Just wanting to clarify for my own info -

Is smoking banned in pool rooms in Florida?

If yes - then all parts of Florida?

Thanks

Dont know about all parts of Florida, The half dozen or so rooms I frequent in Tampa are all smoking rooms.

They did it here in iowa and bars are doing real bad. As much as i love it as a non smoker i hate the fact that bar owners are going broke.

Smoking permitted unless the room serves food and derives more than 10% of revenue from that food. There are other criteria, but generally do not apply to most rooms .

I'm with you, while I hate the government telling bar/restaurant/poolhall etc. owners what they can and cannot do; I love coming homing not smelling like a smokestack! A good number of bars still allow smoking, and get away with it, but I know which places ignore the ban, and can choose to go there or not.

I would think it'd be a thousand times easier to follow a ban in FL, where stepping outside to fire up is easier (no -30 degrees F windchills there). But I still hate the government dictating where smoking should and shouldn't be allowed.

It might seem easier to go outside but it would piss off a lot of people. It seems like 90% of the people down here in the pool rooms smoke especially on league nights!

FWIW, here in WA state, the issue of imposing a state-wide smoking ban was on the ballot as a referendum, which passed overwhelmingly (60/40-ish).

Point being... it was the people dictating... not the government... at least here.

Last time I checked, "60/40-ish" isn't "overwhelming", it's "majority". Overwhelming would be 90/10, or maybe 80/20. 60/40 is slightly more than half.

jimmyg's answer is correct, AFAIK. I'm not aware of any rooms who derive more than 10% of their income from food sales. All of the rooms I've been to allow smoking.

YES, pool halls in Florida suck because of smoking.

Corner Pocket on East Oakland Blvd has 4 heated Olhausen billiard tables, a few 9' Gold Crowns, and a few 8' Brunswicks. The room is non-smoking and has a small snack bar.

It's just not an action room, but great if you have a playing partner to go with. Has a great daytime special, like $7 per person until 6:00 PM. Also one of the housemen, Tom, is a well known excellent player that will play you if you haven't a partner, and also gives lessons. Great guy also.

Yeah, an dbased on the quality of play I see on league nights in our room most of the "players" are really just league smokers who want a social reason to stand around and catch cancer. :D

I think it's unreal that cigarettes are legal and even more ridiculous that they allow smoking inside anywhere!

Florida has a smoking ban in restaurants as part of the Indoor Clean Air Act
The smoking loop hole is based on the liquor license you hold. A SRX license (10% or less alcohol sales)is issued to places like Olive Garden, this is relatively a (full bar)free licence...no smoking (indoors) here.
A 4COP license(this also allows you to sell package) is the one you will see smoking and food being served indoors. This place is looked at as a Bar selling food and not a restaurant selling alcohol(49% or less food sales). This license will cost you from 250K-350K, they are sold like a piece of merchandise in Florida. The State of Florida only puts out a very limited number of licenses (by County) on a lottery basis, so if you want one, you'll have to buy it.
Pool rooms in general are exempt from from the Indoor Clean Air Act if they don't sell food. The typical High End Sports Bar / Pool Room here will have a 4COP licencse in Florida if they wish to allow smoking.

IMO, I am not a smoker, as a pool player smoking really doesn't bother me....(guess I have become immune)I would rather them eliminate or only allow the juke box as "background" music, some places are rediculous with the volume they play their music!

Atlantic Billiards in Royal Palm Beach Fl is a non-smoking room and business is good.

6 - Nine Foot Diamonds
A couple of Brunswicks
2 - bar boxes

Down with smoking and up with a clean healthy environment.

I think if they banned smoking in the room in FL that I might go into nicotine withdraws. I am kind of used to 2nd hand smoking about a pack and a half a night. If there is a tournament like at players in Mel. Then it would be three packs of 2nd hand smoke that gets me going. Yeah, and that God awful smell that you get when you first step in the shower and all that yuck starts to come off.
I find it weird that rooms and bars suffer because of a smoking ban. If they cant smoke in a pool room or restaurant, then they all just sit home and light up?

yea i'm pretty sure to the second hand smoke as well and that sucks, I feel as if I can't go anywhere after leaving the pool hall cause then my friends are getting 3rd hand smoke!

Smoking Bans

They placed smoking bans in Maine some 10 years ago. When they first did it the Pool rooms & bars were hurt bad. It seems things have made out ok now but a bunch ended up closing in the first year here. I myself smoke but will say the enviroment without smoking inside is much better and easier on the eyes. I do however not agree with these bans. As in Maine the educated idiots in the capitol are always screwing with something such as their excessive taxing of tobacco. What they don't realise is in the long run more people will quit giving the grand ole state less money from tax in the end. I think it should be up to the business owner if they want smoking allowed not some hipocrit in a suit & tie that don't even go out to these establishments but goes to church on sundays and drinks whiskey in their closet after. That is my 2 cents on the subject.

Yes ban all smoking in all public places.

I hate having to remove my clothes before my wife will allow me in the bedroom...wait, that didn't sound right...you know what I mean. Where I play is a big place and I still reek when I come home. I can't imagine what that's doing to my lungs.
