Great Amphibious Players

Keith was the best opposite hand player I have seen. I never saw anyone else willing to switch hands along with himself switching hands and play even. I saw him adjust weight playing opposite handed with the other guy playing regular, but never saw them both switch. If someone knows of a match with Keith and the other guy both playing opposite handed I would be interested in knowing the results.

Lassiter did the same thing

When he needed to, Luther would put his right hand on the table fingers down, kinda like a loose fist. I've tried it and it actually works really well. It will from time to time garner some scoffs and chuckles, but is really a good way to do it if you can't switch very easy.

On a side note, from time to time a buddy of mine and myself play for extended periods of time with our "other" hand. We might play few games or sometimes a whole set or two left handed. after a while we got pretty good at it and now i can switch for just about any shot and rarely have to get the bridge. I will tell you that when we switch back it feels great and my stroke feels really relaxed and natural

buddy played very good, and used an awkard upside down bridge with his off hand.

Ronnie O'Sullivan is the best ambidexterous player, no exceptions. No one plays as comfortably opposite handed as he does. I think he is the only player I have ever seen play entire matches opposite handed. Everyone else simply switches in tournament play when they need to.

If Ronnie is playing left handed he only switches back for power shots, tough shots and out of reach shots.

Have you been hanging with DiLiberto again???

EXACTLY.

That's what I thought he was doing. Using the old Danny D line.

Reyes can play opposite handed ok. So can Dallas West.

Any diehard Accu-Stats fan knows that what he is referring to is Diliberto made a joke onetime about a player being "amphibious" instead of ambidextrous. He was just being funny; obviously Danny is a very bright guy who knows the meanings of the two words.

Another pro later told ESPN that Danny wouldn't be a good commentator for them because he didn't know the difference between the two words.

Danny lost a potentially good commentating job, the rest of us have been stuck with inferior commentary ever since.

I really think Danny is rightfully still a little bitter about the whole episode.

Maybe but perhaps that is more of lesson in when it's not right to jack around. Or at least make a reference to the fact that you are AWARE that you used the wrong word, like maybe "that Buddy Hall is stoking them so good he doesn't care which hand he uses ad probably could play just as good underwater"

Many people have lost broadcasting jobs from such incidents. If you want to be a professional then you should ACT like one. If I were a professional pool player and I lost the US Open because I wanted to joke around during the match and do something inappropriate then I have no one but myself to blame.

I for one LOVE to have Danny D in the booth. I like his style. I can't agree though that he doesn't share some blame if your story is true about him losing jobs with ESPN because of this gaffe. I'd really have to think that ESPN is a little smarter than that though. Allen Hopkins often mispronounces words or says them in his East coast Joisy way and he has been an ESPN commentator for years. Allen is first class by the way. My point being that if Allen is acceptable then so is Danny D.

Wouldn't a guy who can shoot excellent pool while on a cruise ship be considered a great amphibious player?

Oh man...this thread is killing me. I cant stop laughing.

When my roommate and I shoot racks and one of us has to shoot left handed, we ALWAYS comment on DiLiberto's commentary from that one match. It's our favorite joke.

Any real diehard Accu-Stats fan would know that Danny D. actually stole that line from Allen Hopkins.

Allen was not trying to be funny, he genuinely had no idea. Watch enough matches and you'll hear Danny recount the story.

Every time he misuses the word, it's a (not so thinly) veiled insult.

As the great Rastafari Bob Marley would say "Yes - I"

thanks man

See post #15

that's the most amazing thing i've seen. WOW !
like a mirror. rep for the link, thanks.

Thanks, androd! Ronnie's something else, isn't he? I like what one of the commentators, Clive Everton, says about Ronnie:

"Left, right, left, right, left, right... he should be in the Army!" :D

(For those interested in watching just how ambidextrous Ronnie O'Sullivan is, see the link in post #15, where he finishes off Ali Carter with a flourish -- by shooting an alternating-handed century.)

I'm definitely not amphibious. Here's how I shoot "opposite handed".

"Ambidextrous" is being able to use both hands equally well.

"Amphibious" means being able to travel on both land and water. :P

Geee.. I'll bet he did know that. :groucho: ;)

So, help me out guys, who else out there were jam up switch hitters?
From the pool world, IMO, nobody is close to Efren Reyes. He's the only player I've seen power draw with his opposite side.

In the other billiard games, Ronnie O"Sullivan is undeniably one of the most adept amphibious players in snooker.

Our own Dick/Butch "#####" Leonard from upstate NY has 300+ runs right-winged, and 100+ runs opposite finned.

He got canned for that? I remember that tape and he said right away. Of course I know what amphibious means, its only a little joke or something like that.
I always thought he and Bill Incardona were the beat pair accu-stats ever had.

Unless I'm mistaken, it was Hopkins who told someone that Danny used the term "amphibious" incorrectly and might not be qualified to do commentary for ESPN.

Danny was bitter because it cost him a potentially good gig as a tv commentator.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'll take my chances on being right against anyone with "420" in their AZ handle.:D

Oh sh!t, I forgot what my AZ name is again...

I take offense to your comment.

My handle has nothing to do with my personality, or whether I am right or wrong.

Cite the Accu-Stat match that proves me wrong and I will bow to your superior wisdom. (It won't happen.)

I am not willing to argue a point unless I'm absolutely certain I'm correct. In this instance I know I'm right, and any real pool historian will vouch for me.

SJM, Jay Helfert, Wincardona, who's right?

And if true then there is the proof that ESPN couldn't care less about it.
