Grady update...

I speak for the sport as well...just in a different way. His attitude is what keeps our sport in the "gutter" of the sports world. I respect your opinions but completely disagree 100%.

We havent run off any other pros since I have been on here...lurking or posting...but he has been "run off" of numerous boards. Ask yourself why.

How about Thorston Hohmann? ... if I remember correctly.

Anyone with any level of sensitivity SHOULD have been able to see that emotions were running high and needed a chance to cool down. But you and several others feel it was necessary to jump in and make the situation worse. Why not just leave his threads/posts alone? Why was it necessary to do Grady, or anyone, harm? Are you happy now? Have you caused your quota of harm? Do you feel powerful now?

I can't make sense of it. People don't usually treat each other like that in person. In person they can see the emotions taking control of the intellect and they let things cool off, unless they just like to fight.

The advancement of pool sometimes means controlling the urge to call out the stars and legends of our sport and to allow celebrity to take it's natural course.

Eccentric behavior is most times ignored by those who know better. Celebrity behavior is most times ignored by those that know better. If one feels as though another is an attention hog, why buy into that and give them what they want? Must we always express our opinions, or is it possible to become lurkers at times so as to help preserve the future of our sport by not highlighting the negatives?

Is celebrity a license to do whatever you are inclined to do or say? Of course not. But, I believe we need to support and promote the legends and stars of this sport with equal ferocity as is the case when we attack them.

My comments are directed to no one in particular, and I am not protecting any legend or star of this sport in particular. They can speak for themselves. I speak for the sport.

Me too. Grady surely knows pool, but he never posted about the game itself, and only rarely anymore chimed in with stories about pool culture. He also developed that absolutely infuriating habit of posting a thread to say something, and instead of participating in the thread, posting another thread about how he got a negative response to the first one. He doesn't want to discuss issues, he wants to preach his view and have it accepted as gospel. This is supported by the comment on his blog about how he'll tell the full story of why Charlie Williams is so dangerous now that he's on his own blog and can block negative responses. There's no room in his mind for others' viewpoints.

Blackjack, on the other hand, is both helpful and insightful in pool-related threads, and has good communication skills and is reasonable when involved in the more debate-like threads. He is and has always been an asset to the online pool community.

I never left the forum. I gave myself a time out, a breather, and I am staying away from the threads that turn into trainwrecks. I was out of town at a tournament this weekend, so I didn't post very much. I had a blast.

FWIW, I have read several posts that said that I have left this forum many times only to return. That is complete BS. The truth is that I left this forum only one time - for a 3 month period in 2005 because I was upset about some very disrespectful comments that were directed at Grady Mathews (imagaine that!). I will continue to post here, but as far as giving my opinion on certain subjects that many find informative... sorry, its not going to happen anymore. I don't think I have to explain why. I've got better, more positive things I can do with my time.

This used to be a great place to share ideas and to share our thoughts. Nowadays it is quite common to be attacked for posting your personal point of view. I'm not sure why it is allowed to be that way, it just is. Until that changes, my particpation will be extremely subdued compared to before.

Glad you're back. Or better yet, glad you didn't leave.
Sorry it will only be 1/2 speed.

I want to say something about this forum. The reason I originally came here was for gathering more info on the pro players. That's been my main hobby since I was 11. I have grew to also enjoy just as much getting to know my fellow posters here. I know many of your personalities.
But I also don't like how this board is degenerating into a less civil place.

Here's an example...The only other sport I ever did was boxing. I had 39 amateur fights as a lightheavywieght and later, as a crusierweight. I really enjoyed fighting. At least as much as I love pool. But, I don't post on the boxing forums because go take a peek at how they post there. 9 posts out of 10 is an insult, slur, cussing, vulgarities, etc. It didn't start that way, it EVOLVED that way because the decent posters got tired of the crude and abrasive way that many people seem to communicate. One by one, they dropped out. It's not worth the fight. I know that because my buddies that did post there also quit. Not because we're better than that or goody 2 shoes, but, we're older now with responsibilites to our families and we've grown up. Matured. Learned to talk. Held back violent urges. Been respectful.

Our board is still in good shape here. But, there are "birthpangs" and jolts far more often now . I've lurked here since it started and began posting in 2003. And other pro players have been run off. Seems like a few very vocal people here enjoy agitating a little too much. Keyboard bullies who aren't all that vocal one on one in an alley or parking lot.

