I have an idea for the DCC, and want to know a good length for an ahead set (for 9 ball)? Is 15 ahead too long? Is 10 ahead good? I know the caliber of competition at the Derby, and I'm looking for something that will attract "players" that wanna steal from a D player like me! I think something shorter (like a race to 7) may not be worth my donation. :o

A "good number for an ahead set"???

In my case, it had better be one :sorry::grin::grin::grin:!!!

Oh yeah, I'll still need the five and the break!!!

you reading my mind or what? I found an Orange Crush shirt, and thought I'd have OFFERING THE ------ ----- TO ANYONE screenprinted on it (the Orange Crush part is already on the front). Then have the $$$$ amount and set on the back.....

It all depends on how much you want to win or lose. All an ahead set is that means you are playing for so much a game and you are locking up so many games so that someone can't just get a few games ahead and quit.

Depends on the skill differences of the 2 players. If you have someone who can string 5 racks..... 5 ahead is not enough. If the gap is small, it comes down to an endurance test. Who can play the best the longest. How do they play?

with the weight I'm offering, there will me a large number (say 98% of everyone there) of folks there that WILL win in 15 games or less going 10 ahead (it's A LOT of weight, and I'm THAT bad). lol

If you are sure that is the way it will go, figure that 15 ahead will take 23-25 games played or about an hour and a half to 2 hours depending on the speed of play.
I have one question though... if you are "that bad".... why are you giving weight???? :grin-square:

I dunno man.. ahead sets get done quickly when it's lopsided and drag on more and more when the players are equal..

might try five ahead ... first guy to catch a gear wins

Or a few games behind and quit.

Cuz I thought the shirt was cool....and offering the Orange Crush TO ANYONE at the DCC seems somewhat suicidal....I dunno!?

I figure if someone like Bartram were to jump on my shirt offer, and I had set it at 10 ahead - I lose 10 - zip giving him the 5 and the breaks, but I'd get a game....

I don't understand what you are trying to do here (wink wink). I don't like ahead sets myself, but 8 or 10 ahead sounds about right, except going that high might also dictate the dollars that have to be involved. Meaning that I wouldn't play 10 ahead for less than 500 dollars a set. Are you willing to put up that much, or more???

And the only ones to take you up on that are going to 'clock you' or will be world beaters.

I said I would FULLY DISCLOSE the offer on the back of the shirt, just trying to come up with a good number....I think 10 ahead would work well. I probably shouldn't say the wager here, since my PM mailbox would fill up WAY too quickly...lol. BTW, the world-beaters are the goal ;)

Is this pools version of the economic stimulous package? If so, I want in. I really don't know how to answer your question since I really don't understand what you're plan is but in general I wish people would just stick to races and lengthen them according to the bet. In the phillipines i saw races as long as 35 but that way they play 5 or 6 hours and it's over. Ahead sets can take way too long and then it's about who can stay awake longer instead of pool.

there ya go - a stimulous package...I like that! I like to play Mike. I may not be very good, but the better my opponent is, the more I enjoy the game. I did too much watching last year and not enough playing (and I regretted it a little driving home through all that ICE). Hopefully my plan will "flip the script" as they say.

oh, and if my opponent is REALLY GOOD - how long could it take getting the 5 and the breaks???

If you want to play at DCC, I'll play you.

What kind of level are you approximately at?

Why give up ridicilous weight to a pro when you can gamble an amateur either give or get small weight and have chance to win money?

If you really are an amateur giving up that spot to pros even a 15 ahead won't take that long and you'll get plenty of takers if it's for any decent amount of money. Please be sure to pencil me in.
