Harris Cues Meltdown on Eddie Wheat Proportions

Hey folks, this could quickly turn into cuemaking's "Grassy Knoll". Does anyone know FOR SURE what arrangement Sly/Harris did or didn't have? Throwing out wild guesses on this is waaaay past counter-productive. This Harris dude sounds to have gone completely off-the-air and should be treated as such. Just ignore the guy.

Hard to Believe

I know it is hard to believe but there are still plenty of people that don't give two whoops and a holler about the internet. Could be a mistake as things can build up a head of steam, true or false, and damage their reputation. However, no comment should never be seen as an admission of guilt.

The FB post says he makes cues for Sly and Sly has not paid him for the work.

Don't buy his cues seeing as Harris made them and he has not gotten paid.

This reminds me of the industry I work in where brokers keep the money and never pay the subcontractors.

Just curious here; Sly has quite a few cues-in-progress pics on his FB page today. I have NO dog in this hunt but i do have a question: are all the spliced fore-arms made by Sly? RH? A combination of the two? If RH's shop got whacked in the storm how was he able to make products? Just a curious outsider here, nothing more.

Harris probably made a batch of template cues. Maybe a bunch of 4 pointed cues with veneers that's why he claims he hasn't been paid. So with the Harris batch...Sly can easily add a few things here and there and inscribe his name on the cues. Selling it as his own.

Wasn't Balabushka and company using blanks from others?

This is the 21st century so cue makers are using more than blanks. The 4 point veneers are the new blanks of today.

Your account is oddly specific.

What made you think it was a single batch? What made you think it was unfinished cues? What made you think it was limited to a single style?

Harris did say he made a bunch of cues for Sly. Cues as in plural. Not only plural but he said HALF of Sly's cue. Therefore, I just came to the conclusion that it was a batch.

It had to be unfinished unless Harris inscribed SLY on the butt and it was ready to be sold. Are you saying SLY can't finish the cues? Because Harris did mention no skills.

I believe it was a limited style because I'm giving SLY the benefit of doubt. Maybe he got bored pumping basic 4 pointers so he only went as far as asking Harris to make those. It would be bad if all those multiple fancy SLY cues were all made by Harris. Therefore making the "no skill" comment valid.

I have no dog in this fight just going off what Harris said.

It could be the other way around, he was sent blanks to inlay, logo, and finish.

Would anyone pay the same price for a Rembrandt that was painted by someone other than Rembrandt? I hope not.

In most industries that is called fraud or counterfeiting, if I'm not mistaken some people here are saying that in pool it's standard business practice. And before I'm accused of it, I'm not saying the same is true if a production cue moves it's production to Japan.

Personally speaking, I'd have to be an absolute fool to buy one of these subbed out cues for anything near the price of an original, if I buy it at all.

The thing about these 2 guys is you aren't gaining or losing value with either builder - they are equally average.

I think that perspective- fraud- is a cop out.
Many cuemakers use others to get their products out there.it doesn't come to light with the drama seen here,
I will give you that.

Call it as you wish...Does misrepresentation sound better?

Seriously, if the cues are of equal quality and value, then why not be honest and state who the true builder actually is? If they are of different quality and value, what then is the purpose of misrepresenting the maker other than trying to get a higher price for the lesser quality cue? Unless of course, Szamboti is building cues for a lower end builder, which I doubt, then the customer is being treated more than fairly and all is well in the universe.
Otherwise something smells.

Hey Jimmy, Gus built and sold blanks to GB and what we would consider lesser cue makers in his day.

Just coz one doesn't smell it, doesn't mean nobody farted...

You'd be surprised to find out who supplies what to whom.

My mom said my paint by number picture was just as nice as the original. I was crushed when nobody would buy it. I thought I was gonna live large in the second grade!
