I doubt this question can be answered definitively, but...
I have 2 friends that are brothers and both are partial to certain design features in cues. The Gina belongs to one brother, is circa 1965, Ernie says it is one of the first 50 cues he made. The other brother owns the Tad which is current, but Tad was making cues in the mid-60s also and I'm doubting that either cuemaker would say they got the design from the other (and I wouldn't know how to ask). I'm wondering if anyone knows of an earlier cue that shares the common butt treatments? I don't think I've seen a Bushka, Szam, Palmer or Paradise that does, please please correct me if you know of another earlier example.

The Gina is not one of the first 50 Ernie made, the script in the signature is different. The script in the signature on the first 50 cues made was a Gothic Script. I handeled one for a seller around 6 months ago, and I spoke to Ernie a number of times about this very subject. The cue pictured has the script signature used from around 1965 until 1970.

The Tad, I can not date, I have not done a great deal of research on Tad cues.

The other question, about the boxed veneers, to my knowledge were also used on Early Robinson cues, Gus Adams-A little known cue maker from the 1950's and early 1960's, and on cues made in Europe as far back as the turn of the century!!!!

Hi Kevin,

Mr. Varney is correct. You may have already seen this. In the Blue Book #3 in the Tad section, the following exerpt is found: "Some of Tad`s cues of this era (1960s and early 1970s) reflect the influence of other cuemakers such as Ernie Gutierrez, Gene Balner(Palmer) and Doc Fry, all of whom were making cues at that time".

Take care,

Will

the real question here is, What the hell does Ernie do to keep so young and healthy looking? He started making cues before I was born, I have never smoked, drank much, never drugs, eat healthy, stay fit(last 3 years I havent been able to goto the gym :( ) I do everything right and Ernie is in 100X better shape than me, My body is wearing out too fast.

I must have misunderstood what Ernie said when we showed him his cue.

You must have, because even the Blue Book of cue shows that signature to be a later version. Now the butt cap may have been replaced, and the current logo added later or the cue may have been refinished.

If I am wrong I would like to be certain how I am wrong. I do a lot of research and these old Ginas are something I am currently working on.

i'm 238 right now, with my muscles its impossible for me to go below 215-220, but your right being trim is best, i was 260 with Abs 4 years ago, but even though I had low body fat the weight muscle is still hard to carry.

far as the what came first, the chicken or the egg in my answere, Ernie did show me his very first cue he ever made. I have some of his over the top work and alot of Tads, both guys are in my collection strong meaning % of the value of collection. Cue-Tec is #1 incase anyone is wondering.

i'm so rusty i don't even buy green bananas anymore. got a 1 pack now instead of the 6 i used to carry, it's a lot easier that way.

i have heard that tad was the first box maker, but i can't say that my source was an expert.

Thanks for the confidents man:o You hurt my feelings! Ha Ha!!:D

ha, nothing against you buddy... but you have to admit that hearing it straight out of ernie's mouth would warrant enough merit to make you wonder if what's written in the book is just on paper or in stone... :)

you have my confidence with this, cnc on the other hand...:p

I think Mrs. Ernie has something to do with it. Plus the tailored Armani's

i think its the speedbikes... after all, time depends on the rate at which you travel.

I had a bunch of Ginacues at one time and have a question. The two fancy ones that I had had GINACUE stamped in a very thin silver ring. I took them and showed them to Ernie and he stated that they were very early cues.

Does anyone know how early they were. I think I remember him stating that he used the thin silver ring for a very short time period and then went to the white ring.

Thanks!!

Russ....

No problem. Next time Ernie, that Gina and myself are in the same room I'll be sure to ask him and I'll let you know.
