FS: Gus Szamboti

I did speak to Fatboy a little while back about the cue. Maybe he will chime in if he see's this post.

My friend is much more of a player than a cue collector. This cue is awesome and belongs with someone that will appreciate it. Would love to see it as part of a Szam collection. This cue has seen a lot of action!

CALLING FATBOY!!!! CALLING FATBOY!!!!!

Barry has authenticated this cue based on pictures. He says its one of his dads, looks like an original wrap and looks to have had a refinish.

This cue represents the best value for money on AZ in a LONG time. This is a super rare Gus (maple, ebony points with no veneers....how many of them are there?) for $5000. Instant investment.

Bump for a good seller.

My first Gus looked like this one, with ebony points into bird's-eye maple, and no veneers or inlays. But mine had an ivory joint, nickel rings at the joint, and leather wrap.

From looking at these pics, I'm guessing this cue is the real deal.

I gave them, person selling it, the info on the cue.

It was originally purchased by Danny D'imperio. Gus was a personal friend and made it per Danny's request. Plain with smaller collars, ivory ferrules. He, i believe, used it in the bars as a player and wanted a plain looking cue. He has(had) other Gus cues also. The cue was passed down through Roy Futternick who then gave it to Wayno(sp) at what was then Great America and is now Hard Times in Sacramento. When Roy gave it to Wayno it had two original ivory ferruled shafts. Wayno sold it after not playing with it for years to Rich Marquez in the SF Bay Area. Its up for sale now.

I saw the cue recently and confirmed where it came from. Its a little rough, finish chips, dings etc. probably refinished some time ago, wrap appears to be original.

Nice unique players cue with history. Many people know Danny and Roy, they can confirm if needed.

I know this cue...

if that cue is in N Cal, I think I know it, Wayno the midget had one exactly like that, I played with it, a few times in 86-88, one night in 87 he said "Take It" I said how much? "$300 now get the fvck out of my office". Being the frugal guy I am I didnrt want to spend $$$ I didnt have, I had a SW(I still have it) comming in a month, I was making ok $$ playing but I passed-It was worth $600-$800 at the time, Wayno was just being nice to me-I didnt realize that until I thought of it many years later, I was young. I also realized later that when you can step into equity, take the step, again I was young and too careful. So That cue taught me some valuable lessions I will never forget-Gods honest truth.

One thing about Wayno's cue, I cant remember 100% but I'm 90% think it only had one shaft because he never took it apart, it was just leaning in his office all the time, It was dead straight because he moved it often. So that might explaine the difference in the 2 shafts. Wayno's cue had zero finish left on it, but had a real dirty wrap like the cue pictured. Because Wayno was a midget he kinda used it as a cain and the bumper was worn down to the point it was up inside the Delrin butt plate so the cue in this picture has a different bumper, by the looks of the amount of wear on it, it looks like its had some use since it was replaced. I did hear Wayno had the cue refinished. I'd say its better than even $$ this is wayno's cue.

Yes i'm kicking my self in the ass 21 years later that I didnt buy it, but I did learn 3 valuable lessions from it, the reason I remember it so well is not was it a missed oppertunity, I dont and didnt care about the $$$ because I never would have sold it, I was upset that I was young and made a poor decision, and Wayno wanted to do something nice for me, he never treated me with respect when we spoke but his actions were respectful, and I didnt read that right, I know this because I bust young guys balls sometimes who I respect the same as Wayno did me.

$5,000 is fair for that cue, I'm not going to buy it, who ever does should send it to Barry for a escrow and pay Barry accordingly, he will awalys honer his dad and do that for his dad's cues. Its the only way to buy a Szam.

regards

Fatboy

Right Thing To Do

The buyer should have Bary properly restore this cue. The original shaft should have the ivory ferrule replaced, and a proper matching shaft should be made, preferably from one of Gus's shaft blanks. Bary can save the original wrap.

If it were original, I would leave it alone. But since it looks to have been poorly refinished, it should be properly restored.

If this is a original and legit GUS szamb CUE as what you guys are saying..why is it hte cue still not SOLD YET? :scratchhead:

Because it needs work!! Not the original finish only 1 original shaft. The wait to have it refinished by Barry would be long. I don't believe the wrap can be saved, it can be cleaned Magic Erase works [Searing cleaned the wrap on my Gus this way] But I highly doubt it can be removed - then replaced. Somebody will buy it might take a few days. Good luck
BTW I spoke to Barry about him doing some work on mine & asked about alternatives. I mentioned Searing doing the work & he said this would be an acceptable alternative. JFYI

Barry's not taking in any repair work at this time. He states so on his answering machine msg.

Right on. Which is why I didn't buy it. And I knew the cue.

G. Szam

Thank you Diamond for the post. I especially appreciate you getting the pics to Barry for him to authenticate. And, thanks to Fatboy and Deadon for backing up the cue's history. All of the history I've gotten about the cue I believe to be true.

I agree that it should get to the Szamboti family for an overhaul. And it should be properly placed in a collection. Of course, if it had the original finish and the 2nd shaft was confirmed original.. well, it would never even have made it to the For Sale board. How many G. Szamboti cues do people have an opportunity to buy?

It may not be the original finish but the cue looks very good and plays just as smooth as any cue made today.

And... underneath the clear coat is still an original, custom made, Gus Szamboti cue.

lineage

After Rich M. got the cue from Wayno, he sold it to Mark Choo (sp?). Mark's dad was Lenny Choo who owned a pool room in Fremont. Lenny passed away and Mark sold the cue to my friend.

I wasn't bashing the cue just answering the question why it hadn't sold.
I think your in the ballpark as for $$$ but it might take some time.
I'll ask again is the cue straight? when this is answered it may speed up the sale. Hope it finds a new home soon:thumbup:

Straight.

Sorry for the delay on the cue being straight. I just returned the cue last night but I will call my friend and ask him to confirm if it's straight or not. Will get you guys an answer asap.

The cue is straight with the original shaft. Both, butt and shaft, were straight recently when I looked at it. Its a unique cue.

BUMP for a Gus Szamboti. Not too many of these floating around. Much less one that was custom ordered. :D

Sounds like a legitimate history. I remember Danny playing with a Gus years ago. He and Roy are/were top speed players. And Rich ain't bad either. Wayno was more of a gambler.
