Gabe Owen vs Sylver Ochoa Saturday

Something feels funny about this one. And not that way. Sylver has gained a lot of confidence in his game lately, and for good reason. He's playing great right now. His game has jumped a full speed in the last six months.

Whether that's good enough to handle a player like Gabe is another question. IMO Gabe is one of the best One Pocket players alive today. Right there with Cliff, T-Rex, Alex, Jeremy and Scott. He might even be the favorite.

What it comes down to is who is in the best stroke right now. My pick is that if Gabe is playing his normal speed for the last two years, he is the slight favorite. Sylver has the game to make it close, but Gabe still moves a little more consistently, and can run balls better than anyone this side of Reyes.

I would take Gabe based on the premise he will make fewer errors and capitalize the most on his opponents mistakes. As far as pocketing balls, Sylver can fire them in from all angles, banks included. But that's not what wins One Pocket matches.

Final score: Gabe 8, Sylver 6.

I'm with you on this one Jay.

Gabe is one of my favorites, but there is something funny about this one and as you said, NOT IN THAT WAY.

Sylver is full of confidence right now and not easily scared away. He loves the challenge and loves to prove doubters wrong. These are great qualities for an aspiring player.

Ggabe though has been up and down the pike more than once and will know the BIG IMPORTT shots and so will Sylver after this weekend.

You gotta love "Heart" though.

About what time is the match scheduled to kick off?

I might have to video this one!

Should be a great match. I was very impressed with Ochoa's game at the Hollywood Billiards tournament, and I sweated two sessions of him gambling with Scott Frost getting a little weight. He's at that stage where you don't know how good he might get, but he needs a little jump to get by this one IMO. I watched T-Rex do it a few years ago. He got better every time you saw him play. Wish I could be there. John Henderson

Sylver was in the finals of the Bank Pool at Dcc !!!!
He is turning into one of the great all around pool plyers in the country.......in a hurry.

I'm wondering how many days this could last? I saw John S and Gable play for a couple days and nobody won and I think it was only a 5 ahead one pocket match. Maybe I can figure out a way I can make that match, would be fun to sweat.

Gabe is probably favored a little in this, but I still think Sylver is going to pull this one out. I'd love to see the video if Stones records it! I'm definitely glad Sylver is getting a little more attention....I have been watching him for a few years now and he is definitely impressive.

At Derby Sylver lost 4 games in a row to Billy Incardona even up and then 2 more games in a row getting 9-8 from Billy, all at $500 a game, I think.

On the topic at hand of Gabe and Sylver, here is one of my favorite photos from the tournament Sylver won July 13th in Austin at the Fast Eddie's tournament:

TTT My offer still stands...$100 on Sylver, getting 2 on the wire.

Charlie, Gabe is laying pretty sporty odds on the $$$. If you'll lay me 3 to 2 (semi-sociable) I'll wager Sylver does not get more than 6 games in a race to 8. Another side wager, I'll bet they play more than one session!

Dick

PS PM me if interested. PayPal prefered.

If your interested, Ill lay $100 to your $70 that Sylver at least gets to 6. Paypal payable the next day.

Charlie

BTW, I agree with you 100% they will play more than one set.

We're close Charlie. You overlooked a key word. I said MORE than 6 games for Sylver ( you are to smart for me) ;)
How's this sound. I'll take the $100 to $70 you offered, But I say he won't reach 7 games. If he makes it to 6 (and loses) it's a push. Of course he may just win it outright, in which case I would lose for sure.
Gabe is a notoriusly slow starter. :boring2:

Dick

PS obviously we'd be betting on the first set ONLY. Addl. sets would be subject to renegotiation. PayPal next day is perfect.

The time is Saturday at high Noon. The place is Bananas Billiards on San Pedro and Woodlawn in San Antonio Tx. The # there is 210-226-2627.

I think there a coouple of guys already recording this.

I'm going on recored as liking Gabe to win 2 sets. He is going to have to play though. Plus, the table is a tight and tricky gold crown that rollss about like the Mississippi River.
