For sale cues question.

why do people that want to sell cues with Ivory list them as with "the good stuff" or Iv##y or some variation?

Eyevory is one of many plants and animals that are on the CITES list. California and other states are making laws that will make selling or owning these endangered substances much more difficult in the future. So sellers are reluctant to state the real name so they don't get in trouble selling cues with Elephant teeth in their construction.

The sellers still want the value that this "good stuff" adds to there cue so they mask it with these nick names. ;)

Fear of drawing attention from authorities.

The feds use web crawling bots that spot key words and phrases to get leads for everything from human trafficking to terrorism, and more. They are already using dogs trained to sniff ivory at shipping centers/depots/ports.

If they're about my age, they might have gotten into that habit when phoning a friend and using code words for a lid in case the police were listening in to make a major bust of a sammich bag of weed at a $15 sales price! lol

Hahaha "a lid".....I have not heard that term used in 40 years.

A true four finger bag.

I was told once along time ago and forgot, something to do with tobacco?

I think it's the amount that will fit in the lid of the jar or can that it is in. Pretty sure, but not 100%.

Literally a lids worth.

Thanks for the info, I think I knew that at one time, Not sure why I forgot it:wink:

It's part of a worldwide effort to cut back on the brutal, wasteful, mass poaching that's driven the animals to the edge of extinction.

I wouldn't worry too much about pool cues. The crisis is driven by China, where they're considered a luxury item and carry social significance, as well as an aphrodisiac. The prices can exceed gold, and the tusks from a single adult elephant can yield 10x the average annual income in a lot of African countries.

Hope this helps lol

I bought a cue once....it loved peanut butter....but it was afraid of mice

I really do not know why cue makers still use Ivory in their cues.
I guess cause it jacks up the value.
But for play-ability there are better, cheaper materials to use that looks the same.
Back when ... Ivory was about the only material that would polish up, resist chalk marks, and play well. Today there are better choices.
I guess it is just an opinion but Ivory has no real place in a modern pool cue other than adding to the price and nostalgic value.

I agree 100000%.

I have a few (VERY few) friends that "claim" they can tell the difference between "the good stuff".... lol .... and a few other "extremely cheap" materials.

Lol ... well, a cue maker friend of mine put various types of ferrule materials on several cues and taped them so the ferrule could not been seen. He carried the cues to several tournaments and let some very strong players..... Alex, DO and several others hit balls with them.

Guess what?.... Not one of them could tell the ivory from the cheap stuff..... not a one.

So, why do some claim they can tell? I guess they are better/more in tune with cues than the worlds best players.

Think of selling water to thirsty people.... you can rob them, right? Yes and why?..... cause they "need" it.

Ivory is not a "need" for playability. Its "at most", just something someone wants for "whatever" reason.

I use to would have argued against my post but after some of the VERY BEST players in the world said "I can't tell"....... lol....

Yep. Approx. 1/8oz. Don't ask why i know this. Statute of limit. ran out. I hope. ;)

A hunk of ivory as a joint has a distinct feel, though...in my experience.

Just a thought.... wouldn't it stand to reason the bots are also looking for "i##ry" and "eyevory"? If I was a fed, I would be.

I've been guilty of spacing (i v o r y), but thought myself silly because if I was a fed, I'd have that iteration programmed into my bot too.

"The good stuff" might be an exception for the versatility of the expression (could be anything from a lid (lol) to a tusk to a McStarbucks chai latte, no?), but if the bots are sophisticated enough to sort sources, maybe not.
