Grady vs Billy I

I like them both also but isnt Grady's whistling kinda irritating after a while!

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS, but I love his commentary and his stories. My all time favorite Gardy line: "When you have a girl friend on the road and you get to the hotel room every night put a five ball and an orange on top of the TV. As soon as she can tell the difference, find a new girlfriend.

I get the feeling that your opinion is pretty common, and I can actually see why people would agree with you. I guess this would also explain why we rarely hear from Wych anymore.

I stand by my previous post though, as I really like the guy. He adds excitement to the game for me, and outside the booth he's probably one of the nicest guys I've ever met.

I would not put him at the top of my list but I like his enthusiasm and he generally makes good technical points regarding the approach to the game.

Perhaps someone with the screen name "wincardona" or "Grady" could shed some light? I think these two posters actually know a thing or two about this topic...

-Andrew

It would be cool to hear input from one or both of these great legends...How cool would it be for them to transfer their booth arguments to our forum?

Billy: "He's just gonna go two rails here, that's the easiest and most natural route."

Grady: "I like hitting this with a little speed, and going four rails, between the 8 and 6."

Billy: "Why would you take a risk that you don't have to take?"

Grady: ".................."

:D:D:D

(I prefer Billy's "chickensh!t" method of playing pool.)

I will second the YESSSSSSSSSSS. I can't listen to Grady. To me it is just mumble, mumble, whistle. I talked with him a little at a Joss event and he sounds way different in person. He has great post here and is very well spoken.

I think if you put him and Billy together, you would get 50 min of stories and 10 minute of commentary.

Perfect! The stories are great! I like when they argue and then talk about gambling with each other

I think the problem you are referencing is that Accustats used to have a modest little booth for the commentators. They would constantly tell Grady to quiet down...which led to obviously toned-down commentary (mumbling).

FWIW, GM & BI are my favorite commentator pairing...you can depend on great insight, stories, & banter.

That's what I like...not--> "9 down! If he pots one on the next break off, he'll be in the catbirds seat to take the match."

First let me say that Mark Wilson is a very nice guy, very knowledgable pool-wise, and very good and qualified at commentating 9ball, but....

He's also on a few one pocket Accustat tapes, and he's completely clueless about the game - he admits it himself....all he does on these tapes is ask his booth-partner what the shooter should do......So what totally baffles me, is why Pat Fleming has had him in the booth commentating one pocket, when he can't contribute anything.

- Ghost

PS, I think "Weanie Beanie" did a great job analyzing on some of the older Accustats One Pocket tapes where he was commentating

Mark Wilson is not a one pocket specialist, but he definitely knows quite a bit about the game.

He may not have the specific one pocket knowledge that some others have, but his general pool wisdom is far superior to most, imo. He's always touting the advantages of playing the percentages, shooting the right shot for your skill level and your personal game, etc.

I find (found) Bill "Weenie Beanie" Staton to be repetitive and arrogant. He constantly criticizes player's shot selection, as if he were the baddest mf'er to ever screw a cue together.

I will say that if I'm suffering from insomnia, I can plug in a match where Beanie is commentating....and BOOM, out like a light...:D

I disagree, "Weenie Beanie" analyzed the table and the various shot choices very well, and I never heard him disrespect a player....

And as for criticizing players shot choices, Diliberto and Buddy do that a lot....but they each give me a different reaction....when Danny criticizes, it sounds a bit too arrogant and dismissive and it bugs me, but when Buddy does it, it makes me laugh - because when Buddy does it, he does it in a funny way....

When the player is about to shoot a shot he doesn't agree with, Buddy goes into his high-pitched, cartoonishly dramatic, incredulous-inflected, southern accented voice and says "What's he doin'?", "What's he doin'?", and then high-pitch giggles, sometimes saying jokingly afterwards..."Is he in my bracket?"......cracks me up every time.

Billy Incardona and Grady Matthews were the Chick Hearn and Vin Scully of pool! No other commentators are even close. I don't care if they hated each other or not. Billy is so informative on what's happening at the table it's a great learning tool for any up and comer. He made the matches very exciting the way he discribed the action. They were the best bar none imo..........But I will say Pretty Boy Floyd is very entertaining :-)

Ghosty, We have to come over here to find something to agree on ???

Anybody who doesn't like the "Beans" commentary is either NOT a one pocket player, nor a true lover of the game !

Bill was not only NEVER stand-offish, or acted like he knew it all. He made good, concise comments, as the game unfolded, and injected a good deal of humor into the flow, no matter who he was paired with. And he was often paired with some real lame-o's.

The best color commentator's IMHO, were... Beanie, Buddy, Billy I, Grady, and the Beard. (not in that exact order... but close to it.)

Who wants to hear boring technical details, pool players NEVER agree on the same shot in one pocket anyway. The banter and the stories are what makes it enjoyable...or not.

If you want cheap lesson's, buy a book, or a DVD on the subject, and study your brains out...

Would you enjoy Jay Leno reading the phone book ? There is an art to color commentary, and delivery. Very few have it in our little world.... Beany had it in spades.

Dick

PS Jasper, I also agree with your take on Danny D, and a few others Usually too caustic and humorless for my taste.

I agree with Ghost, MarkGW, and SJDick. Grady, Billy, Freddy and Buddy were my favorites. No one has better insights than Grady. He sees all the shots, and can call them better than most.

I've come to enjoy Danny's commentary, mainly because he's mellowed a little with age. He used to be too opinionated and arrogant. His banter back and forth with Billy is always enjoyable.

I'm sure Mark Wilson was invited to commentate on one-pocket simply because of his pool celebrity status. Likewise I'm imagine guys like Jim Rempe or Earl Strickland have been invited to do 1P commentary, even though neither of them are good one-pocket players.

Dickie.......Truth is, we actually agree on most things....we just don't like to acknowledge it, cuz we have more fun needling each other, lol.

And let me mention one more guy.....although he didn't commentate on that many tapes, I enjoyed listening to Johnny Ervolino...may he rest in peace....he was funny, and no matter what he said, just listening to that scratchy voice with that Brooklyn accent, would make me smile.

Too late bbb/lll,

The Author/Poet/Cowboy has allready blown our cover, with a parody on what the Ghost and I would be like in the booth.

Even though Dennis is a mis-informed, needling type "Geek", his tasteless and very droll humor, does seem to derive endless giggles from his "FANny" CLUB...:yeah:
