Forfeits at the US Open one pocket?

I was just looking through the draw to check up on some friends that are playing and noticed that there seems to be an unusually large number of forfeits. Anyone know why? It seems like a pretty big event for people to be no-showing so I'm surprised.

I was very surprised too. One of the local players to Northern CA, Amar, forfeited his matches, and he had his entry paid from a qualifier he won. Also, Az's Fatboy entered the tournament and forfeited his matches, and he lives in Vegas...makes no sense.

We spoke to Amar recently and he was very enthusiastic about getting back into pool. I hope everything is okay.

Of course, Vegas does have quite a few distractions, so to speak! :embarrassed2:

Pass it on

If you had to forfeit cuz of unexpected circumstances, why not give the spot to somebody there at the venue.the spot is paid ,i'm sure with probably over 7,000 pool players in LAS Vegas we could have come up with a alternate.I'm curious to know exactly how many forfeits were there? Wasn't the draw done a few day's befor?

For those looking for the brackets, look here: http://www.ctsondemand.com/

The forfeits I see are:
Amar Kang (both)
Fatboy (both)
Adam Keiler (both)
Dee Atkins (both)
James Davis (losers' side)

So there were four no-shows out of 64 players.

pass it on

Ok so there were 4 no shows.the question still is,why was a alternate player with about 7,000 pool players in Las vegas not asked if they wanted to fill the slots? This is the US open one pocket championships.......is this not the biggest one pocket event in the united states?

I think it would be nice to have "standby players" but on the other hand, if I'm Fatboy's scheduled opponent, and he has back trouble and can't play, and the TD says, "Normally you would get a forfeit, but Thorsten Hohmann just showed up early from the Manila Open and wants to play, so you have a match after all," I would feel somewhat abused.

I think once the draw is done, there should be no substitutions. Any no-show needs to let the TD know before the draw that he won't be there.

Amar was here but hurt his arm. Fatboy was in LA & explained in a post on here. Keilar won a qualifier in Maryland and did not show. The pool room he won at should have sent #2. The match he forfeited was to me. James Davis had to play in Scotch Doubles in the bar tournament.

I am signed up to play in the Super Seniors eight ball and will have to forfeit because I am still on the winners side in the one pocket. They warned me when I signed up this could happen but I took a chance.

Do not know about Dee Atkins, must be a good reason as he is a great player.

Agreed................

Thanks for the clarifications.

And continued good shooting!

He made a post on onepocket org that explained why he didn't go. It doesn't appear that his back was the determining factor for not going.

I agree, for anyone that knew more then a day ahead of time that they weren't going to play, they should contact the TD and let them know and the TD should open it up for someone else to take that spot, even if it's short notice.

With a big name tourney.. it's a shame there's empty spots and people that would want to play don't get to. Also, for the fans wanting to see a particular person, maybe that's the one that didn't play because of a forfeit, and the fan loses out on seeing his player play.

i didnt go, I thought about it and I really wanted to play in it, but then I got to thinking about Vegas. I just moved away from 9 days ago, the past 3 years there have been like jail. I didnt feel like driving 4.5 hours, blowing $1500 on a room for a week and gas etc, hell maybe $2000 to go back to a city that makes me sick to think about? I'll pass. If I never go to Vegas again its fine with me. I sure do have lots of friends there I miss, but staying in a hotel, eating shit food, dealing with parking, to play 2 sets of 1P and see friends just is not the plan. I'll see everyone at another tournament in the future-soon. And my back is all jacked up recently so who knows that drive could have taken me out of action anyways.

They had an interesting way of handling the forfeits at the US Open One Pocket (don't know about the 10-ball).

IIRC, if a player was late at all, they were docked one game (not match), then if they were still a no-show after a designated amount of time (10-15 minutes? I'm not sure), they were docked a second game. Then maybe again, after certain number of minutes, they were either forfeited out (in the loser's side for sure, since it was a race to 3), or maybe one more game (the winner side races were to 4.

I heard that this gradual forfeit came into play at least once, I think with Danny Harriman, who must have been late for a match and lost a game or two in the match due to lateness.

PS, they also seemed pretty strict about the dress code -- and not just at the TV table. I witnessed one player being sent out to change after an exchange that went something like this:
Player, "I wore this at Derby City Classic."
Tournament official, "This isn't the Derby City Classic."

That was Santa Monica's own "One Pocket" Rich. He had to dash down to the strip and desperately find and buy a suitable pair of pants and run back to the tournament just in time to beat the forfeit deadline.

Forfeits happen in pool tournaments... so what.

I agree with Bob J... no substitutions after the draw is done.
