Grady in Betmore's Basement

Yesterday Grady Mathews was in Indy and made a visit to Williebetmore's basement for a clinic / get together. I arrived late and missed most of Grady's presentation but was able to grab some pictures.

After the basement session we all went to Chalkies a room on the north side of Indy. Grady played one pocket and straight pool with everyone and was very funny and full of great tips and lessons.

I met some fellow AZ'ers and learned alot about one hole. It was a great time. Best part was Grady coaching me to a victory over himself :D A true gentleman. One pocket is easy when you make a ball on the break and have a legend coaching you. :D

I would like to thank Williebetmore for setting this up and for the invite. Willie is one of the best and is a great example of the caliber of people that you find in this game.

There was also another pool icon present. Another great and all around class act. I'll see if you can pick them out. Hint: The prettiest person in the room....no not you Willie.

Grady is a legend and an all time great in the pool world. I thought about everything he has done in and for the game and really was impressed. I mean we all know who he is but just look at everything he has done.

Played and gambled all over the world for many years at the highest level.
Promoted and ran many significant tournaments
Authored numerous books and articles
Teaches and helps promote the game all over the country
The many great commentaries for Accu Stats
And on and on......

Thank you Grady. For today and for everything you do and have done for the game.

Hopefully Willie will give us a full break down of the days events. Till then here are some pictures.

Grady in Betmore's Basement. Yes he made it out. The pit under the table was closed for renovations.

These were shot at Chalkies. Nicest room in Indy.

Great post, thanks for sharing!!!!!

By the way, Grady will be at my pool room, Full Splice Billiards in Lakewood, Washington this month on April 21st and possible the 22nd for lessons. If any Az members are in the area and want to attend contact me, Grady's presentation is limited to the first 50 people and lessons are limited to only 10 people.

Thanks and have a great night!!!

The MAN is beyond belief a TRUE LEGEND. He hasnt really been shown ALL the respect he has earned, maybe someday those in the position to do so will see just how great a person and contributor to the sport he really is and honor him in a way becoming such a great man.

Great pics and write-up. I can't believe Betmore managed to lure Jeanette into his cellar when there was all those witnesses around to spoil his fun ;-)

And that wouldn't be Jim "Too-Tall" Eales skulking in the background there would it?

Yes. I was fortunate enough to be there. Learned a few kicks & banks. Met some very nice people: Jim, Dana, Justin, Brendt, Jeanette, Jeff, and, of course, Grady.

Williebetmore's basement is the nicest place to play in Indy, but if you can't play there, Chalkie's is not a bad second choice.

I wish to also thank Don & his wife for organizing the event and the invitation. It beat working all hollow.

Great photos and what a basement! I'm envious Williebetmore.

One question, why the name tags in the basement? Looks like a convention.

That looked like it was a lot of fun. With that crew I am surprised Jeanette made it out unscathed.

Thanks for the story and pictures! It looks like everyone had a great time! The only time I ever met Grady was at the DCC 2006 and I had a great time listening, talking and watching him.

Obvious sharking technique to have such intimidating trophies on display.

LMAO! I'm surprised Grady could even make a bridge in that kind of environment!

Willie, show some sportsmanship man!

vERY NICE PICTURES. Jeanette looks better than ever. And Grady, well he even looks a little younger in those photos that were taken in Williebetmore's basement.

I was just wondering where Breakup was.

Looks like a nice room.

OK, I'm jealous! That looks like a fun time had by all. Grady is so knowledgeable and has so many great stories. And he's a lot of fun to be around. Kudos to Willie for hosting it and JCIN for the pics.

JA,
Well....please don't think us impolite; we thought of inviting Breakup (sort of as a charity gesture); but the continuous snorting, farting, coughing, mumbling, drooling would have been a distraction to the real pool players attending. In addition, I have only the 2 large refrigerators in my humble abode...nowhere near enough capacity for the quantity of beer he usually consumes in a typical afternoon.

I must also mention that small children were present; and the Hannibal Lecter mask he must wear when the caretakers take him "out" can be quite disturbing to young minds.

BK,
While I know all of the attendee's; they do NOT know each other. I thought it was easier to have nametags so people would not be embarrassed about forgetting someone's name; and also so it would be easier to associate the person, name, and screenname.

This is the SAME reason we REALLY want everyone in the AZB room at DCC to wear their nametags - it definitely helps improve the sense of collegiality.

AD,
No "luring" was necessary; she is a TRUE student of the game, and re-arranged her entire schedule to attend. There is a lesson there somewhere for us.

breakdown,
You have a keen eye (good luck with the other one, I know that eating with a real fork can be a biatch).

That little plastic trophy (actual cost = $0.50) is the "Betmore Cup." I and a friend had a weekly match, with the winner keeping possession of the prestigious trophy for the week (white stick-on label, hand lettered with a Sharpie).

I would have put it up for our grudge match at DCC; but I was afraid you would steal it (doubling the size of your bankroll) and use the proceeds to purchase more mind-altering substances.

K-man,
She may have been a bit worried about that - she brought her mother as a chaperone and her children as backups. Fortunately, all of the AZB'ers behaved as perfect gentlemen - one more good reason breakup was not invited.
