Hey, i'm looking in buying a cue for roughly 300 give or take preferrably under.

Which cues do you guys prefer and what are the pros and cons of such choices?

Thank you for any inputs!

Get a dale perry cue off ebay and spend the rest of the 300 on lessons.

I always suggest the McDermott with the G-core shaft. Some of the G series cues are under 300 bucks .. they aren't fancy, but they have the G core LD shaft and McD has a solid product with a great warranty.

And yes, you could get a DP ebay cue, which isn't a horrible option ... and then spend the rest of your money on lessons. I will never belittle the option of spending less on your cue and more on your lessons, because that's a great idea. Get your foundation down pat with lessons, which you can do with any cue. I guess it depends if you are looking for an entry level cue with lessons if you are at the completely entry level.... or at the point where you have had some instruction and are looking to slighty upgrade the cue you have. The answer is up to you!

Nah, i'm not looking for any lessons as I just want a decent cue to play with.

Would it be better to get some low end Lucasis/Joss etc..
Though I'm not a fan of the butt designs for the McDermotts around 300.

Or are there any cues that have similar designs as Schons? Their wood looks really nice.

Lots of options in and below your price range, particularly the HL, NA, and NR series. Aged shaft woods, premium tips and ferrules, and endorsed by players like John Schmidt, Kelly Fisher, and Xiao-Ting Pan.

Olney. 'nuf said. Well-built cue and monster player. Well-balanced with firm hit. Contact "Daniel" on this forum - he can likely get you one for around that price.

Good suggestion.

Another option, believe it or not....is the Cuetec R360. People always laugh when they hear Cuetec, but the R360 shaft actually hits pretty well for the price point. It's definitely a good entry option if you want low deflection.

Thanks guys.

So i've decided to go down the McDermott line as that seems like a safe bet with excellent warranty.

My choices are between
D6-06 - 300 ~
G303 - 316 ~ (2x2 Case)
M43A Tuscon - 233 ~
G224C - 286 ~ (2x2 Case)
M431 ~ 166

I was wondering what exactly am I paying for as most of them (except the last) are roughly the same price. Am I just paying for the design between the first four?

Bob Frey sneakys can come up around 300-400,
and also a plain jane dave jacoby cue
If you want the best playing cue for your money, simply follow this man's advice.

If you want an OK playing cue that looks a bit fancy, go with one of the McDemmots that you listed.

I speak from experience having owned a couple of McDermotts and a Bob Frey SP.

I've had several good players who have shot a few shots with my Frey SP tell me... if you ever want to sell that cue, let me know. :thumbup2:

GL with your decision.

For $300 you have a lot of options. I personally like a plain Mezz or Joss at that price.

If I were in your shoes I would post on the buy/sell forum that you are interested in a cue for $300. You will get a lot of replies with all sorts of different sticks

I agree. I would definitely see what sellers have here before you buy a new cue. I am sure you can buy a gently used cue in great shape here that retailed for $500-$600.

The only problem with that is you may not get the cue. I "bought" a cue from a well respected member here once. Three years and zero cues later, I've kind of written it off.

If it were me, and it was about three months ago, I would buy a plain jane Joss. They're American made, very solid hit, and very consistent. Probably the best bang for your buck; I love the way mine plays.

You can get wrapless for $220: http://www.pooldawg.com/product/joss-jossp-sneaky-pete-pool-cue

Or Irish Linen for $212: http://www.pooldawg.com/product/joss-jos01-maple-with-ebony-circles-pool-cue-stick

Take the extra $80 and take your girl out to dinner. ;)

I haven't had any problems buying from members on this site. You can always get a middle man to collect the cash and check the cue before the transaction is complete if you need peace of mind.

I agree with you comments about Joss. They are a well made cue. I have owned 3 and loved each one.

escrow...escrow..escrow... you can find the escrow service in the wanted section:

your budget is in on the low end so don't expect much in terms on cosmetics..but you can definitely find a good playing cue at that price:

1) bob frey sneaky pete

2) Mezz ec-7 series

3) Predator sneaky petes...

4) Low deflection shaft with a beginner model butt: Mcdermott, Lucasi, Viking, Huebler, etc.

I have a Mezz ZZSP I will sell for $300 shipped in the conus. It is a pretty bad ass cue. Before this cue, I had not tried Mezz, but I am very impressed. I like the Mezz ld shaft (WD700) more than any of the other LD shafts I've tried (tried ferruless, predator, ob, and tiger). The Mezz shaft is very solid and feels more like a regular maple but with the low deflection. Pics of the cue can be seen here:

If you aren't in love with this one, no worries. I would still recommend you try Mezz out. There are a couple of them for sale on the forum. All the people who have tried mine love it. I think as far as production cues, Mezz is knocking it out of the park.

I have a Pechauer-solid cue and American made. There are several choices in that price range. They grow and cut their own wood and make just about all the parts themselves.

Al Romero Sneakys Play Good

I bought a Romero sneaky from Trav D that plays nice. I haven't seen any for sale lately, but you could do a search. I prefer cues that play well, and Trav is a great guy to buy from as are all the people on this forum that I've done business with. I just bought a case from poolhustler and sent him a personal check as payment. No problems there either, and another great guy to deal with.

good suggestions, pretty much what i would recommend as well.. would consider a josey sneaky too, he currently has 1 or 2 for sale below your price point..

if you want to save some $$ get a mcdermott at $100++. if not a joss at around $200. you can get better deals in the for/sale forums too, from more reputable sellers.
