Great Job in the booth JoeyA!!!

I'm sorry I didn't see your thread.....it was late...

Grindz,
You either violated a copyright law here at AZB or else you done HIJACKED my thread when I wasn't looking! See.....http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=121407

Yes, my thread was weaker than yours. Yes, yours did a better job of spelling out JoeyA's nice work than my initial thread did. But I typed mine fast. I was in a hurry between games to get back to the live stream.
I was on JoeyA's bandwagon while you were still watching the NFL!
JoeyA is the poster whose good rep finally gave me the much balleyhooed and highly coveted "11th greenie box"! So, neener, neener neener to you!

***JUST KIDDING td....(Hahahahah....) :)

I'll add my additional comments to your post, since you just stomped a mudhole in my JoeyA post.....

In all seriousness, JoeyA did a very professional job. He not only knew his stuff (predicting a 3 rail kick from Shannon to get out of a tough safe, which he did) but he also seemed very relaxed and poised in the booth, like it was second nature to him. You get that from a professional who's been there, done that before, ala Billy, Grady, Danny, etc. But JoeyA did his job well, without trying at all to be an attention hog. His input was mannerly, insightful and he has loads of knowledge. I'm very glad that the peeps here at AZB are showing him some well deserved love.

Also, I want to mention how fun it was watching that with guys like Ktown, Blackjack, BigTruck, BigDogatLarge, Big Nasty, SJD, "Spotasaurus" :) , Lenny, Derek Disco and so many other AZBers who only added to the good memory that was yesterday. Watching Jay "at work" in the chair was worth the price of that live stream! The funny comments were, to steal a line from DerekDisco..."creative".

Lastly, seeing Shannon grind it out so hard against Charlie Bryant was awesome. What fight in him, what determination, and what a talent!
Hillbilly did great all week, but Shannon made some great pressure packed shots to nail another win. I'm so happy for him and Marge.

Thanks everybody for making yesterday such a special day.

and I don't want to be a nuthanger.....but it isn't too often that you get to witness what we got to see this w/e in the manner it was shown and with the consistently high content commentary. I've been impressed with Joey's manners here on AZB in the past.....but left the stream knowing he is just an all around CLASS ACT.

And Grady....had me just about shooting beer out my nose, I was laughing so hard.:)

You know that I was only kidding around....:)

The importanat thing is that JoeyA gets the well deserved credit that he earned with the great job he consistantly did. We have a real talent among us.

On a down note....he can no longer con us that he's only a "strong B" player....not with how he was calling 3 rail safes and kicks! I think lots of them guys shooting weren't listening to music on their I-Pods, they was listening to JoeyA's commenting and picking up tips on what to do next!

It was a great time being at the matches and watching with some fine people. Huge props to all the players that put their hearts in some fine matches. I am proud to have my name listed with such well respected, long standing members of this forum. Pool is alive and well at AZB. Long live billiards.

?????????

Good job Joey! You're a natural bourne booth man an made the matches much along. I like the fact very much that you were able to stay impartial. On a scale of 1 to 10 I'm giving you a 9 an a bunch of green......

Joey

You're commentary this weekend was outstanding. The event this past weekend was unbelievable. This tournament has set a new standard in live stream presentation. Everybody involved in in putting forth all of the positive effort should be extremely proud of how well it turned out. Great format, great commentators, great players, great matches - and awesome sponsors!

He IS a strong "B" player

A very very very very strong "B" player! :D :D :D

JoeyA...

I gotta add my voice to the praise for your excellence on the commentary.
Very well done, Joey.

Wow!

For all of you that tuned in to the LiveStreaming from Fayetteville, NC this past week I just wanted to say THANK YOU.

The week was a BLUR so don't chastize me too hard about the order of the things that I am about to share because I was fighting hard to stay up with the pace of things.

