for the unemployed, look for someone who's already working, then you can see what they look like, and act like...before you talk to them about working for you. Not everyone is happy with their current employer, but don't want to be unemployed while they look for other work...unless you make him/her a good offer.

I agree with Glen.

Find someone already in a management position somewhere. I don't know the cost, but the company I work for uses a recruiting company. The recruiter does all the searching for you and then recommends people based on your criteria. It's up to you to interview/hire.

I was plucked from my previous job in this way. At the time, I was not even looking to change jobs. I had put my resume on Monster and forgot about it.

Some of the recruiters are:
Superior, Kelly, Addecco

Good Luck,
Craig

We are a small operation with only one person working at a time. So we put a lot of trust in someone when we leave our business. We never hire a stranger off the street. Most often a new hire is a customer or a friend of our family. My son's are in their 20's and they have lots of friends. We always pick someone that we have known and interacted with for quite some time. My husband says "you can tell alot about a person by the way he/she plays pool". For example do they cheat, play on air, act a fool etc. or do they appear to have ethics, play like a gentleman, interact well with people and pay their debts. You really can tell alot about a person on the pooltable. I have many people ask for a job in my poolroom, and many times I hire someone other than the person asking because they aren't what I'm looking for. I also like to hire college kids, they seem to be a little sharper...
Good luck in your search.

Karen, I understand your problem very well, because over the years I have seen a number of rooms close due to employee's. I am completely convinced that no one who needs to support themselves can afford to work for minimum wage, unless it is limited part time.

What I did, was to find an older gentleman who was retired and loved to play pool. It took me around a year to find the right person, because the person also will needed to have patients with teenagers. I found this gentleman through the pool leagues who play from my room. If I were you this is where I would start looking.

Good luck!!!

I would also suggest looking for retired people...why not keep an eye out in your own room a regular and approach the person ....the hall in Chicagoland i used to shoot at paid $6.50 to $7.00 per hour BUT you could play free pool while working if you weren't busy..also an employee could come in any time and play free....

The owner of the local pool hall I play out of posts on Craig's list. He usually is able to hire immediatly, the problem, high turn over rate.

Also ...

Their are a lot of people on disability, but they can earn so much a month in addition to their disability. They would be good candidates also. Trades people that are only working part time, maybe due to slow season, might be candidates too.

And there are always players around that don't work, but play Pool a lot, and they like money.

Of course, all would have to love Pool.

You will get the best employees, from other emloyees' (good employee) referrals.

Find someone who loves the game and needs table time,i ran a poolhall M-F til close for a year because i wanted to get better and loved the game.I was bringing in on a goodnight about $800,when i left the room it closed down a year after, the new guy who was working there was only making $300 or so,less then half of what i brought in.You need to find a guy who loves the game, people friendly, and somewhat sane which is hard to do in the pool world. If you do find someone good then make sure to take care of them and treat them good because good help is hard to come by.
