Gabe Owen forfeits in Austin

It sooooooooo good to share a good laugh with ya old buddy. Thank god Fat Ralph was not behind the counter in Vegas with that sweetie

I knew you were going to bring that up at some point. A lot has changed since those days. Plus my wife trolls around here sometimes and doesn't have any need to know anything about that episode.

While I might agree that it might not be fair to Gabe to crucify him for walking out on this weekends tour, I don't think you can say that Gabe's membership here helps the cause.
He joined here and posted 3 times looking for sponsorship. That's his total contribution to this forum.
GABESMOM, on the other hand, is a valued member here, and it really must pain her to have to read all the crap that is said about her son. Full credit is due to her, for posting responses in such a reasonable demeanor to this thread.

It really is a shame to take shots at such a nice guy and with his Mom watching as most know.

Gabesmom is so nice and always so upbeat about everything.

Gabe has played at many of our events over the years and when he and Jeremy won the US Open, I sued it as much as I possibly could and neither of them ever complained about it for one second.

I remember Gabe standing with about 15-20 people waiting for him to autograph a copy of Inside Pool and he obliged every one of them in the most decent manner. Guys like Gabe are still human and with human feelings and concerns and it should be respected.

To his Mom and family I apologize that this has arisen over on of my tournaments. I feel very ashamed.

Some of you are ridiculous!!! You can NOT complain about room closings, and then complain when a room is trying to do what it must to stay open! It is a business the owner is trying to run.

Gabe Owen is a supposed to be a professional pool player, therefore ANYTHING and EVERYTHING he does related to pool is open to public scrutiny!
If he doesnt like it TOUGH. Professionals in all sports must put up with it.
For all those that say that pro golfers do it, and its okay. Please name those players, and if they still play on the tour.

First of all, ironman and myself are the tournament directors for the Fast Eddie's 9 Ball Tour.

Up front, let me say Gabe did nothing wrong. He is a fine man and a great player.

To say the least, the playing conditions were miserable. At one point, I made the annoucement that sweat falling on the table or object balls was not a foul. IT WAS HOT!!!!!

The temperature outside in Austin on Saturday was 102. At 10 p.m. that night, it was still 90 degrees. The general manager told me that the air conditioning system is computer controlled to turn off at night and it just couldn't catch up with 350+ people in attendance.

Y'all know that pool players like to woof, bark and gossip, so there was a lot of extra hot air floating around! LOL

We have a tough bunch down here! I have nothing but admiration for the spectators and players that stuck it out and made this event the success that it was.

Also, congratulations to Sylver Ochoa and Amanda Lampert on their victories.

Tell the General Manager that:

1) Computers can be re-programmed or turned off. What a lame excuse to have such horrible conditions.

2) It probably costs more to have the a/c completely off at night and fire back up each day. A/C not only cools but also removes humidity.

If you offered poof positive of the above, guaranteed by Alex Trebeck-Members of the skinflint family (Cheapus Douchbagus) would still be unable to keep that AC on.

I already gave a specific example that I witnessed personally. Read the thread.

Thanks Ed for the compliment. But I don't mind reading everyone's different opinions. That's what the forums are for, and most everyone gathered here is very passionate about the game. It doesn't pain me except when things are being said - no matter who it's about - if all considerations aren't made. (still waters can run deep!) As an example, when one player banged his head, if for no other reason than just being a frustrated human being that day.

First, I know that this career is of utmost importance to Gabe, and I trust that he tries to make the best decisions most of the time. Granted he's not perfect, as no one is, so all decisions may not always be the best, as most of us may find that we don't always make the best either. We all have our days!

Gabe is sooo busy that he doesn't get on AZB much, and joined and put the sponsor thread since some of his buds did. But he has always gotten on occasionally to read what's going on, since this is a great place to find it!

Now, anyone know who was the other player that forfeited?

No need for an apology to me! I think most people in the pool world know that sh*t happens, especially in this sport. :yikes: That's why it takes so many dedicated people to try to hold on and overcome them as they arise.

But thanks for the kind words! :smile2:

It's becoming clear why Gabe is the Champion he is! Awesome mom!

I'll be reporting from the Texas Open again this year. It was fun last year when Gabe played Mike Davis and yourself and Mike's dad, "Fletir" here on AZ I believe, were both sweating the match by my posts!

Glad you're here Gabesmom! It's really cool!

Wow, I can't wait, Bigtruck! I remember now.

Thanks for the compliment. I'm gonna sit his @*# down at this computer to read these lovely posts when he comes back to Kansas after the New York tourney. Maybe he'll be nicer to me! :happydance:

(just kidding, he's pretty nice to me..... most of the time)

Can't wait til your play by play again! I'll just hope he's in one of the matches!

Considering the news about the blistering temperatures I think his departure was understandable. I don't like that his decision appears to have been partially based on his frustration with an early round loss, as we like to hope that our champions would rise above such things and fight on. In the end I guess it comes down to the fact that he is human like the rest of us. I know I have let my frustration get the best of me at times. And Gabesmom, you are a class act. Thanks for your insights.

The real reason he dropped out was because he was matched up against Travis Trotter in his next match. You just don't mess with Travis Trotter.

Now isn't that just about par for a mom running interference for her son? :yeah:

Like someone else posted, there was more than just the heat....something else too I guess that posed a situation. And the losses probably didn't help. :shakehead:
(But as others have said too, he has been known to stick it out before from loser's brackets)

And thanks, but there's sure alot more 'classier acts' than me on AZB, and I appreciate being able to participate at times with you all.
I've enjoyed your insights too!

why wasnt there one at this tourney?

This tour went to San Angelo Texas in January. The Fast Eddies there had been open for about 6 months and the owner of a nother pool room there was very upset about the competition.

He called the Texas Alchohol Beverage Commision and cried to them about us holding calcuttas. They did their investigation and ordered us the stop and threatened to yank the lllliquor license of a 20 clubs in Texas if we didn't cease and desist.

I'm sure it was of great benfit to the other pool room and heard it yeilded him two more customers over the next 3 months. Now, maybe he can afford to put cloth on the foot rail of his first table.

I since heard he was going to get very tough if I mentioned his name on the internet, so I probably shouldn't mention that it was Giz & Hums pool room.