As usual, at the last minute I decided to play in the Great Southern Billiard Tour (One Pocket portion) tournament and while I was two and out, I had a blast. I got the opportunity to play two great players, Leonardo Andam and Dave Grossma. I even scared both of them, if only for a little while. :D

My biggest THANK YOU goes to Jay Helfert, who suggested to the LIVE STREAMING MANAGEMENT (at the tournament) that they use me in the commentating booth. The thought had never crossed my mind to do any commentating. It just wasn't something I had ever considered in life. That kind of stuff (in my mind) was always consigned to people that specialized in that type of work, right? Well, I was wrong and when INSIDE POOL MAGAZINE asked me if I would like to do a match commentating, I thought to myself, "Why not? It might be fun and who knows, I might get to rub elbows with another great commentator of theirs." :D

Surprise, surprise, surprise! Can't you hear Gomer Pyle (another marine) saying that? Jay and I had the opportunity to sit in on the first match together and he helped me along with the commentating duties, while we were managed by the Producer, Dustin and JR Calvert. Jay gave me some tips that helped make the job much easier.

The surprises kept coming one after the other. I felt like a kid on Christmas morning, opening up one present after another. I asked Grady if he thought maybe he and I could commentate a match together. Grady and I have known each other for a lot of years and I value his friendship. He informed me that he would be delighted to do some commentating with me and I was off to tearing the wrapper off of another incredible Christmas gift. Grady was a blast and with the Internet forum viewers getting into the act and the Producer whispering encouragment and guiding direction, we had lots of fun doing a match together. (THANKS A LOT SMORGASSBORED for the "pants" humor.   )

After sitting in the booth with the PROFESSOR, I could have died and went to heaven but NO...............there were more surprises to come.

JR Calvert, the man at Inside Pool Magazine, who makes it all happen asked me if I would like to do some additional commentating with HIM. Well, that just blew me away. I couldn't understand what was happening or why but I was riding a tsunami and it was as exciting as anything I had ever done before. I have always been drawn to excitement and commentating was really exciting for me. It was something new to me and I was having the time of my life. I wanted to interact with the Internet viewers more than I did but wasn't able to do so because of the need to concentrate on the match at hand and my newness to commentating. JR was like SILK. That guy's voice and easy transitioning back and forth between the discussion about the match taking place in front of our very eyes, the interaction with the Internet viewers and the incredible way that he paid his repects to the SPONSORS who were bring the LiveSTream broadcast to the Internet viewers FREE OF CHARGE as well as his kind handling of this newbie in the booth simply made my day.
Dustin, the producer was inspirational every minute of the day. He reminded me of the Walt Disney movie I saw as a child with Jimminy Cricket riding in the horses's ear giving him instruction on what to do at every turn.

At this point, I just didn't think it could get any better and now my confidence was growing a little and I wanted to ask if I could possible be considered to do the FINALS commentating with my friend Grady Mathews, only to find that he had already headed back to his pool room. I believe Grady had driven to the tournament and I'm sure he had lots going on since he had been at the tournament for quite some time.

Between the matches, I would run to the restaurant located inside of KING STREET BILLIARDS and grab a quick bite to eat or something to drink and make a restroom call. At this point I was running on high octane and couldn't believe I was still feeling excited about being there. After all, I lost two matches in a row and here I was feeling happy. I didn't know why I deserved to be so happy but like any kid at Christmas time, I kept accepting the presents with a smile on my face and a grateful heart. The producer, Dustin asked me if I would sit in with Melissa Little, a WPBA pro on one of the matches and I jumped at the chance. Melissa was so cool in the booth, I felt really comfortable talking with her. She had a great sense of humor as well as a great all around knowledge of pool and I had a blast.