I can't make everyone get along and I certainly don't expect for us all to agree on everything. I personally have always been treated great here by everyone, even Harold :D, who by the way, is still my friend who I respect a lot. But I have seen others vilified here and for what? Their wording upset somebody. Whoopteedo! Like Williebetmore said, can't there be respectful disagreement? He also said "rational discourse" but that's expecting way too much from some others here. They don't have it in them.

Some people, myself included, were simply tired of the sniffling, whining, and bickering by Mr. Matthews. I applaud him for what he has done in the past, but his actions on this board were often times childish at best and more often ridiculous. Some of us want pool to advance forward.

I believe that it is our right to question these, so called, promoters of billiards when we believe that they are in the wrong. Just because someone is a champion, doesnt mean they are doing the right thing for pool. I honestly believe that a lot of the people who backed up Grady on his posts were either starstruck, in denial, or scared to speak the truth to a legend.

I am not scared to say what I believe is right and I believe that the actions of Grady and many others are doing for the advancement of our game. I also believe that everyone else has their own opinions and that they may differ from mine...I respect that...however, Grady did not and that is the main cause of this situation. He was simply unable to grasp the reality of the situation.

I will miss Grady's stories about the road and all of that...but ask yourself this question...When was the last time Grady told a real good story on here?

Ask yourself these questions as well...Why was Grady using our board (a public message board for fans) to bicker? Was he trying to gain support for his cause? Ask the same question about all of the pros and promoters on here.

I love that they are here and I want them to all stay..but this is a public forum designed for fans of pool. Whenever a big name player or promoter or even cuemaker uses a site like this they must expect a certain amount of critiscm. I will be damned if I am going to sit by and kiss peoples if I disagree with them just because they are a legend. I am not starstruck...I am a just a guy who likes pool and would love to see it advance. If you post something opinionated on this forum..be ready to accept some criticism. I have taken a bunch myself and I will take some more....especially for this post.

PS: sorry for the spelling...remember, I teach Social Studies not English.

PSS: Im on my planning period Terry!!!! LOL Are you on lunch break?

PSSS: Good post Terry, I respect your opinion.

You conspired to bully him off the board and you knew that's what you were doing.

I know some guys that tell great stories and who can and do teach me and others a lot about pool. I love to hang around them when they are storytelling or expounding about the game and how to play it. I hate when they get petty and let their emotions get out of hand but that's a PART of who they are. Whey they get to spoutin off, get negative about stuff and let their "assholiness" start showin, I just move off and go shoot some pool.

I don't embarass them in front of their other friends because I don't like one facet of their personality. I leave them be and try to remember them as being generally good people who have some traits that I don't particularily like.

You say you respect Grady but I've not seen respect from you. You certaily don't have enough respect to just keep you mouth shut about a part of the guys personality that bugged you. You had to lay into him in public and flex your muscles. You appear to be a bully and a braggert and a name dropper... (Buddy and I play pool together.. he's my friend, etc.)

I'd much rather have Grady here than you. I could walk away from his faults when they get to be too much and remember him for the help he has given many of us and for the good he has done for pool in general. You, on the other hand.... are nothing but expendable... I don't see you giving to the game. You're just another young cock-on-the-walk makeing noise.

That's why Grady left? Wow. That sucks. The night that those two played I received a call from a friend who was there. He told me, that night - during the match, that there was business and that, based on the information he knew, he had his bets made. Maybe he was given poor information and just got lucky on the outcome of his bets, but he did win the money. Seriously though. Who cares? Why would Grady leave the forum because of people talking about that - whether it's true or not? There are a bunch of people who DO think that game wasn't on the square. People are going to think and say what they want whether it's on a forum, in their house, on the phone or in the pool room. Is he going to leave the pool room for good and quit using the telephone too? :)

Great post, Terry. I completely agree with you. Prior to the IPT I had never really had any major disagreements with anybody online. It was a topic I felt strongly about, and so did many others that shared opposing views. I try my best to be respectful with everybody I communicate with here, sometimes I can lose it - hey I'm human and I have faults. Ask anybody that has met me at a tournament or at a pool hall - I am not confrontational or nasty at all. Its just not in my my nature to be that way.

I do have my limits when it comes to the jabs and pot shots that I receive here. It is one thing to respectfiully disagree with somebody on principle, and it is something completely different to lash out against somebody for the mere sport of it. That is where I believe the line should be drawn.

