Gunshots in front of poolhall, Dallas, TX

I visit Hawleys on a regular basis and this place is a great place to shoot, however the area is a little rough. There is a security guard that walks the area so I'm sure issues have occured before. Not surprised that this happened at all.

I used to buy a lot of stuff from Sharon Hawley, about ten years, or so ago. Is she and Walter not together anymore? Just curious. :)

I'm lucky to have friends tell me which threads are the unique ones because I would have missed this one.

Thanks for the heads-up about the Dallas gunshots. You can never be too careful. It could happen anywhere.

One is from a member most consider to contribute positively to the forum generally overall.

The other is from a member most consider an asshole generally overall.

I guess you could call it a double standard, but hey, its a privately owned forum, and lets just be real, you treat assholes worse than you do other people.

I do get these points and I'm not saying I agree with Duckies sentiments.

What I am saying is management continually allows CJ to throw his digs, which in turn creates responses like Duckies.

Action: CJ throws a barb at Lou, management ignores it.

Reaction: Duckie responds in a like manner and gets banned.

The real problem here is the action. There is no reaction without the action so lets ban the reaction? Really?

Dickie , you better " Get your mind right. And I do mean RIGHT".

I hope the quotation marks critic will give me pass in this case.

fun stuff

Thanks for the laugh.

My original thought George, et.al., was that if Duckie had said that CJ's charm was like camel dung rather than character, he would probably have not gotten banned for a day.

As far as CJ's comment goes I wonder if Lou thinks it was ban worthy ? IMO Lou has said worse in his more zealous moments prior to the Wilson, "cool it" comment.

Dorman, no need to quote when paraphrasing , "LOL".

FTR, I don't think either should be banned, I think the whole thing was pretty mild.

I guess my real point is, there shouldn't be selective enforcement like what just happened. If you're doling out bans or warnings or whatever you have to start with the instigator(I don't feel their exchange warranted either). I've seen more than 1 person banned for "discussions" with CJ where he gave just as good as he got yet he's never asked to tone it down.

Thats what they do in a hockey fight. The 2 can fight to the death, unless they fall and get offsetting penalties. If a 3rd player joins in they are ejected. They can however start their own mutual combat with another opponent. This sort of rule could work well here and stop the gangbanging.

Why do 90% of threads on here end up about CJ? The original thread asked if anyone knew anything about what happened at the shooting and clearly no one does. This thread needs to be closed.

Yeah, I started the thread because local news media in the D/FW area are notoriously bad about following-up on news stories and the next thing ya know names are getting thrown around and someone gets a temporary ban.

WOW is all I can say.

Don't worry if your thread had been about puppies and kittens it probably would have ended up in the same place.

Lou and I have a friendly, often funny banter.

I agree somewhat. Sometimes I think there is a double standard, but in this case, not so much.

Lou and CJ have somewhat of a "friendly" rivalry here. Sure its gets heated sometimes, but even if they don't admit it, I think they both enjoy it.

Duckie on the other hand, stuck his nose in it without have a "horse in the race." He also has some bad posting habits of making himself out to be superior to other people, and in general is not well liked.

I'm biased though.......I think Duckie is an idiot, so I can't objectively give an opinion.

Listen, Lou and I have a friendly, often funny banter. I really like the guy ....in the same way I like pizza, it's delicious, however, I wouldn't want to live off it for any extended amount of time.

At the end of the day this is just for entertainment, nothing more, nothing less. I make a living answering questions about the bar and pool room business, so talking about pool is fun for me, and it brings a lot of great Karma. 'The Game is the Teacher'

The problem with Dallas Poolhalls

That's the problem with most of Dallas's Poolhalls, most are located in somewhat of a bad neighborhood, yet for some of them, just a few blocks away there can be neighborhoods with million dollar homes.

Where CJ's Billiard Palace was located at the corner of E. Grand & Gaston was kind of like that. To the north there was white rock lake & the dallas arboretum, with some very nice homes for a few blocks. to the west, going back towards downtown on Gaston there were a few blocks of nice neighborhoods & even a country club, but if you went too far in either direction the neighborhoods got a little questionable. If you went South on E. Grand back towards Fair Park the neighborhoods were really bad. When CJ's first opened at that location it wasn't so bad, but as time went on the neighborhoods changed and it got a little bit rougher every year. CJ tried to adapt the room to meet the changes in the neighborhood & the clientele and was successful at it for awhile, but I think it finally just got so bad that CJ didn't want to deal with it anymore.

In 1990 i got interested in pool again , there were 7 pool halls within 10-12 miles of each other . There was a Speeds just north of CJ's before the WR spillway going north on Garland . There was Big Fat Mikes's at Abrams and Skillman , and Fibber McGee's , a bar , had a decent bar table tournament at same intersection.

Then Click's on Abrams was just up the hill . They opened the Clicks on Skillman further north about that time . There was a smaller room in that same strip center that had Olhausens , first time i had played on them . There was another Speeds a couple of blocks away at Audelia and Forest . Almost forgot , there was a Speeds down 1 exit at the Kingsley/Jupiter exit on Kingsley . If you didn't mind driving a little bit more there was Wizards in Richardson .

I know most of the rooms you are talking about, and since the 90's most of them have either gone out of business, changed ownership & names, or the neighborhoods have totally gone to H#ll. Last I heard the Clicks on Skillman was still there but under a different name & ownership. There might still be a room or 2 on Greenville Ave., but again not the best of areas to be hanging out. Wizards in Richardson is about the only one I know of that is in a somewhat decent area, and it's more of a Sports bar than a Poolroom, even though it has Pool Tables.

In Arlington there's still Rusty's, but I don't really care for the neighborhood, but I wouldn't exactly call it a bad neighborhood either, there was a Clicks & a Speeds across the highway from 6 Flags, but I think I heard that the Clicks went out of business, don't know about the Speeds. You might ask CJ about rooms in the area since I think he's living somewhere around Arlington now.

As Fast Eddie told Vincent in The Color of Money - This used to be just your average Bad Neighborhood, Now Look at It.

Thats how i see it also, I like both of you guys Cj, so iam glad you really feel that way about Lou as i hope he feels the same about you (which i think he does).

CJ AND Lou both have plently of goods that they offer here at AZ.

I love Lous stories and tournament talk and Everything Cj talks about and teaches!

I'm not going to beat around the bush here.

I have spoken with CJ. We understand each other.
That said, CJ is a big target and the trolls love to target guys like him.

I'm not going to be patient with trolls. I have absolutely no motivation to play along.

Guys like CJ are doing all of us a favor. He has an agenda, so what.
If you're here to learn and make friends, do so.
If you're here to see how long I'll allow you to troll the forum and valued people...it won't take me long to identify you and you'll sort the problem out for me.

If people don't believe me, flame on.

Duckie got a 24 hour ban. people can learn from his example or not.
You know where the line is, or "what side the forum's bread is buttered on". I'll make no pretense about it.