By now, I couldn't think of anything else that could top my good fortune but who does JR now set me up with but the GREAT NICK VARNER. Until you sit next to Nick in a booth and LISTEN to his insight about pool, you will never fully realize just how knowledgeable and realistic he is. NICK was the REAL DEAL and a pleasure to hang out with. Nick had an incredible tournament and played some of the best pool I had ever seen him play. I learned so much from Nick just listening to him talk. Did I say I was having a blast?:D

When things couldn't get any better, before I knew it I was sitting next to the young, great Mike Davis and I can't say enough about Mike. Fortune had me simply having a conversation with Mike a couple of days prior to the commentating although I had never met him before this tournament. Mike had been drinking a lot of coffee during the tournament and I made small talk with him about his use of coffee and he offered an explanation and said he had been recovering from a severe cold and was tired and even though he didn't like to drink coffee during a tournament he was drinking more coffee than normal because he was still under the weather. Mike shared a lot of information with me and I can tell you that he is defintely one of the good guys and I would be honored to break bread with him down the road. Mike's easy going style allowed us to have a lot of "easy time" in the booth sharing our individual perspectives about the match taking place.

There is no need to talk about the matches right now as all of the matches will be available for purchase. These DVD matches will be VERY HIGH QUALITY RESOLUTION and I plan to purchase some of them for my own viewing (Smorg I don't think I'm going to be able to part with my copies :D ) Inside Pool Mag should have them available within a couple of weeks. Some of the recorded matches were incredible. I'll just mention one. Hillbilly played a match against Shane Van Boening and his break was working and he never let up on Shane. It was a display of dominance that you seldom see at the end of a tournament and was a VERY QUICK match. Shane had been put in the freezer by Charley Bryant, at least for that match.

I was disappointed to not see Jerry Forsythe and Mike Howerton at the tournament but had a great time. They probably wouldn't have let me sit in the booth with them. :D

But seriously, I wanted to thank all of you for the kind compliments you made in this thread and in the Chat Room. If I ever get another chance to do some commenating again I promise to try and interact a bit more with the Chat Room.

When I got back from the tournament last night I viewed this thread and all I could say is "OH MY GOD". You guys and girls capped off one of the most incredible weeks of my life.

Billy, your words meant a great deal to me and I would be honored to sit in the booth with you ANY TIME.

Thanks again, you all made my day.

This post is no surprise

This post is no surprise, Joey is a class act all the way.

Joey you were better behind a mike than many are that have done it for years and sure to get even better with the additional time which seems very likely to come your way. When you and Billy I. share time in a booth it will be a must have DVD regardless of who is playing.

Hu

Edited to add: Folks you might consider sending Joey a little green to show your appreciation. NO! Not cash, no sense getting carried away. Maybe a little green rep would be nice though.

I have to throw my $.02 in here...

As some of you know, I was at the tournament in Fayetteville, and was one of the moderators in the live chat, working right at the table where all of the equipment was housed. I was helping out JR and Co. with things, but as far as Mr. JoeyA goes, you could tell he was on cloud 9 all week. He couldn't get the smile off of his face, even after sitting in the booth for a solid 15 hours! Most people would have been complaining about how stiff they were, their joints, or their bum. But I think Joey was just too into what was going on to care about how his body felt. I'm so glad that I was able to watch this unfold right in front of me, and I couldn't help myself from feeling pretty happy for Joey considering he's a fellow AZ'er of some repute. I'm pretty sure that we'll all get the chance to hear him give his insightful commentary to more great matches in the future. He not only impressed me, but Dustin, the producer, was blown away by Joey's presence, character, and insight that he gave each match. Great job Joey! It was a pleasure meeting you for the first time, and getting to watch you break new ground for yourself with the commentary.

JoeyA, You Were Awesome!

First, I was not able to watch as much of the tournament as I would have liked, but I certainly want to thank everyone that brought the live feed into our homes. Thank You!

Joey,

Not only did I enjoy your commentary, but your thoughtful thread you took the time to write was fantastic. Thank you for burning the midnight oil in NC and helping make the stream an enjoyable experience. Rep to you for your great experience. It's great that you enjoyed yourself as much as you said.

Dave

P.S. I love talking with Melissa about life and pool. She has endless enthusiasm for both. You must have had a blast.

