You had rules about what you could and couldn't talk about around him. Sounds fun. LOLI don't know.
Gus was friends with Tony that owned the pool room I hung out in in Toms River N.J.
He would visit occasionally to play one pocket.
The rule was to not talk about cues with him unless he brought it up.
I remember he said two things about cue making.
He was talking about shafts and someone asked how he knew a blank would make a good shaft and he said I just know.
He once said that Balabuska taught him a lot about cue making but not all,I had to figure out a lot on my own.
No cue for you! Next! You had rules about what you could and couldn't talk about around him. Sounds fun. LOL
Yeah there were rules, he was considered royalty by some. You had rules about what you could and couldn't talk about around him. Sounds fun. LOL
That would have been for sure.No cue for you! Next!
He made some of the most beautiful cues ever. No doubt. You just brought it up, and I found your comment interesting is all.Yeah there were rules, he was considered royalty by some.
Not me and I dont want to talk about that, the man has passed and he made great cues.
Thanks for the interesting information that not one of the few high end Gus cues went for the roughly $13,000-$16,000 mentioned in this thread. That is the good sort of information this group can provide. Having news on the current pricing for this sort of cue is helpfulIf you look at the floor plan for SBE, I was in the booth with Drawman Cues and Four King Cues.
Nestled between them was Barry.
So I was present for a lot of activity.
Lots of cues were out on display, saw many Gus cues coming out of cases, some sold and some went back into their respective cases.
Not one drew the type of $ represented within this thread and there were a few high end Gus Cues.
Top dollar still went to the latest work coming out of Barry’s efforts… Loaded and clean.

TBH, I think you severely effected the value of your cue (to the downside). You are unknowingly making the cue a little bit of a joke, I have 6 Gus cues and I wouldn’t consider adding your cue to my collection at half true market price. Not to say the only potential buyers of your cue are on this forum but the forum members are knowledgeable and are probably a source of information for non forum member buyers. One of the things some of us appreciate is finding/locating/buying an undiscovered cue unless it’s something special everyone’s knows about (which yours is not).Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Owning 20 Gus cues makes you an expert for sure. I would love to get your estimate on the value of my Gus if you would do so as that would help me greatly in selling it. . Thanks in advance
Maybe I've posted on this before, but I had one well known Balabushka collector make me an offer on my cue and he added, "If you shop the cue around I won't buy it." Since I wasn't selling it anyway I didn't care, but I always remembered that "discovering" something is part of the equation.TBH, I think you severely effected the value of your cue (to the downside). You might want to consider not/stop posting to this threadi, if you sell it do it through a broker and drop your story. NO ONE WANTS a cue someone has been trying to sell for 5 years. All the best!
LogdogDiscovering the "true market price" has proven difficult which is why the information about the low prices for Gus Szamboti cues at the Billiard Expo was interesting. Even with inflation going through the roof the prices are not increasing which seems a bit odd to me. . I have received dozens and dozens and dozens of estimates from several nice people in private message on this forum as well as a few other places but not one person has offered to buy the cue at the average price level. I even had one well known buyer on this forum offer me the asking price and after I accepted he tried to get me to come down a few thousand $ immediately so you just never know. This is a great Gus that I bought directly from Gus 45+ years ago and I am amazed that it appears to not be worth much in today's market.
He's an attention getter and in my opinion doesn't really want to sell it.Logdog
I usually don`t get involved in these kinds of threads & please don`t take this the wrong way by any means. This is just my opinion, you 1st started this thread back on Jan 30, 2017 (5 1/2 yrs ago) saying you bought the cue back in 1976-77 era for $400. You posted that azers have helped you determine that the value today would be 10-18K You also said you had a high offer at $12K for the cue. Not being an a$$ or anything, but that`s a Hellva jump since 1976-77 era. If you want to sell the cue there`s your top offer. Your last sentence says "this is a Gus directly from Gus 45 + yrs ago & your amazed that it appears to not be worth much more in today`s market' Like I said, I`m not trying to be a smart a$$ in any way. But to me that`s a Hellva mark up since you bought it. Just my 2 cents worth

PS; I would love to own a Gus Szamboti cue someday down the road, I just need to hit the Lottery 1st
He’s afraid he is going to sell it to someone for say $12,000 and then hear a few weeks later that the new owner just sold it for $13,500 and he missed out on the extra $1,500. Logdog made $11,500 on the cue, but is mad that the new guy made $1,500. I told him years ago the same thing you just told him. He will end up leaving it to a family member and they will sell it for say $10,000 and be ecstatic about it.Logdog

You have done a great job of alienating your buyers, and your target market is dying off.Discovering the "true market price" has proven difficult which is why the information about the low prices for Gus Szamboti cues at the Billiard Expo was interesting.
