Obviously he has been around for awhile and is a great player, but I have never heard of this guy?

He is from PONCA CITY, oklahoma. Many years ago( when his father-in-law had money) he used to have a standing offer to play anybody in the World for 100,000.00$ on bar box to be played in Ponca City only.Rumor was that efren practiced on bar Box to play david but that did not happen.

I had the pleasure to get to see him play back in 2002 at The Break in Cahokia, IL. He was a complete gentleman and a great player. He placed 7th out of 99 players at that event.

Today I think you'd be hard pressed to find a pro European player to even look at the barbox, let alone play on it. What's the point when there are 9ft tables around?

And this David guy. He must be super talented. But don't you think all these years of playing on smaller tables with big CB hurt his 9ft game at least somewhat?

David Matlock is one of the greatest players who never made a name for himself beyond the innermost circles of pool.

.................

If any of you can get it, get David's long lost video on Bar Box 9-Ball. In it he tortures Johnny archer and Steve Mizerak. I have it and that may be my contribution to somehow convert it to DVD and put it up on YouTube for everyone to enjoy. Colin, can you do something like that?

John
Maybe I can help John,
Would be great to have that video on Cue-tv.com via youtube so people could always find it easily.

If you get a DVD I could probably convert it, but not sure. Maybe you can find some place to make an mpeg or avi file from the original.

I could even post it in 30 minute or longer segments on youtube as I have director status there.

Shoot me an email if you want to go ahead and I'll help where I can.

Colin

Matlock ...

Actually David is from a little town called Starlight, Mo. in western Mo.. He lived for years in various cities of Oklahoma playing anyone that wanted some big action. I believe Keith has played him 2-3-4 times during those times.

Funny, while playing a 9 ball tournaemnt last night, I heard another story about David. (besides the double jump and others), seems David was playing last pocket, and couldn't bank the 8, so he called going into one corner pocket, coming back out of it, and going caddy-corner in his corner pocket, and made the shot. Came up talking about best shots ever seen discussion.

What was his father-in laws name? I've been sitting here trying to remember.
We went through Ponca City and it was amazing to watch David pratice. He had the break on that table down to a science.I remember when he was running with Ronny Phoebes (spelling). What a character he was.

Many, many years ago, we were on the road and were going through Amarillo Tx. We stopped in the pool room (Harveys) and there was quite a crowd gathered watch a pretty intresting match.
It took me a second to figure out that the one in cowboy boots and hiding under a baseball cap was David. The other player only took until he spoke, because he was one of the most irritating people ever to play the game. Richie Ambrose. Mr. 9- Ball himself.
They were playing, as best I can remember, 10 ahead for aroun $3000. It seems like they were pretty close to even after several hours of play when Richie went into his act.
Anyway, with David uup 2 games, Richie stood over the rack and asked David his name.
David responded with, David. Good blasted Richie. dohave a last name? Matlock, responded David. Very good blasted Richie. Where are you from asked Richi? Ponca City responded David. And where in the hell is Ponca City blasted Richie? Oklahoma responded David.
Richie went off the air. Ain't this a *****, I am Mr. 9-ball, the best in the US and I can't beat some no named punk from Ponca City OKLA?
David stood up rather straight and simply took his ball cap and turned it around backwards and proceeded to put an 8 pack on Mr 9-ball and win the set.
David is not real emotional. He simply turned his cap back around, went to the other end of the table, looked Mr 9 ball right in the eye and said, "punk, huh"?
Richie Ambrose looked as if his head were gonna pop. I laughed so hard, I nearly wet my pants.
YOu know, in 25 years, David hasn't changed much.

Bobby Baldwin. Bobby told me once that he swears there was a month when they were running together when David didn't miss a ball at all, practicing or otherwise.

I know Bobby, but there was another guy, pretty rich who used want to bet outrageous money on Dave too. Wasn't his name Duggan or something like that? Long time ago!

Finishing 7th place in this event that had what, 200 players? I think it's safe to say that it hasn't hurt him. ;)

You have a good point, because I know for a fact that Jesse Bowman, who is supposedly the best bar box player in the world right now, is not considered a top player on a 9 foot table. Dave Matlock is a top player on both. With Dave being in stroke right now, and playing Jesse for a large sum on a barbox, I think Dave would be the favorite (even though barbox 9-ball is nothing more than a break contest).

Lets not forget who the REAL king of the 7 footer of all time (with the big rock) is, and that would be none other than Keith McCready.

That David used to captialize on that rumor that he was only a barbox player and couldn't play on a big table, and made a lot of money from it...lol I watched him run 9 10 ball racks in a $10 ring game with 6 other players at Rumors here in Wichita one day during a 2-3 day tournament.

To show some honesty on David's game, I saw Reed Pierce beat him here, in St Louis, on a big table. But to David's defense, he had just switched to a new cue that he obviously wasn't happy with & never saw someone miscue that many times in my life. He actually switched to 2 or 3 other cues during the match but could never seem to find one to his liking.