I thought he might do a good job but I was blown away by how he sat down and immediately started adding insightful commentary to the first match he worked on with me. Too bad the live feed was down, but I think you can still view that match on ustream. How about that, Jay and Joey together in the commentary booth. If I hadn't been otherwise occupied I would have loved to do another match with him. Maybe I'll get a rematch at DCC.

I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot more of Joey boy in the booth. Maybe now he won't have time to woof at me to play. I saw part of his match with Andam that went hill-hill, and all I can say is that Joey plays some very good One Hole. Way out of my league!

Jay,
Very gracious comments!
You and JoeyA are two of AZB high powered members, and your "feud" over playing, the banter in setting things up just right, the cornball humor and the funny woofing from you both was one of the best threads ever here.
That you and JoeyA each bestowed heaps of praise upon each other shows what class acts you both are. No wonder you both are so respected around here.

Now Jay, before all this lovey-dovey stuff swells your head too much, we in live-stream land had a blast commenting on your various stages of repose during your refing duties. You leaned on one of them Diamonds so long that we thought you got Gorilla Glued to it by someone as a joke and couldn't get loose! But you reassured us that was not the case when you finally started walking.....for a chair, which you promptly sat down in for so long that some thought you were a mannequin. After as long a time as it takes Kid Delicious to run a set of rotation, you moved again. Some smarta$$ asked "What happened to Jay? Did he fall under the table?" Yes Jay, all the peeps here were in rare form! :D

And Jay, the ONLY reason we can all kid with you like this is we know you deserve it! (Just kidding, just kidding!)

Jay, JoeyA, you guys are treasured here. We the peeps got much love and appreciation for both you guys. You're both a credit to our great sport.

Joey !

 Joey, I didn't know you were going to be doing some commentary or I would have tuned in. Let me know next time, it's obvious by everyone's input that you did a great job !

Jay,
Very gracious comments!

Thanks Terry. I am a "hands on" tournament director, meaning I want to observe the action and be there in case I'm needed to make a ruling or call a hit. I've always felt like the most important job is to be aware of what's happening during the matches. I was "glued" to the table and then the chair because I wanted to be close to the action.

Pool, like other sports, has some volatile personalities, and they demand extra attention. I do my best to head off problems before they happen. If you're paying attention, you can do that. You won't if you're sitting off to the side somewhere (or absent altogether), and not watching what's going on, especially with some of pool's more "interesting" personalities. I even eat where I can watch the play, and I like having a high chair to sit where I can watch the matches in progress.

I put in 14 hour days all week and I feel drained right now. But it was a great tournament with loads of exciting matches. I'm sure it will get bigger and better in years to come. Danny Odom, the owner of King St. Billiards, was a magnificent host and Marge Daulton was a super big help all week. What an asset she was, from doing the draw, making player's name cards, updating the tourney charts, and writing up a schedule of each day's matches.

Basically Marge and I ran the event, as Shannon was focused on playing his matches and keeping the players happy and informed. He did his job pretty well too  .

I might add that all decisions regarding prize money pay outs, rules of play etc. were joint decisions that Shannon, Marge and I all agreed upon.

I am very proud of JoeyA.
It just goes to prove that all the time spent hanging around with me and learning proper English paid off.

Doug
(DVD sales should SOAR if JoeyA. buys a copy of every match he commentated and gives them away to his friends for Christmas.... imo) :)
You're quite right, Smorg. It just goes to show you how a minor shortstop from a small poolroom in Metairie, LA can rise to the heights of commentating on an important pool tournament with top players! A true success story. I know Joey is too bashful to say it, but I took the time to break him in while commentating along with me at the recent Mississippi Gulf Coast One-Pocket Shoot Out on UStream. I knew the lad had talent, and this proves it.

And this couldn't have come at a more opportune time. Since in recent times Joey's game has slipped so badly, at least he'll be able to do some commentary at a few tournaments, so as to still enjoy himself.

One small problem. I heard through the grapevine that Joey's head is now so swollen, that he can't fit through the door to the poolroom!:D

Good job, bro~
