Gold Crown Questions

I purchased a 8 ft Gold Crown II for a steal. Original owner and only recovered once. It still had the og plastic skirts to hide the ball return. Table is in great shape but I have a few questions. The table is dissembled in my garage until i get it setup and recovered next week. The table was in a lake house so 2 of the feet bronze feet are very badly pitted and corroded due the the feet getting wet. Also all the t rail bolts and other nuts and bolts are rusted.

1. How can i clean up the feet. Two are really bad oxidized with green and black covering over half of it. Should I just lightly sand it down with some 500 or 800 grit to remove the majority of the corrosion then clear it to stop further damage. Any thing to clean them with? Also two of the threaded studs are seized in those 2 legs as well. I was thinking about getting some rust perpetrator to help loosen it up but i was unsure if this would hurt the finish on ever more on the feet. I know i need to get them lose to help level the table once its reassembled.

2. Since the table is disassembled should I remove all the t rail bolts and sand them down and spray paint them to stop them from rusting any more. I was thinking about spraying the black. SHould I do this for all the exposed bolts in the base and leg assembly as well.

3. The rubber looks to be in great shape. I carefully removed all the staples from all 6 rails in prep for the recovering. Can someone please explain to me the K55 vs superspeed rails. I tried reading on here but thier is jus some much info I wasnt sure what was right and wrong. Is there no direct replacement for the Brunswick monarch superspeed cushions that are on the table now? I cant just remove the current superspeed and install new rubber that will have the same reail height and depth? Or are people just converting over the Artemis k-55 because is a superior cushion?

4. Its the EI model. Whats that mean?

Not a 2.

"2 of the feet bronze feet" if it has Bronze feet it is not a II it is a III. Unless someone switched them out.

I had the greatest success using cleaning product called "Bar Keepers Friend"

I shake some on a damp cloth so that it is like a paste and rub it into the oxidation. It really does a good job on the copper feet of my GC.

About your Gold Crown, I would really like to see it, please post some pictures if you can.

I have a GCII that sounds very similar to yours. When Glen did my table he was sure that I had a GCIII base (with the copper plated feet an copper plated ball return trim) with a GC II top an skirts.

Mine also has a Brunswick label on the stringer stating Gold Crown II table Mod E1. Glen had never heard of that model either, and I am sure he must have worked on thousands of GC's.

It is entirely possible that the person bought the table from could have purchased it from a pool room where they had both types of tables and mixed them.

Anyway it is a great playing table, and a good conversation piece because of it's uniqueness. I sometimes call it a GC 2.5

T rails on a GC....?
And no, there is no replacement for the old cushions. Modifications to the rail will need to be done to install today's cushions correctly.

Pictures of the rails and parts in question will help.

Do yourself a favor and just go buy new hardware for everything before you get it put together. Also run a tap through the rail inserts to clean out any junk that is in them. After that take some high pressure air and blow out the cavity. You can then shoot some wd-40 or lube of choice in there.

As far as the feet go, there is a threaded cup that is in the leg pedestal. It is only held in place by a screw or 2. Take the foot off, then pull the screws that way you can try to separate the threaded cup and the threaded rod away from the table.

The cushion issue is as Rob said before. The OLD supper speed cushions are not the same as the K55 today. They are somewhat close, but are not a direct replacement. To get the table to play correctly and keep the playing surface of the table right the rails need to be re-cut.

thanks for the answers. ill post some pics in the am. Just got home from a 14 hiur work day.

Pics of the table broken down.

The feet are after i cleaned them with brasso, and and combination of vinegar floor and salt paste. I forgot to take a before pic. The foot on the left is the best looking of the 4 and the right is the worst. The right one still shows alot of black oxidization. Plus the threaded stud is seized up.

As you can see all the hardware under the table is rusted to some degree. Some worst then others. Since the table is disassembled should I now take the time to remove all the hardware and sand it, prime, it and paint it. Iwas thinking jsut using some rustolem spray paint and shoot from flat black on all the hardware. The bottom pic is the tbolt for the rail.

The label. Where would the serial number on the frame be located? Anyone know what the EI stands for? Any way to clean the castings? They have some small pitting on them.

If it was my table I would completely disassemble it and take all of the steel parts in to have them chemically stripped. If you check with body shops or automotive restoration shops in your area they can steer you in the right direction, they can be tricky to locate but they exist. The other option is to replace what you can find for it, I dont know how much good hardware is out there. Was this table near saltwater or under fresh water maybe?? I cant believe how rusty the hardware is.

I took my casting to a local business and had them copper coated. Then I finished them with about 10 coats of spray urethane and they look as good today as the day I finished them ten years ago.

Bar Keepers Friend is the real deal. Here is before, half a castings and after one full cleaning of a casting. After one cleaning is has enough shine to see a blurry reflection of me taking the pic. 2.97 at Lowes for a 26oz bottle

Did anyone notice the like new condition those rails are in. I have never seen gold crown 2 rails that nice before. Those cushions and glue still look new. Nice find!

Is that unusual? Thats what mine look like even though I had them replaced with Artemis? Still have the old ones FWIW.

Sorry, I am used to seeing ones in a pool room. Cushion control strip discolored with some dry rot and rails stapled out.
