I am not a total newbie. Played when I was in my teens at the pool hall but never seriously. Getting a table for my home and want to learn to play a decent game of pool. Ideas on proper technique and strategy would be good.

If you are going to go that route, Robert Byrne is probably the best way to go.

Spending time with a qualified instructor will make the whole learning process much easier.

thanks johnny, very glad you like it, someone stole mine so I got to get a new one myself lol. Joels a wonderful guy to deal with and always fair.

I'll second all of the suggestions above.

I started with Byrne's book and still think it's one of the finest. Capelle's Play Your Best Pool is also worth a look.

For the price of one new book you could probably get two or three used books.

I'm in a very similiar situation. Around two years ago got a table in my basement, after having played very little since college.

I agree with those who suggest taking a lesson or two to nip any bad habits in the bud.

I have found all of the Phil Capelle books very helpful. (Play Your Best Pool, Play Your Best 9 ball, etc).

99 Critical Shots, Mastering Pool, Bob Byrne's Standard Book of Pool and Billiards, Dr. Dave's book for the color illustrations.

I would recommend that you start with the DVD "Play Better Pool: Mastering the Basics Volume I." Randy Goettlicher and Scott Lee

You can't learn proper stroke technique from a book.

Without a doubt the best choice for a newcomer with their own pool table.

I'd say the best investment though, would be to ask one of the traveling trainers for a session at your house. It was two of my best investments. I worked with Scott Lee and Jerry Briesath.

IMHO books are OK, DVD are better. As you see what is being talked about being demonstrated.

Check this out. Good stuff for Beginners of ALL AGES!

I was thinking of books, but now that you mention it, the information in this DVD is better than just about anything I've ever read in any book.
