With all the cell phones out there, thought someone would of first called the tournament and got the straights before they OPENED their trap.
It can be a little demoralizing to get beat by a 400lb man with a hustler cue with duct tape holding the butt together. Sorry Gabe, but you got beat by a player, not a pretender. So don't feel bad.Bigtruck said:Directly from the TD. Gabe lost and left. He's done it before.
He lost to Ralph "fat ralph" Cortez. Ralph doesn't look like a player at all. You might think to yourself, I got a bye. Ralph IS a very strong player though. Probably caught Gabe by surprise and he figured he wasn't playing good enough to even beat Ralph. LOL.

There is no calcutta. Hillbilly lost his first match and is still playing. These Fast Eddies tournaments are tough and there a lot of good local players. The pros don't have to win.Roadkill said:Did they have a Calcutta? Sometimes the TD will refund a portion of the player's auction in cases of forfeiture. If not, someone may be miffed.
mnorwood said:My vote is for leaving Gabe alone. He's a great champion and from what I have heard of him a good guy. Its just a Fast Eddie's tournament, he had no sponsors to play for, he had no money from a calcutta hanging over his head. I'm quite sure Fast Eddie's didn't pay his entry or his gas to get there. He violated nothing or no one by forfeiting reason or no reason which none of you have any information on. There is as much money in the upcoming amateur event in Houston, so what's the big deal?

When a top player leaves because they don't feel like wading through the one loss side, it hurts the room as less fans are going to stick around to watch two players they don't know play instead of a former US Open Champion.
From what I know of Gabe, he must have had something very important that took him away from the tournament.

Gabe has been on azb before as well as his mom. Dont be jerkoffs without knowing whats the truth.
Gabe is a great player and deserves more respect than this piling on crap.

What happened to playing the game because you love the game?. This is why I like SVB a lot, he practices 24/7. He doesn't have to play for money to get onto the table to hit some balls. There are a lot of players that won't get on the table unless they know there playing for something.

This is not about Gabe, but about all who conduct themselves in this manner. This kind of disregard by players for the rooms sponsoring events is far too common among the players. Players who feel no obligation to poolroom proprietors who, by funding them, invest in tournaments, are making it less attractive for poolroom proprietors to take the associated risks. It is certainly their right to behave in this manner, but they shouldn't act too surprised when potential investors in pro pool are scared away.

mnorwood said:First of all I respect your point of view. Don't take what I say as hostility towards you or pool hall owners. However, lets talk about pool room owners particularly Fast Eddies. Pool room owners (fast eddies) are businesses who are in it to make money, which is common sense. With that said they don't care one bit about pool players or the game for that matter. Although better than other Houston area pool hall chains fast eddies equipment is usually horrible. But I am a player, Fast Eddies keeps there place for bangers who buy beer and thats okay. Its a beer and spirits enterprise. However, don't criticize Gabe for an establishment who doesn't care about the game or its serious players. Most pool halls will not host a weekend tournament during reasonable hours because in their mind pool players don't buy enough beer during a tournament. I say live and let live, no love lost, fast eddies will survive but how much longer will pros like Gabe stay in it? Its not like Fast Eddies did Gabe any favors. If they so much as gave him a glass of orange juice for free I publicly apologize for any comments I have made on this thread and I hope the mod deletes the post.

Snapshot9 said:ever been through the loser's side of a 128 player tournament? If you have, then you already know the answer, having to win 13 matches to get to the final match. QUOTE]
There is truth to this under certain conditions. For example, The yearly event at Breakers in Mobile, Alabama.
This event fills up at 128 and they have 12 bar boxes I believe. It basically runs non stop 24hrs straight the whole weekend. It's a great event but tough conditions.
Every year I have been to this I get about 4 hours of sleep the whole weekend and that's between matches pretty much. Most likely if you lose your first match in this event you will be playing until 8 am the next day and have to be back at noon to play again. Even if you stay in the winners side you will be there until the very early AM.
I got 7th the year before last which paid over $1k all together. Then last year I lost my 1st match double hill, Drew Schmidt in the losers side after he lost his 1st as well and we both forfeited.
Point is some events under certain conditions no matter what the pay is understandable to see "any" player forfeit. Which is why I stay away from buying players in a cal unless it's myself, Someone I know will play it through no matter what, or a player nobody really knows about that I have seen play.

He may have had a better opportunity pop up also.
With no sponsors or calcutta I agree that he has every right to quit whenever he wants to. I also agree that we have every right to not think highly of the actions of being a quitter.mnorwood said:My vote is for leaving Gabe alone.
