Greatest cuemaker ever...........

I nominate Richard Neighbors. He builds a great cue!

Brian

I have hit balls with Chris Bartrums cue and its great, and he has a screw on extension thats the triple nuts.

Well I've read all the posts, and no one asked.... who made the Best HITTIN' cue stick of all time. There are many great cuemakers, but who made the cue that played the best?

As a guy who has owned every cue on the planet, here is my opinion:

If you want a lifelong relationship with your cuemaker: Keith Josey
If you want the "magic wand": Dennis Searing
If you want excellent return on investment: South West or Black Boar
If it was my money, and price was no object: GinaCue

There's my 2 cents.

my choice is ...Bill McDaniel....
the hit of his cues is awesome (just my personal opinion)(like butter)so smooth.

i have played with 3 southwests 1 belonged to Joe Blackburn (formally from JOB'S in nashville)and it hit wonderful the 2nd was ok but the 3rd hit like a rock.....
played with many others but McDaniel was the best for me.

Let's put this in perspective.....

Greatest Cuemaker:
Gus Szamboti. As it stands right now, Gus is still the greatest cuemaker of all time.

Greatest Contemporary Traditional:
John Showman
Barry Szamboti
Ron Haley

Greatest Contemporary Traditional Cuemaker with cnc:
Dennis Searing

Greatest Contemporary Artistic:
Ernie Guiterrez
Bob Manzino
Tony Scanelli-Black Boar

Traditional Artistic:
Frank Paradise
Eugene Balner

Greatest all around living cuemaker:
Ernie Guiterrez

Who do I believe will be the next in line as the greatest of all time:

Dennis Searing/Ernie Guiterrez

imo not to mention Pete Tascarella let alone George Balabushka in your "perspective" is nothing short of an GROSS "oversite" when talking about this subject.......

FYI....Tony's (Black Boar) last name is Sciannella not "Scanelli"........

Joel Hercek and Ron Haley.

In a few years I think Tony Zinzola will be right up there. He's there now, but it takes time to get the recognition... but it will come, IMO.

Thanks for bringing Tony's correct spelling to my attention. Sciannella:smile:

It's kinda of funny..I'm always correcting everyone on spelling
South West correctly, usually it's spelled incorrectly as Southwest.
I guess there is balance in the universe.

As far as George Balabushka he is on my top 10 list of the greatest.
As far as I know George typically did not build his own forearms,I believe Brunswick,Burton Spain,Gus Szamboti supplied them, if this is incorrect I will be more than happy to change his placement on my top ten list.

To me the forearm is the heart and soul of a cue and George was wise in his selection of Burton Spain and Gus Szamboti to build them. George had his reasons for not building his own and that was his decision.

I believe George was a great cuemaker, innovator and is revered by many, his use of rings, mop inlays etc made for beautiful cues but, if he did not build the complete cue and I cannot place him as the greatest. I do admire his work greatly and he is one on of the greatest.

The reason I would put him on my top 10 is his workmanship, innovation and design and his reputation of a great hitting cue.

So we can disagree on our perspectives on who is the greatest or near greatness...it was not an "oversight" on my part.

But as alway's I respect your opinions and thoughts, I know you've been around cuemaking for quite some time.

I am going to say of the cues I have played it is either Gina or Billy Shick. Never owned either one but a friend of mine who is truly blessed has let me play these monsters. Only difference between my opinoin and his is he ruined the shick when he put an OB-1 on it. What a waste.

Well we all have our opinions, that is for certain...

Gus and George stand as equals IMHO and alone.. very alone...

But we all know the best modern day cuemaker is in Florida.. and his last name is Wheat... lol :D In case you don't know him, everyone else builds crap and takes to long to build it, cause he said so.. but he'll build it in less time, of course holding dimensions are optional...

This is quite a thread. Who would be the Greatest? The one who made the best looking cue or the most expensive cue or the best playing cue? Or would it be the one who treated their clientele with the greatest respect?

I have owned and shot with many different cues over 40+ years.

Viking, Palmer, Paradise, Joss, Szamboti, Meucci, Scruggs. Pretty much in that order.

As far as greatness, Danny Janes and Tim Scruggs would be very hard to beat on my list. Both of them always treated me with respect and went out of their way to achieve satisfaction.

I only knew Gus from about a half a dozen phone calls. He seemed very jovial in our conversations and was very pleasant to deal with. The cue he made me was a monster. Paid $192.00, shipped, 1977. Wish I still had that girl.

The two Scruggs I have today, are cues that each have their own distinctive hit and I couldn't imagine replacing either one for playability.

But, when I hit with any cue, it is the hit I remember that came from the cue Danny built for me in 1976. It was Six pointer with Ivory Joint 3/8ths 10 pin and 59". One of 6 he ever made like that. Sam in MD still has one and Mike in Albany has one and they both use them as their regular cue. (of course Albany Mike doesn't shoot too good any more anyway! or does he?) It was fantastic playing cue that had a feel and hit that will be imbedded in my thick skull forever.
Paid $240. Do I ever miss that girl.

To me it's a dead heat between two guys who showed me a ton about cues, treated me with dignity, had an ear and an eye for my needs, and loved pool.

My nominees are Danny Janes and Tim Scruggs.

That's my nickel's worth.

Paul Mottey. I've got alot of cues including an original Balabushka, palmers, runde era schon, and a Franklin Southwest. The southwest is the closest second for me but I keep going back to the Mottey.

I would have to say Jeff Olney. Jeff makes a great playing cue. His attention to detail, sharp points, overall fit & finish of the cue is out of this world. But his prices are not. And his customer service is top notch.
