Getting hustled story...?

On a road trip in the early 70s, three road players are travelling together. As the pickings on the road occasionally got slim, they started betting with one another. On the way into town, a sign says they are 21 miles away. They are in a very large car, and the driver says I bet I can make it in 15 mins. The other two bet him for $100 each. They make it in 17 mins.

The driver paid up, but continued to hold that he knew his car could make it. He said in the morning, fresh and with fresh gas, he could do it in 15 mins. After just seeing that he pushed the car to all it had, they agreed. This time betting $1000 each. They made the driver give them the keys to the car so he couldn't have anything done to it.

That night the driver snuck out, bought a shovel, and took a cab to the sign. He dug it up and moved it about 3 1/2 miles closer to town. The next day, they drove out until they saw the sign. The driver made it into town easily clearing the 15 minute mark.

Sounds like one of "Titanic Thompson" stories Iba...

I really don't know. I've never read the Titanic Thompson book. This was told to me by an older player I took on the road once. He actually had quite a few good stories. All of which I believe to be 100% factual.

The Titanic Thompson book about his life is a good one. If you get the chance, it is a pretty fun read.

Ofcourse, many have tried, all have failed.. you cant BS a BSer if you try I'll beat you like a drum...Play you like a fiddle, Im going to own your cue. that is what I do to people who try to hustle me..I manipulate the game enough to get you to bet your cue, then I take it, smash it, in front of you, and offer it back..This has a huge impact, some want to fight, others RUN, some just stand there and look at me like why me? I quess they think Im nuts, whitch is ok, cause I proboly am! lol

Never been hustled...I know what a lousy player I am, so I never play for money.

Saturday...I "played" the guy I consider to be the #2 player in the state of Oregon. One game, 8 ball, he made zilch on the break. I was really proud of my four ball run, and thought I'd left him with a difficult position. I never shot again...I'm glad we're friends. Wating him play at his near pro level is a joy. Playing him is a bore...I seldom get to shoot, and when I do shoot, it's been so long since I've shot, that my aim is gone... On the other hand, I get lots of practice at racking. :)

Browning came to my town before he knew how to play pool;) and I beat him out of a bit of $ playing cheep sets. He quit me when I wouildn't betmore.

He learned to play over the next few months;) , to the point where he was playing 2k sets wit hthe best player in our room...giving said best the 8...

I believe the stall was on and I dodged a bullet.

Bucktooth, and no I'm not cornfed

At DCC year before last, a few guys were discussing Playing Off the Rail by David McCumber - I hadn't read it yet. This and that is said. They say, "There's a lot about that guy [pointing and referring to Bucktooth] in it."

When I look over to see Bucktooth, he's talking to a buddy of mine (a C+ player at best) that is at his first major pool tournament. He comes over right after we were talking about Bucktooth hustling and tells me this old guy who can't see too good wants to play some. He says the old guy enjoys the game, but just never played with any of these champions. My buddy, who can't compete with anyone in the room besides the waitress, is about to go withdraw all he can to bet Bucktooth. I nearly busted a gut when he told me.

I believe it was my 2nd week down in Florida. I was in a bar with 4 or 5 bartables in Oldsmar, FL beating all the jocks and horse trainers for hours. Finally when I couldn't get anyone else to play, the the barmaid says "he'll play ya some", pointing to Buddy. We started at $20 a game and I won 2 out of the first 3. Anyhow he hooked me good all the way up to $60 a game. He wound up getting me for a little more than $300 before I caught on that he was a lot better than me.

The next day at the horse track someone that watched me play Buddy the night before clued me in on who he was. I felt like a fool on one hand, but happy that he didn't get me for more before I woke up and quit him on the other hand. Johnnyt

This isnt exactly getting hustled, but i did feel like an idiot. I used to work at Cornfed Red's pool hall in Columbus, OH back from 99-01 or so. Of course at that time Corey, Dee Adkins and Chris Bartrum were in there about every night with Shawn Putnam, Scooter and every other good player in the country stopping by from time to time. Well I was 18 and had just started pool and bought my first cue when I was hanging with one of the guys who worked there who actually got me the job. Well, one of his buddies was with him and I asked if he wanted to play a little (since I knew i couldnt beat my friend that had gotten me the job there). Well we started playing and before I knew what was going on I had lost about 9 racks in a row and had only shot twice. After about 45 minutes of getting my ass beat the guy said he had to go and he'd play some with me later. After he left I asked my buddy who in the hell that was and he just laughed and pointed up in the air behind me and said "him". I turned around and there was the $15,000 check Corey had just won on the Camel Tour. After I found that out I got my ass kicked by him all that I could. I probably learned more by basically racking for him for a month or so than I could in 3 years of shooting on my own.

watermelon hustle

this hustler riding down the road came up on man selling melons, stoped and ask if he wanted tro make $100 bucks? sure said the farmer, so the husteler said to count the # of melons he had on the truck, as they finished he informed him to drive down the road to the next filling station, knowing the gang of old guys setting out side would bet on any thing, so he left and rode down to station shortly the truck drove up driver go insine , the hustler shouts $500 from each to the closes # of melons on that truck!!! all takers, with out a doubt he is the winner!!! :D :D :D :D

I was in Myrtle Bach when a guy doing the 3-card monte trick was in the poolroom...I watched for several hands on the side...I swear i saw the card and slapped 50 bucks on top of the card b4 the customer got a chance to pick...well u know the rest...>=( That is a good trick and now i know that there isn't a red card laying there after his initial slight of hand move......

Monte

# 1, there is no way to win at the Monte game.

# 2, the only way to ever win a wager is to catch the accomplice. All these guys have someone in on it with them who will beat any good bets. To set-up monte, the card/pea man shows someone the winner. The accomplice then bets and wins. The next time someone else bets on the winner, the accomplice will bet more and the card/pea man will take the higher. The only way to win is to have more money than the accomplice and bet first. If you can assure no sleight of hand after the exposure, you are guaranteed winner, in which case the game usually will break up and the card/pea man will not accept your wager.... see # 1 there is no way to win at the Monte game.
