Gina or Tad ??? Which came first ???

But To The Point

We refer to this design characteristic as "veneer boxed butt w/ one center inlay". Can anyone think of (or better show me) another cuemaker beside Ernie that was making sicks with this design mid-1960s or before?

Hi Kevin,

Mr. Varney is correct. You may have already seen this. In the Blue Book #3 in the Tad section, the following exerpt is found: "Some of Tad`s cues of this era (1960s and early 1970s) reflect the influence of other cuemakers such as Ernie Gutierrez, Gene Balner(Palmer) and Doc Fry, all of whom were making cues at that time".

Take care,

Will

The two cues I'm showing are a bit unfair as the Tad is so much later, but I know there are much earlier examples of Tads with the "Veneer boxed butt with one inlay" characteristic. It sounds as though there won't be an earlier Tad found, I'm wondering if there is a cue that predates Ernie with those characteristics. Got one? (man would I like to see your collections).

the real question here is, What the hell does Ernie do to keep so young and healthy looking? He started making cues before I was born, I have never smoked, drank much, never drugs, eat healthy, stay fit(last 3 years I havent been able to goto the gym :( ) I do everything right and Ernie is in 100X better shape than me, My body is wearing out too fast.

Ernie has Lucy! That's his secret youth elixir.

The Gina is not one of the first 50 Ernie made, the script in the signature is different. The script in the signature on the first 50 cues made was a Gothic Script. I handeled one for a seller around 6 months ago, and I spoke to Ernie a number of times about this very subject. The cue pictured has the script signature used from around 1965 until 1970.

The Tad, I can not date, I have not done a great deal of research on Tad cues.

The other question, about the boxed veneers, to my knowledge were also used on Early Robinson cues, Gus Adams-A little known cue maker from the 1950's and early 1960's, and on cues made in Europe as far back as the turn of the century!!!!

Ernie told me that he used the script and block logos during the same time period. I'll attach a couple of photos to a new post.

I have a 1968 Ginacue, with a letter of authenticity from Ernie, with the block logo.

Yep, Ernie's daughter.
If you see that old video of the 1P challenge match between Danny DiLiberto and Ronnie Allen, Ernie and Gina are sitting ringside.

The Block Logo was used from the Mid-60 until the 1970's as I said above. The Gothic Script logo was only used on his earliest cues which were made before 1965.

Here is a cue that is one of three made iot was made in 1967 for a famous Seattle Player Tacoma Whitey, the cue has five original shafts.

Since these photo's were taken the cue has been refinished by Ernie, I will post photo's of the refinish later.

I know it is a rather old thread but I thought I'd bring it up again as I think there still is A LOT of knowledge about Gina cues and most of that could be shared here.

Craig,

I'd like to ask you two things: on the first picture you posted it seems as if the steel joint is engraved or something... Could that be (I've never heard of any Gina with that but I thought I'll ask)... The second thing is that you mentioned that you'll post pictures of that Gina after the refinish... I wonder if you still have those pics and if you were to share it here :)

One last thing: the original question of this thread is great, I've been thinking about it for quite some time but had not asked it yet.

I can tell you, at least circa 1997/8ish. On of my partners and I were staying in the LOW BUDGET Thunderbird Motel, which was like $79 a WEEK. We had lost the credit card and were low on cash so that's where we ended up. We were in town for the BCA trade show.

We went to the front counter on the first day of the show to tell the desk we were expecting a package from Germany. The desk clerk asked me where I go my tie, which was a handpainted one from Germany with a billiard theme on it. She said her father would like it. I asked if her father played pool and she said he makes cues. I asked which cues and she said Ginacues.

She said, "I am Gina" and offered to introduce me to her father at the show. As things turned out I didn't get to meet Ernie on that trip though. I did meet him later at another event.

At that time she was a little chunky, about 35ish I'd say, and very nice. Quite shocking though to have met the famous Gina working as a desk clerk at low budget motel on the Strip.
