Gabe Owen forfeits in Austin

This tour went to San Angelo Texas in January. The Fast Eddies there had been open for about 6 months and the owner of a nother pool room there was very upset about the competition.

He called the Texas Alchohol Beverage Commision and cried to them about us holding calcuttas. They did their investigation and ordered us the stop and threatened to yank the lllliquor license of a 20 clubs in Texas if we didn't cease and desist.

Seems I recall there being a thread about this some time back...

Edit: Ah yes, here it is.

Man was it hot in that poolroom. That is the most I have ever sweated playing pool. (literally not figuratively). Gabe and I were (like dumbasses) played 6 games of Super Shot, the basketball game in the corner, right before a match. He went of to play Ralph and was already red as can be.( from dropping 40 to me and the heat) He lost but to his defense Ralph but a move on him. He was not happy and left. I also lost my match to Brandon Shuff who did not miss. I felt like leaving as well. Glad I did not because I got revenge on Shuff later in the tourney. I dont not blame Gabe for leaving, fought all I had not to do the same.

Nice post, Jr. Damn Super Shot!

P.S. Great Finish (5th/6th)! You had tough competition but took them down!

Soooooo.......what was the move?

Nice post, Jenn! I remember this event. Larry almost had him.

There is one thing people are forgetting sbout an event like this with Gabe. When you have these many people in an event and if they do some type of time schedule for match times, maybe Gabe missed his match time. He wouldn't be the first pool player to miss a match time. It happens at the US Open every year. It never fails!

My 2 cents, for what it's worth.

All in all, a nice thread, with an objective examination of the issues surrounding players who opt to forfeit a match in mid-tournament.

As is often my inclination, I stated the case from the vantage point of the fans of the game and the room proprietors who stage events. What I got in return was a lot of courteous, well-stated and well-reasoned rebuttals that have given me a broader view of the issues.

While I'm still struggling to get away form the issue that mid-tournament forfeits by prominent players make pool look bad, I now realize that it's not as cut and dried as it appears.

Thanks to my fellow posters for the education.

Wow - this is an awesome post. You could have kept this to yourself, but I think it's great you posted your thoughts.

Civilized forum power by posters who respect others views even if they don't have the same perspective as them and know how to get their point across without belittling others. .:yeah:

Don't see this enough on here sometimes. A dying breed, but there are a few out there.

I kind of consider pool tournaments much like horse races. People aren't betting on mechanical machines in either one. (although, some people do consider some players - Efren, Hitman, and alot more of them as mechanical machines!) But of course there can be lots of surprises.

For instance, recently at the Belmont, Big Brown, who was built up pre-race as 'guaranteed to win'. (that alone scared me,:yikes: so I didn't bet on him) But he finished dead last, as Kent, the jockey, said his horse just 'didn't show up' for whatever reason. (personally, I think it was a jinx or karma or whatever you want to call it, for the guy that guaranteed him :shakehead:)

So Kent realized he didn't 'show up' that day, and took it easy on him because of what had happened to Eight Belles in the prior race. (and the speculation as to what happened to Big Brown continues)

I personally think that most all the pros anyway (not just Gabe, but most all of those that I'm aware of) have pretty good track records and do their best not only for themselves but for everyone involved much more often than not. And if something doesn't go quite right, then just wait til next time, as in horse races, or really most any sport. JMHO

there are times when it just ain't your day

We should all know that there are times when it just ain't your day. If it isn't and conditions are brutal, nothing wrong with calling it a day. There have been a few times that had I not lost I would have forfeited also, just too rough on me to continue without the likelihood of substantial reward at the end of the event.

I don't know if what Gabe did was the best call or not, nobody but Gabe does. I do know it was his call to make.

After viewing aka Trigger's pictures from the tournament I discovered what "the move" was!!!:shocked2:

This thread has over 5,000 reads and 120 posts...no wonder not many pros come on here or stay very long if they do. I think most of us need a life away from AZ for awile. Becoming a bunch of old hens. Johnnyt

Actually there was some great dissussions in this thread giving different viewpoints on forfeiting a match.

When a thread is civilized and open discussion, I think pros will start staying longer! Part if what makes a professional is considering other views.

Hope you don't take that break.

You always hear about this it seems now. Heard the story just recently where a player that someone bought in the calcuttas for the tune of 1500 or so for both didn't want half of it and quit after he lost his first match to go play a money game elsewhere leaving the guy rather stuck.

I've heard more good things than bad about Gabe I don't know him personally, hopefully he got ill or had some sort of family emergency and everything is alright....Rather than hearing he just quit because he lost a match.
did you proof read this.hmmmm:confused: I think just quitting a match would be better than a family emergency.call me silly.