I had a real good time posting on these forums from 1996-2004. Since then a lot of things have changed. Perhaps the forums of 2007 is not the place for Grady Mathews, perhaps its not the place for me anymore. There seems to be this propensity these days for pitting one side against the other in all of these issues. I have no interest in winning any kind of "war" with anybody.

If any of you wants to fight in an internet war, go to RSB and fight with Fast Larry and Debra. That crap has been going on for 5 years with absolutely no end in sight. Neither of them can remember what started it all or what forum it started on or when. Perhaps if you like fighting and arguing you can pick a side and stay over there and act stupid. This forum is reserved for mature individuals to express ideas in a respectful environment about the game of pool. If you're not willing to respect that, the other members, the pro players, etc, then go somewhere else and ruin their atmosphere and leave the rest of us alone. For those of us that have been with this forum since pre-2003, I believe we have earned the right to say what I just said.

One of the best posts ever by one of AZB top 10 posters (in my opinion).

Bomber, here's my take on what Jim said. As an older person (I'm 48) I saw you as jumping on Grady also. Not because he's my friend do I say that, because I consider you my friend as well. You and I have PMed each other, given rep points to each other and generally agree on lots of stuff here. But you did the same thing, albeit more innocently, to Freddy Bentivegna. He even told you as much, but, Fred's a great, great guy who really harbors you no ill will. Grady took everything to heart. Was he right in how he went about venting his complaints? Well, it's not how you or I would have done it. But it's over now. He's gone, at least for now.

You have to ask yourself why so many older posters here stuck up for Grady, even when he looked so wrong. What do we know that others don't? How can we overlook his shortcomings (that we ALL have, by the way) and keep to the high road?
Plus, something else to think about. What if everyone piled on you like they did to Grady? How would you feel or how would I feel if it were me?

Aaron, you are much respected here (look at all them greenies!:) ), but there's a wonderful saying from the bible..."To whom much has been given, much will be required." To disagree is one thing, to hammer over and over and over at every chance is another. An opinion once expressed is there for all to persuse. Said over and over, ever more strongly, can give the impression that it's done for other reasons or motives.

I hope that we're still cool. This is just some constructive critisism. You gave some to Grady and now, here's some back. :)
And one more thing.
This is probably YOUR first real test as a poster. How YOU respond to the "hot seat" will be very revealling about you and what you're really like.

That we disagree on a topic doesn't mean we can't still agree on others. This is POOL TALK, not life and death.Don't take any of this PERSONALLY. You didn't want Grady to, so don't you either.
Peace is a good thing, by the way.

Are we seeing respect from you now?

Get over yourself........
This dude didnt run Grady off ...Grady run himself off... and really, where were the positive contributions form ole GM over the last..um..LOOOOOOOOOOng time....

Grady has a habit of ditching news groups..read his blog..he says it there.

BTW ..if he dumped one BB over a tourney thread shorlty before Katrina, how could he have not been there in over 4 years..........

I've been following all of the Grady threads and I do not think Bomber was conspiring about anything. When one posts online, you are at peace with the fact people will take you for what you write, and respond based on your content and delivery.

I'm one of the BIGGEST Grady fans anywhere; however, some of his posts on here remind me of a cry baby. I happen to agree with what he's saying, mind you, but post like a man...not someone crying about how life's unfair. When you do those things, you better put on your bulletproof vest because you're going to receive an onslaught of posts stating such. That's the purpose of bulletin boards.

Some people may be harsh, but if Grady would have positioned himself like a professional instead of downing the UPA, Charlie, Randy and others (maybe presenting a solution instead of screaming about a problem), the responses might have been different.

All I'm saying is many people visit this forum - some pros, some not. Should you treat someone differently because he/she is a pro? That's something to be discussed. Whether or not Bomber and some others were giving Grady a hard time...well, Grady put himself in that position by dropping his pants in some of those posts.

In conclusion.... drop your pants, and get comfy in your chair reading the backlash... pro or not.

Edit: I don't understand how people PHYSICALLY get their blood pressure to skyrocket by reading posts. You can talk about my mom on here and it wouldn't faze me the slightest.

You also made a lot of sense, as usual.

See, there's ways with words. They can build up as well as tear down, They can hurt or they can help.
