O.k. AZ,I'm sure most of you know Jimmy"flyboy"Spears .Well here's a funny thing I witnessed involving him..

A few years back,flyboy owned Bayou Billiards(Mugsy's back then) and every so often a road player would come to town, looking for action and naturally try to get a game with fly because it's no secret that when flyboy goes off...HE GOES OFF!!! like a rocket in outer-space!..Well anyway,late one night,in comes none other than Scott Frost and a couple of his flunkies/road buddies/stakehorses..After about 2 hours of Woofin' and B.S.'n between Scott and fly;a game was finally agreed upon :10 ahead 9ball on the Bar Box, fly was getting the 6 and the breaks!..for what amount you might ask. Well ,this is what I recalled.

Scott says" You just get your a$$ up there old man!..if we play 10 ahead,you got the six ball and all of the breaks!;BUT YOU'RE GONNA HAVE TO BET 10 DIMES!" ..So without missing a beat,flyboy turns to Scott and says"10 dimes? that's all .?! If you had any gamble/nuts(I forget the exact word he used) you'd get your OVER-RATED A$$ UP THERE RIGHT NOW AND BET 20 DIMES!..I DON'T WANNA PLAY FOR CHUMP CHANGE HERE,I WANNA BUST YOU!" I almost fell off of my chair I was laughing so hard! Of course ,Scott declined and they eventually played for 10k..

Flyboy beat Scott Frost like a steel-drum that night! It looked like he was stealing... :) :cool: :D :p

The Six and the Break on a bar table! That's why Fly wanted to double the bet. Maybe Scott thought this guy can't play. Jimmy was a road man for twenty years before he settled down and bought a poolroom.

He used to come through Bakersfield about once a year and we would play some cheap One Pocket, maybe 30 a game. I played my best back then, and it was break even game.

I watched Cliff Joyner torture flyboy giving him the exact same spot back in '97 at Lambert's..Cliff was running out from everywhere though and only missed 1 shot the entire set;flyboy kept breaking dry and Cliff was playing lights out! So I don't think that game was too far out of line,considering Cliff and Scott play about even.

I came out one set ahead, and even on the money when I played Cliff. Funny you mention "dry on the break." So did I. I would love to play that again with a neutral racker. I didn't have much experience when I played it the first time (fifteen years ago). I think we'd have fun. Yeah, a lot of fun. I have been with Cliff in Greenville, SC. when he gave Cowboy from Asheville the 3,5,7 and the break and won an eight ahead set. Cowboy can make a ball, too. Cliff gives up weight as well as any player I know.

i remmeber about 10-12 years ago there was really huge action going around the country. Flyboy was making Lousiana a big hub for pool players.
Too bad there isn't someone like that nowadays keeping the big action magic alive.

In Miami 10 years ago you could play Mario Cruz $50,000 sets with his loaded columbian backer,too. CJ wiley went there and won some

What you witnessed sir, was Cliff outrunning the nuts. It happens sometimes, but not often.

Were you still a roadie when Flyboy was going nuts? If so, do you have any stories of being around that area?

What you fail to recognize, Walt, is that it doesn't matter one damn bit how Cliff is playing at that game. It's all about how Fly is breaking the balls. When I was in stroke 30 years ago, damn, I would and did play anyone on earth with the 5 and the break on a bar box. The guy giving up the break can make every ball they shoot at and still lose all their cash. It's all about how I play and it's all about how Fly plays with the break and what ever ball.

You are 100% correct sir. If Fly would have utilized his break advantage against Cliff the outcome would surely have been different..Let me tell you,he had his mojo working against Scott Frost! He was making 2 and sometimes 3 balls a crack,and then he's only got 3 or 4 balls left sometimes! It got ugly really quick!

Any way you could give a description of Scotty sweating his nizzuts off when Flyboy started going bonkers on the break? :D :D

Don't ever think Jimmy couldn't play with the top players of the day back in the 70s. He busted Louie Roberts playing even on the bar table in Tupelo, MS.

That is unforgivable, Doug. Every other word was spelled right too. Do you remember the big time stake horse in Tupelo, Wendy? If you were playing for him all you had to do was win and you had a good chance to get your teeth fixed...

Miss. had three big time stake horses in the late 60s and all through the 70s. As I mentioned, Wendy, in Tupelo. In the Greenville area was the legendary, Larry "Buckwheat" Wade and on the Gulf Coast was the man who was always in action, Bill Lee. All three had hearts of gold and were loved by all the players and a few of us smart shortstops as well. I am sure, Grady, remembers all three with a fondness. Keith, if I'm not mistaken, knew, Bill Lee. Bill used to stake the late, God rest his soul, Denny Searcy. I sure miss those days of constant action. Jay, might remember Larry "Buckwheat" Wade from the, Gin, tournaments.

Is he still alive? I haven't heard anything about him in over 20 years. What about Bill Lee, a helluva guy?

By the way, the action report podcast with Keith and yourself was absolutely great, I could have sat for hours listening to Keith talk about the good old days.
