Foul on all balls

I have always played foul on all balls. I just don't understand playing cue ball fouls only.

Some of the difficulty of shots come from shooting over other balls and if you can simply touch the other balls without infraction the pressure and difficulty of those shots can often be minimized.

Are most tournaments played cue ball foul only or foul on all balls? I hate that "put it wherever you want" crap. Seems to me that the simple rule should always be that if you touch any of the balls in play it's a foul.

Has there been a widespread growth in cue ball fouls only lately?
 
All sanctioned league play is CB foul only, and has been for 30 years. Touch fouls are the realm of professional pool only (with the exception of 14.1, which, in some amateur cases, is still played with touch fouls...I have always played touch fouls in straight pool!). It would be far too difficult for the huge majority of amateur players to play 'touch fouls'. Ball-in-hand rules were also developed 30 years ago, to speed up the game for t.v., among other reasons.

I don't play much league pool. Maybe that's where people get that from. I guess it's because I play golf. To me it just seems wrong to be able to move the balls around! Don't touch or move the balls except on a legal shot! Fortunately through experience I've learned that it needs to be crystal clear in the very beginning. If I forget to mention it or agree upon it before a match then I will play CB fouls only, but it sure is stupid and frustrating.

I'm 30 years old and I've been playing since I was about 15....thanks for making think about that. I sure do suck for someone who's been playing for 15 years. I think I'm going to go burn my cue....haha.

it is just that most adults don't call something stupid & frustrating just because they don't agree with it.

How often does this issue come up in the group that you shoot with?

Uh, why is it okay to touch the golf ball when it's on the putting green?

Burning your cue could be interesting....
..British snooker players play pretty good with ash cues...:smile:

I don't mind playing all fouls....but ONLY with a referee.
.and that is often impractical
 
Seems that the good ole USA is the only country in the world that embraces 'cue ball only fouls'

Also, the USA has the largest population of bar box playing players in the world.

It doesn't take much to abide by the rules, but unfortunately, pool players in the USA don't learn all the rules before playing the game and certainly don't know how to referee a game.

I certainly don't have any trouble playing by the rules. I just wish more players knew the rules.
 
I thought the use of CB fouls only in pro events was mainly to avoid delays and arguments when there is no ref presiding, because even in professional events that play CB fouls they typically go to all ball fouls for the semis and final where a ref presides over the match.

I'm not sure I agree with this though, since by this line of reasoning you could argue that only CB in pocket scratches should be considered fouls to avoid arguments over whether a ball hit a rail or not.

I'll play either way an event is being run but I do prefer all ball fouls, especially in 14.1 and 1 pocket.

Just a comment about the rules. OP stated he always played 'all ball fouls', my statement just pointed out that the USA is mostly a 'cue ball only' fouls country.

i imagined that i read something about bar boxes, americans not learning the rules, americans not being able to refere & you having no problem following rules.

Somebody should tell Spain and Australia that the USA is the only CB Foul Nation....:-)

Doesn't bother me either way. I play cue ball fouls in league, and play all ball fouls the rest of the time. As long as the rules are the same for all the players playing at that time its still a fair game.

Who is going to call the foul? All fouls goes back to when you have ref's with suits hanging over your shoulder watching everything. It is too hard to fairly enforce.
Also, moving a ball can be a foul. There are rules in place that govern the moving of balls. You can't just be moving balls all over the place.

Whats with you.everybody has to explain,everything in complete detail to you,just because you might not understand what they are saying or meaning!
