Thanks, I haven’t been looking at high end cues for a while, ie, Gus, Barry, Balabuska, etc. How is the overall market, has it gotten strong again?

Thank you for following up but I am still firm.

A different interested buyer sent me a link to a Szamboti that is virtually identical to my cue on Cornerstone Custom Cues that is listed for $13,750.

Their cue has been refinished and has new shafts, my cue is, as it was, when Gus made it and it has the green speck Irish Linen that stays smooth as long as it is not abused.

My cue is in very good condition.

We exchanged a few stories and I do not remember if I posted the following on AZB.

Gus got a phone call when I was in his basement shop, the caller must have been asking about the cue he ordered.

Gus said he had started his cue and after Gus hung up he said, "I can't stand that guy".

I said, "But you said you started his cue".

Gus Said, "Yes, I planted the tree".

Still want to shoot

Sounds about right but I still think the high end and rare cues will still be desirable. I'm talking about the $25,000 cues, not $2,500. Now, if Denny Glenn liquidates that's going to hurt values for awhile at least. I'm looking at the stamp collecting market that fell apart completely but rare stamps are still going for big $.
Yup, Collectibles are as valuable as what people are willing to pay. I have a magic the gathering collection from the 90s that i could probably sell for 5k because of about 60 cards in there. and yet boxes of baseball cards from that era i have are not worth shit. took the the whole set to a shop once and he said if there isnt a daryl strawberry rookie card its nothing.

Does anyone have an answer as to the current state of the market for 1970's higher end Gus Szamboti cues? I like to check in every 6 moths or so. Thanks

From what I've seen on here a Gus has stayed about the same the last couple of years.
A standard player 4 pt 4 veneer linen. 7 to 9k. Up from there.
What if find interesting Barry's cues command more $ than cues by his dad?
I remember what your cue looks like and I think if it were made by Barry, it would be long gone by now.
I can't explain it just what I think.
You have a wonderful cue. Sell it or play with it before you are gone. It might end up in a thrift store!🤣
Where are the pictures of your cue?

There should be several pictures throughout this thread. I will message you. This cue is now almost 50 years old, giving you an idea of how old I am since I am the original owner. The late champion player Gary Spaeth is the one who persuaded Gus to make a cue for me and I am delighted he did. This cue feels absolutely fantastic in your hands. It is something about the way it is balanced that makes it feel almost alive in some way. It is hard to describe but I have not felt that in any other cue. It was a long wait but when it finally arrived I couldn't have been happier. I had told Gus to do whatever he wanted and he made a nice one. Even with all the extras it was only in the $400-$450 zone which at that time was a lot of money for a young guy like me. The plain versions were going for half that amount. Can you imagine wondering whether you should spend $200 extra to get a fancy Gus instead of a plain one? Today that seems like a crazy question. Anyway....You can message me with any questions

Will,
Hope this finds you in good health. Thanks for the kind words. It means a lot to me. You spoke about the page from Gus's order book that I have for my cue. There are 4 other people's cues listed on that page and the prices were $160,$160,$160 and $180 so that must have been the price for a plain cue from Gus at that time. The people's names and addresses are listed on the page as well. I would how many of them are still alive and if they are do they still have their cue?

Not likely, that’s a lotta years!
Btw, I should have mentioned I have seen your cue many times when we lived in Ohio, and it is a very, very nice cue!

I saw Gus’s order book about 10-12 years ago, so the entries were fresher in my mind then than now. I saw many familiar names and some guys I never heard of.

Barry and I were sharing stories that he didn't know and I didn’t know-filling in the blanks. That was one of the coolest things in the cue world I’ve ever had the privilege of doing. I had heard about the order books for years. And they there were in my hands. Wow!

I knew many of the west coast guys and Barry knew more of the east coast guys. Those books are imo a super important part of history in this small corner of the world.

Someone asked me if I have any Szams for sale. 😂😂

Best
Fatboy😃
