getting shafted

I purchased a used KC cue from ebay about a month ago. It was the butt only. It was my first cue. Had to wait a couple to weeks to get a shaft, and another to find the time to go play. Recently discovered that the butt was warped. Asked for a refund but was told that he normally gives refunds, but since it was a month ago, I won't be refunded. Ain't that some shiet.

Ironically, dude posted here before asking for help from a sketchy deal. It's a fairly inexpensive cue, but I just feel like I'm getting shafted. Any suggestions?

who is it?

hate to hear it

A month is a little long to wait to complain. With that ever present hindsight you will check every stick you ever buy closely when you get it now. All you can do is point out that it was just a butt you bought and you had to wait on a shaft before you could play with it. You are kind of at the guy's mercy now. How badly warped is it? How did you test the butt for warp? How was the butt advertised? Dead straight, slight warp, rolls true, or ???

Good luck resolving this to everyone's satisfaction.

I got the cue from nateschoepf. It was just advertised as a really nice cue. and that it was marked used for a couple of days. I should've checked it right when I got it but waited for a shaft and rolled it on a pool table instead. I did mention to him about this. He just stated that since it was a month, he can't accept a return. He didn't sound surprised at all about the warpage.

With a nice little nudge, the cue rocks like a boat. I assume the warp was already there, but I can't prove anything. Can it warp in one month? I kept good care of it. Maybe during shipping? Did he know about it?

Well, regardless, can't prove much, so I'll eat it. Lessoned learned. Glad it wasn't a very expensive cue, but the feeling sucks. Guess I just got myself a break cue. Thanks for the inputs.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll make a note of this name and remember not to do business with him. You didn't get shafted. You got butted.

a little more info please

Will the butt rock back and forth by itself or only when the shaft is attached? Either joint face could be a hair off which is an easy fix. a slight warp to an older butt isn't really uncommon nor is it uncommon for one with a wrap to be a little out of round so that it seems to be warped. Not taking any sides here since I don't know either of you but just trying to cover the bases and be sure the butt is a problem before you give up on it. Check out the things I suggested and even after that I suggest playing with it a bit. I indexed house cues for years when I gambled with house cues and shot pretty fair pool with some sticks that were warped far more than yours is likely to be. Rotate the warp to the top or bottom all the time and it is easily dealt with.

Still trying to help, I hate for your cue buying experience to be a bad one for you.

I still don't understand why people take chances like this. I don't know what you paid but for 125 bucks there's just a ton of quality production cues to be had and they're new. And beleive me KC isn't one of them. Adams, Helmsetter, Viking, Schmelke, Mcdermott, Pechaur there's a few. There's a couple guys on here who if you tell them how much you have will find something for you probably with a new custom cuemaker thrown in as well. Used quality is better than new junk. Buy something else with a 3/8x 10 pin and toss the KC butt and you'll have an extra shaft.

Well, he actually messaged back saying that he will give a return after all once he has paypal funds and that he was unaware of the warp.

I purchased it for about $65 shipped. It's not a horrific sum, but it just felt like I was being cheated. Anyways, going to use Hu's suggestions and check for warpage again. Hope this isn't a false alarm.

I'm glad Nate took it back and the issue is resolved.

To check a handle or shaft for individual straightness, find a flat counter or desk, and get down to eyeball level with the cue. Holding it in place, one hand on the joint and one on the butt, slowly turn it. You will immediately see any change in the gap or lifting of the joint or butt. if both parts are straight but it still sights or rolls crooked, the joint needs to be surfaced or the pin straightened - usually no biggie.

Those KC cues don't play very well anyway in my opinion.

Hey, just saw this, I had no idea it was warped, I made a refund and ended up giving this one and one other away as they were warped and could not feel good about ever selling them, please remember, it was over a month and after he had said everthing was great that he messages me and wants a refund, I didnt know it was warped it was in new condition and I never played with it, anyways, its over, I do wish there would be a some kind of time period set where people don't think your screwing them because you dont want to give a refund. Nate.

never thought the less of you

Nate,

I never had any concerns about your integrity. When someone waits a month to complain red flags go up all over the place for the seller. Did the buyer cook it in a car for weeks? Did it get wet and cooked? Buyers remorse? In this case the buyer had a logical reason that he hadn't paid it much attention, it needed a shaft before he could play with it.

Sometimes the highest road is to eat something we sell and we can never be quite sure why. Under just the wrong circumstances I believe it would be very possible to warp a butt or shaft during the time it was shipped even.

I'm glad you gave the buyer his money back. It was probably just a little bit above and beyond what you were obligated to do but probably the right thing to do in this case. Had you not done so or given a partial refund I would not have felt that you had wronged him.

I've been on the receiving end of a warped cue and can attest to the fact that it's no fun. I've also foolishly sat on a new arrival without taking it to a poolroom to check it the way I normally do. Never again !

In this case, thankfully everything was resolved happily. In any event, nobody is out much money. Remember that McDermott, Viking, and one more I can't remember are now guaranteeing against warpage for life! I like custom cues but that's HUGE! I recently had a very good customer service experience with Schmelke too, after quite a bit of time had passed and they promise to take care of it for me. It wasn't even a situation where very much of the blame could be on them. They want their customers to be happy. These are reasons I like to deal with American companies in addition to our economy and patriotism. Buy American! Looks like I got on a rant:p ...Tom

Nice resolution.

Nice resolution Nate...
IMO most of the people on this forum want to do business with other people on this forum. The more people are willing to stand by what they buy (and sell) the more power this forum has.
It is always nice when one of these threads doesn't disintegrate into a full blown pissin' contest.:)

Not to take sides...but WTF did the OP think he was getting for $65?...a Balabushka?  :D You did a good thing, but imo were under no obligation to refund. If he waited this long (even though he's obviously a newbie), and especially after he told you it was fine, he kinda deserves the 'no refund' option. jmo

On this one, I'm glad the seller decided to refund the buyer's money, no matter how much or little it was, and whether the cue was a cheapie or a nice cue. This kind of service won't be forgotten by those who may consider purchasing a cue from him in the future.

Had the buyer been unable to obtain a refund, nobody would really be happy: not the buyer, who would have been stuck with a crooked butt; not the seller, unless he was a rip-off artist and couldn't care less about his reputation or future sales; the AZers who would have read about this and felt sorry for the buyer. All around it would have stunk. The way it turned out, just about everbody is happy, although the seller would obviously been happier if the KC cue hadn't warped.

BTW, having a warped cue can come in handy... makes for a nice hustlin' cue!

Flex

P.S. One of these days I'll probably plunk down $10 for one of those 4 piece cues with the nylon wrap and loose metal rings on it. Probably buy one of those slip on tips that look awful and install a nice milk dud on it...:D

Yes....I really appreciated that Nate was able to refund the cue. It was almost a month after the sale, but he gave me the benefit of the doubt. Nate's a stand up guy, thanks Nate.

Hey, no problem, no hard feelings I would do business with Q-street anytime, I am glad it worked out, I just thought what if it were me with the warped butt, anyways, everything is cool, and to make it better, the guy I gave these to needed something and they play just fine with his custom shaft, they don't roll straight but he shoots straight.

Merry Christmas to everyone and have a Happy New Year. Nate.

Awesome thread , awesome resoultion. Karma points to you Nate.

I just went thru this myself with a reputable dealer. Had the cue for about a month and while having a new shaft fitted , found the butt to far less than straight , to be nice.

It rolls generally straight but I might have assumed a seller of that quality might have checked it a little better than that on 'not' a cheap cue. ;)

I figure sometimes you win some , some times you lose some.

:)
