Hardtimes and Dave Hemmah

I played Hardtimes first sunday of the month $1000 added $20 entry event sunday.

I had a decent run but was eventually knocked out 5-6 by Dave Hemmah.
It has to be said that as far as top players go Hemmah is a class act.
After dismantling me he gave some advice. He is always a pleasure to play and seems liked by everyone. Not all top players especially at Hardtimes come across that way.
Tang Ho is another good guy there as well. Im not sure how he ended up but he played all day and even played some billiards as well. His kicking on both tables was very good. He always seems to being having fun playing pool.

I got there about 12:15 and got spot number 93. They filled the 96 limit with easy and had several on a waiting list. Im surprised a local or two dont get there early and buy a spot only to sell it later. :D

The regular good players were there except Ernesto and Oscar Domingues (sp?). I like watching Ernesto play so I was a bit disappointed he was not there.
Morro, Arturo, Hemmah, King Kong, Tang, Elias Valles, Sam Manole, Larry Bohn,Frank Da Barber, Butch B and a slew of other good players were there. Sorry if I left out anyone.
Good value tournament but way too long. Started at 1pm and I finished at 12:35am in 5-6th. I am always surprised that they rent out some of the tables in the tournament room during the tournament

Another event in the area this sunday 8-12 at Stix Billiards in Rancho Cucamonga. I believe its the same format with a $20 entry and $1000 added. However a 12pm start time

Hey Frank, we're in Frisco working like crazy. We would like to have gone, but can't dog the 9 working! :)

You had good run. Not easy to place that high in a field full of world beaters. Did Hemmah win? Well, nap time, worked from about 8 til almost 6am. I cant keep up with my dad's work pace. Its embarassing considering Im only 22 and he's 52. lol. oh well, good job once again and Dave is a hella of a guy.

One thing about that Dave Hemmah, he is definitely a trend-setter. I have seen several pro pool players on the East Coast, who shall remain nameless, immediately go out and get the same haircut after they saw Dave a few years ago on the East Coast. :D

I got there around 10:30p last night to watch a couple of the matches. I got to see Morro play King Kong and they both played great. Sometimes when I see players who rarely miss play each other, it's almost like randomness is the biggest factor (even though I know it's not, I'm just not good enough to know the very subtle things the great players are doing to make things less random). And watching King Kong's stroke makes me feel like I'm going to tip over...

Dave is an awesome guy. I have only met him once but when my wife was out in Long Beach she got a few lessons from him. He sure is a class act.

I am always surprised that they rent out some of the tables in the tournament room during the tournament

So am I, and I was one of them on Sunday! Couldn't stay long enough to play in the tourney...

But I've also been to Hollywood Billiards this trip, playing on the supertight tables Ernesto set up for the tourney they had there in January. Every table has 4-inch corner pockets, and the place is still filled! So much for the old roomowner's wisdom about having big pockets to bring in the bangers. My favorite room in LA, unless there's something going on at Hard Times.

Dave's a good guy and will be a great Dad (new poppa)!

I have not been to that 1st Sunday tournament at Hard Times in who knows how many years. I have no interest in being there till 3am (yes, if I go there, I intend to win). Get home at 4am then get up at 6:30am. No thanks.

I was wondering where you were at. Its tough. I wonder if they would be better having two each month. First sunday and third with both limited to 64. Maybe one with no A players or no Pros.

I go about once every 6 months at best. I do like the room and I had a decent time but long. If you have a good chance at winning it can be worth it but for me I know that I am donating and to spend a day playing the event even for $20 is a stretch.

Hollywood Billiards is a very nice place. They get people in there even with the tight tables. The ones upstairs aren't as tough though.

I think its the crowd. Most could care less want they played on. I have seen several Hollywood celebs and athletes in there and tons of models.

Really nice place except for lack of parking. I had to park donw the street once and left about 1am. I made it but its wasnt the safest walk.

I was hoping to see you and your dad play. I hear you have been hitting them well!!
Alex and Stix is having a tournament this sunday. Maybe you guys can make it then.

Not sure who won. I had to go home and do 3 hours of paperwork that had to be due by 7am. Left at about 1 and got home at about 2.
Dave was playing well so it would not surprise me if he did win it.

Next time you see Dave, tell him hi for me. Saw him a couple years ago on the east coast and had a nice visit with him (he was in the pro event at the Super Expo - maybe where JAM and Keith saw him). I always enjoyed playing and talking to him when I worked in California - he is a class act.

Dave Hemmah

Morro won, I think Dave got 6th. I do not remember the chart. I just got home working the same as you and your dad Oscar. To much work with no time to play. I will try to post the top 6 or more tomorrow night. I was hopping to watch at least one set of you playing the other night but the guy quit, he is bad action.

Jack, I will tell Dave you said hello. I see him almost every day at Hard Times.

Time for a few hours of sleep before I get back to work.

Dave must have finished 4th or better cuz he knocked me out at 7th/8th followed by Frank's outing at 5th/6th. The tournament does take a long time to finish but I love the competition :D

Hey now I know who this is. You shoot a very good game Chris.
If you ever see me around and want to shoot some just ask. I dont get to Hardtimes often but am traveling the SoCal area now with a new job and am trying to find some new places.
What are some of the places to play in your area? Any weekly tourneys?
Maybe I need to start a new thread and see if I can get some more information about SoCal places to play.

I just saw Tang. He said he finished second to Morro. It ended at 4AM. $540 for first and $350 for second. Ridiculous!

I say raise the entry to $40 and shut the field off at 64 players. The payouts will be bigger and it will end around Midnite.

first game of 9B i plaqyed Tang Hoa I ran out, i should have quit a winner it was the first time I beat a champion the first game, I didnt and i dont think i'm going to ba able to level the score he is ahead of me, Dave is a class act too.

I did beat Jay Helfert at banks-his best game and quit winneer, i have been milking this victory for months in the hopes he comes back to Vegas and beats me, he wouldnt like playing 9B the way I played last night for the first hour I played, and Jay is a better player than me, i just like to give him a hard time.

man its strange i was shankng so bad from my meds i couldnt rack the balls i had someone else do it for me, but wow did I play good on a Diamond table with tough pockets-i was playing way over my head, I put a 4 pack on a friend 2 BNR, one 4,9 billiard one 9 on the break, the billard was awesone, with this back problem i'm either running racks like nothing or litterly cant make 4 balls in a row. there is no middle ground in my pain or game right now.

that works out to minimum wage, I saw Morro take 4th in hollywood after all day and he got $100

Frank, thanks for the kind words. It might be tough to keep up with your game. :p As for local area events, I only play Hard Times tournaments for the most part. If you are into bar tables, there are 9-ball tournaments at Mayfair (3 bar tables in a bar) on Friday nights and 8-ball tournaments at Mr. Lucky's (3 Valley bar tables + 8 9-footers) in Torrance on Saturday night that usually attract 20 some odd players each. Perhaps others can add some other tournaments that are of note.;)
