First and second place?

So, just totally hypothetically speaking here, if I played in a 9-ball tournament where the top two places paid $110 and $55, and I came in second in the tournament, and then I matched up even with the guy who came in first and won $100 from him, which he paid out of the same bills that were given to him as his prize money...

Did I pretty much just win first and second place? Hypothetically speaking, of course?

Sorry, pretty much just started this thread to brag.

a perfect example of the difference between 'tournament' players vs. 'money' players, and the mindset some players will have because they did good in a tournament, but not as well for the CASH!!!

He probably 'automatically' thought he would win the money game because he placed above you in the tournament.
 
Even hypothetically, you still lost in the finals. You're second. And what if you had lost to the guy gambling? Would you then have been in last place?

How about I went two and out. Then I matched up with the guy that won $120 for first in the tournament. I beat him out of $200. Do I care that I spent $10 on a tournament and didn't win.
 
I can't tell you the number of times I didn't play in a tourney just to wait out and clock them all. In the terms from "Good Time Charlie Brinson,"

"Hey, I can't eat no stinking trophy."

No, you technically "hustled" him. Let him beat you on the tournament and then you took the "candy" off his hands....:smile:

Story of my life Iba. I just cant seem to play good in tournements but ive got no problem taking the money off the hands of the guys who finished high in it. I think its a mental thing with me. but oh well, the moneys usually in matching up anyways though.

They always gamble on 234. $100 is about the most that ever changes hands, but there's usually at least one money game that occurs after the tournament ends.

Yeah, pretty much. I've done that before in this same tournament (gotten 2nd and lost my winnings right afterwards). It really stings the ego, but at least all I lose is my tourney entry fee.

A good ploy is to ask the other finalist if he'd like to play for all the money in the final- 1st and 2nd place cash. The downside is that few folks are willing to play all day and take a chance at going home with nothing.

Maybe you could have won $320 minus the $10 entry.

As badly as I play, if I beat someone they usually can't believe it and empty out. It's more likely if I won, I would have gotten the $120 and no one would have played me anyway. You've got to catch the guy with the biggest ego and play to it, I know you already know this game.
